is Christmas eve the appointed time to
join the rebel ranks but, Tyrrell, you
shall sup on prison fare to-morrow, and,
in place of Marian's arms around your
neck, a halter shall be your portion.
With clenched teeth and dart ami
gloomy brow, Dalzell strode fiercely in
the direction of Trenton.
Two hours afterward, accompanied by
a posse of Hessians, he entered the cot
tage cf Mrs. Tyrrell and arrested her
son as a traitor and a rebel. Walters
cousin, William, escaped, but the only
son of the poor widow was conveyed to
prison to await his execution on the mor
row. He was not allowed the benefit of
a trial, for the Hessians were taught by the British to believe that the Americans would give no quarter aod were sworn
to murder all foreigners that might tall
into their hands; and, acting on this principle, summarily disposed of all rebels whom they captured. Young
Dalzell was Walter's accuser and betray
er, and on his information his former
friend and comrade was sentenced to be
shot at daylight.
On a couch of straw in his prison cell, without a ray of light to shine upon him save the cold moonbeams that glittered through the iron bars, the young man sat, thinking of the many events of the night and the dreadful fate that awaited him in the morning the cup of bliss, so suddenly dashed from his lips, ere he had scarce tasted it; the bright hopes he so lately entertained dashed to pieces;

soon to become a blank to him, and he to

Marian's suspicions of Dalzell flashed
upon him, anil in a moment of frenzy he cursed the .treachery cf his perfidious friend. The misery of his lonely mother and her sorrow at his loss for a while
