I have a further in your paper.
W.W. Webb and Mrs. Symmes, I drove the ponies down to Mr. Moses F. Ham's on Thursday, June 6th. There we left the ladies to enjoy themselves, and in company with many neighbors and friends, proceeded to excavate the mound in Mr. Ham's pasture. I was in error in my last communication in reference to this earth work. It is situated on the point of a low bluff about 1/2 mile east and 3-16 mile north of Lick creek, and nearly 1 mile northwest of the mound on Mr. Well's farm. During the day some 25 to 30 persons came to see our work and help in the excavating. We had a very pleasant time and fine hospitality at Mr. Ham's. The results were varied and unexpected. Mr. Ham's mound is 30 feet in diameter and originally was from 5 to 8 feet in height. The size and construction was much like Mr. Well's, except that there were fewer rocks. We begun a trench in Mr. H's mound, on the western side, 4 feet wide and sown to the natural level. No bones were found whatever. But Mr. Joseph Farlow found a small flint hoe and arrow point, which seemed to have been dropped in during the erection of the work. When we reached the center, always the point of interest in mounds, we discovered a large deposit of ashes mixed with small bits of charcoal and fine sand. It lay in a shallow trench 4 feet long: and was over 2 feet in depth and width. We computed the bulk at a cubic yard of hardly packed ashes. This seemed to have been covered over with a coat of mud made of dark soil, which was very tough. We all felt that we had reached the objective point of the work. Feeling that it was safe to assume that they are human ashes we set about calculating how many bodies it would require, average size, to make that bulk of ashes. A cubic yard contains 46,656 cubic inches. Now how many cubic inches of solid ashes will one human body make, including the ashes of the wood required to burn it, noting that in burning a large number a smaller proportion of wood will be needed. The greater part thought that a cube of 2 inches, or 8 cubic inches, was large enough. This would give over 5,000 persons. But it is likely that a human body would make a larger amount than 8 cubic inches. One pint of the ashes weighs 1 1/4 lbs. and there are nearly 29 cubic inches in a pint. Now If we allow a cube of 4 inches (64 cubic inches) for each body, it will, giving a little over 2 lbs of solid ashes for each, indicate the cremation of 729 men; a very large number, and giving a high degree of interest to this "Crematory Mound." If these estimates ere incorrect will someone please correct them? In regard to its use we are left to conjecture. The tradition, as said before, is that these mounds were made after a battle between two tribes, and the dead of the one were buried in one, and of the other in the other. If so, one tribe must have lost the larger number and been crematists. Some hence suggest that the chiefs were buried in Mr. Well's mound and the common Indians were burned and their ashes buried in Mr. Ham's. Still it is probable that they were made by different nations and hundreds of years apart. Carefully saving some of the ashes we adjourned to dinner. After dinner Mr. Ham and myself went over to Mr. James Campbell's farm, and with him, dug a pit 4 feet wide to the bottom and in the center of a small mound on his farm, but made no discoveries. I think it is an unfinished mound that had not received the deposit for which it was intended. It stands half mile due west and on the other side of the creek from Mr. Ham's mound. At my request we repaired to Mr. Well's mound to test theory I had formed of the deposits in it, and after heard digging verified it in all but one point. T e f t the o the t

Bloomikgton, June 10, 1S73. Monroe county, which has been under tha control f the Xlepublirao party for tha last tea cr fifteen years, for th most par-, can b't set down es reliably Democratic this year. There is v.'.cz-j lifo in the Democratic party here this year than for a decade pt and a corresponding depression among the followers of John Sherman. As tho Hepublieana have only succeeded in carrying this county by small majorities, caused by a few - Democrats failing to do their duty, a vote for a Democratic Senator and a just apportionment of the State, in the next Legislature, can k relied upon from old Monroe, certain. The result of the Democratic: nominating convention on Saturday was a ticket that Republicans admit to be the strongest the party hits brought out for years sines Flia3 Abel, Milton UcPliet ridge, and men of that class mod to carry the county by four hundred majority. The ticket is as follows; Representative, R. W. Xlier; Auditor, R. A. Futk; Treasurer, George Find ley; CleriX, Lem. Fields; Sheriff, Peter Mathews; Recorder, Robert Oil 1raore. Gen. Hanson started tha tick. el on its road to victory in a rousing speech, End our Democratic goose hangs high. The convention itself was large and enthusiastic and was in full sympathy with its able chairman, IX r. John W. Buskirk, to whom tho eQciency and good order of the convention was largely due.
