On the followir morning he va stirpri.setl to fifrl Use stone beneath the ashes of hi f.re covered with silver. The -ht'i'hertl lot no time in inf:;rmin; master of this dneovi ry and the result was that a very rich vein of silver ore, was found, ;u d pre j anitiooH made at once for working it. ui this nii;e, whkh is called the Discovery," silver is still obtained. From the village of Pa.eo, about six miles distant, arrived several rich mine-owners, large works h ere erected, and at length a city vs founded, which now cental; a population of nearly "twenty thousand. Indians ere employed in working these mines, and some of them sirs very cunning in concealing pieces of silver ore on their person. Although narrowly watched by bvc rscerers, they sometimes contrive to carry off large pieces. A very valuable mass was thus taken by a minsr, who, pretending illness, fastened it on his back, and covering himself in his cloak obtained permission to quit the mine. What is called polvorilla, a dark, powdery kind of ore, very full of silver, used to bo abstracted from the mines by the following trick: The workmen would strip off their clothes, and having moistened the whole of their bodies with water, they would roll themselves in the polvorilla, which stuck to their &kins. On their return home they would wash off the silverdust, and then sell it. This trick was, however, at length foundout, and a stop put to it, as the laborers, before leaving the mine, were required to strip in order to be searched. i Three half-grown boys, near Cincinnati, pouved gasoline on the leg of a little fellow five years old, and then set fire to it right at the toes. The flesh was burnt off, leaving the bone baie and partially charred. The freak seems to have keen the working ol a devlish spirit of cruelty, as while the child was burning they threw stones at him, bruising the quivering flesh. For three days he laid iu a burning fever, and the physicians feared he would die, but thanks to a strong constitution and good nursing, he is now recovering. The boys have not been punished in any manner. Here is a Turkish fable: Abdullah went to the residence of jS'asertddln to borrow his mule. Nastreddin, who was a ready lender said the innle was not at home. At that moment the mule brayed loud enough to wake the echoes. "What did you say Nasercddin, that your mule was not at home but I hear him." ''Go thy way, false Abdullah," said his neighbor, "you are not a true friend; for you believe the mule and refuse to take my word." Phliidelphia Pre: "Pack me up one or two nice books to read," said Mrs. Jones to her husband jut before departing on a journey to the country. Jones did so, and the disgust which Mrs. Jones fAt can not be described when she took out from the satchel to read on thoears: "Barnes' Notes on Matthew," 'Cicero's TuscuUm Disputations," a copy of Livy," without notes', and a cook book.
