En. I.lv, s We have always teen opiHl to local prejudices and personal animwnitiet, at is ppartnt from articlra publiihfl In the OrlranH Journal over our signature. Atul rertairdy tLe editor at tle Oi jeani Journal cannot exrt ills snddn outburst of un-fi-u tided calumny f gainwt the editor of the Paoli Weekly News to ik ret our approbation. The editor of the News has fought the battles of Dr rrtcTiuy before the Orleans Journal had an si?tence. Lie has always' been ready, willing- and efficient in defending our rights, both pufclie and private, for which he is Justly entitled to our gratitude and support. The editor of the Orleans Journal i3 certainly actuated by very selfish motives in this matter. 11a wants the tounty printing, and In order to oMain it h resorts to this tirade of scandalans abu.ce against Mr. Eu-kirk. We think this conclusion Is an unavoidable inference from facts contained in the Journal, and therefore we are Paved the necf.-sity cf entering Into an. argument of the question. It is a well known fact that an independent paper, as a general rule, Is a disturbing element in a community, and deleterious to the interest of the party to which It pretends to belong. This truth is fully verified by the result of the action of the Orleans Journal in the matter above - referred to. And whenever we are fully convinced that the Orleans Journal is doing that which it knows to b Injurious to our public interest we should cease to patronize it. "Whatever brawls disturb the street there should be peace at home." "Surrounding circumstances fi rm the character of man, at least a great many of our leading citizens believe they do, and disposition is a creature of education. Our people do not wish their children surrounded by those manuscripts of personal strife. We want no such examples in our household, whether it be called News or Journal. Bek Davis.
Orleans, April 2, 187. Ed. News Two years ago when Mr. Oatnuel A. Davis made the race for Treasurer he was comparatively unknown to th people of Orange county. That fact, coupled with th other fact that our opponents massed their entire forces against him, caused his defeat. II r. Davis accepted his defeat like a man and went back to his farm, where he remained until he was called by appointment to succeed Mr. Shivety, our late Sheriff. The' people now know him and know that Orange county has no belter man than Samuel A. Davis. With the kindest of feelings towards his competitors, all of whom are good men and tried Democrats, I think the Democracy of Orang county owe the nomination to Mr. Davis. A Democrat. Ed. News My name is being used in different parts of the county as a candidate for Joint Representative fr the counties of Orange and Crawfrd, and I have been asked by a great many persons In regard to it. By your permission, I will say through your' paper to all inquiries, what I have often said. I would like very much to go to the Legbl lture, and iftho Democracy of Orange is of the same notion, I will go, bui can not electioneer for the nomination, that bting contrary to. my view. French Lick, April 1, 1ST?. Ed. News As tha time 'firosr convention draws nih candidates and their friends are rnure actiye and anxious. I have rfrainel until now from expressing my preference for any of the gentlemen whose names are before the people. It now more than ever behooves the Demtcracy to choose as their standard bearers nona but the very best of men, and while I am willing to-concede-that' nil of the gentlemen aspiring to tha office of Sheriff are good men and true, I favor the nomination of Samuel A. Davis, our present Sheriff. I have known Mr. Davis from childhood and in qualification and all that it takes to make a good man and citizen hj is the peer of any man in Orange county. The better you know him the better you will like hliu. Jackson. Ed. News The school at No. 14, this township, which has been under th supervision of John W. Cu Winger, closed Saturday,- March 23. Tha' day dawned .bright "and beautiful. At an early hour tha visitors began to arrive, and by 11 o'clock tiie htiuse was filled to overflowing. Thsrecitttions were a!! splendid, shovring to every listener that the teacher was thorough and the pupils industrious. At 12 o'clock the desks wera eonverted into tables and wera loaded with ham, chicken, pies, preserves, j ilies, and in fact everything which is required to constitute a good dinner, to which the large crowd present did ample justice. The afternoon exercises consisted principally of lectures by the fifth grade, the third and fourth grades having become disorganized two oi three days before. There was one very interesting recitation by the second grade. We cannot pass on without giving the members of the fifth grade special notice. It was composed of Misses Kittie Hollowell, Sallie Wolf, Matlie Noblitt, Sallie Lagle and Messrs. James E. Hollowell and David Jones. In physiology each member of the class seleetHl their own subject, and from diagrams, gave quite interesting and instructive lectures. In geography, as in physiology, each one selected some country, and delivered a fine lecture thereon. The recitations of this grade in the other branches werij good. The members all acquitted themselves nobly, but we think Miss Sallie Wolfe and Miss Kittie Hollowell excelled. At night wo had two short but god lectures, one from W. J. Throop, the other from Henry Mavity. The patrons of this district ought to be very thanktul to Mr. Throop for employing such a worthy teacher. Mr. Sullinger came among us a stranger to almost every one, but by his good conduct as a citizen and his untiring efforts as i teacher, has won for him the icspeet and admiration ot every good citizen. We regret very much to lose Mr. Sullinger, but hope that we my have the pleasure f meeting him again in the same capacity. A Visitor. AtX. Creeli Items.
