' ;. fo'To-.vinsr i- a pper from b. i;.;.eiy, I'T-si-it-i.r of ih" Inll . a Sunday S.-hooi Union, to t'ee Orange County Sunday School Convention: Jr. J''evi'-Tftft and nic-vlas af the I desire thrown this inediiuri to extend to yu'a my hearty thanks fur your very kind and cordial invitation to i:e with you at your Convention. I lael hoped to be with you, but the sickness -of my partner in business prevented me from leaving home, and while I am thns denied the p'ea-are of being In your midst in person,- I can assure you that my heart- is with you ami my prayer will" be that you may have a profitable and pleasant meeting and your very heart burn within you as you talk one with another of the love Which the master has for you and all who serve him. I particularly desired to be with you. for several reasons. 1. I wanted to meet the Sunday School workers of my native county in Convention to hear what has been done for the cause in Orange county and what is to be elouo for the coming year. . 2. Because I am deeply Interested in the work 'and for the s'ueeess of tho work in each and -everv county in the State.
And lastly that I might ..yssk you to renew your energies, and adopt such plans as will result in bringing every child, every young man anel olel man, young woman and old woman in Orange county into the Sunday School. Tins is possible. We pray for great' things. We must expect great results. A11 things are " possible' 1 v-ith. God.' PSacee! at the head of dhe Sunday School work in Indiana, I want to ask that you remember me in your prayer while m Convention that I may be strengthened for the work and be the means in the master's hands of advancing th interest of the cause during the coming year. Anel now ltt me call your attention briefly to the present condi tion of the work in the State. . Indiana takes her place as the 3d State in the Union as having com plete county organizations. Pre senting to-day an unbroken front, every, county m the State having a county, organization and manifest ing, a good degree, of interest. We have in the State 4,0S0 Sunday Schools, having 40,002 dfficers and teachers and 320,832 scholars : enrolled a total of nearly 400,000 persons engaged in our Sunday Schools and Sunday School work. Ibis is ' certainly' an imposing army anel the work that has been done lor the master during the past year, we hope has been blessed of God, More than 5,000 persons have been received into our church from the Sunday School during the year. "Surely God' has done wenelrous tilings for Indiana. We do not lack Sunday school literature, books and papers are abundant, gooei ' ones too. The greatest minds of our ago are engaged in the interests of -the Sunday Stdvool cause, ivei-y denomination is in the publishing fielel. The .department ef song seems" complete, there is no music in the land like that of - the Sunday School. Our appliances for t)iir work are almost , endless, black boards, crayons, card, mottoes, lesson sheets, notes and maps. WTe have conventions and institutes, Sunday School concerts and festivalswork of many different kinds, and our, schools are so attractive anel entertaining that we someiimes wonuer is tnere is not clan ger of our worshiping them instead el making them a means to a glo rious end. With alb this display of Lgures and lacts our work is yet in its infancy. We are just getting ready for work. -'Nearly ' S00,000 chuuren nn our State, my dear hrethern, whose names are not. -to be found -on our Sunday School rolls a large portion of this number, we liiay fairly" presume, without any bible instruction or chrisnun miiueuce. iiew many are there in- your county, town or township in this condition? "Be thou diligent to know the state of thy -Hecks and look well to thy herds." Coning together as you have elone on this occasion, tends largely to awaken an interest in the Sunday - School cause , and I trust with your county organization perfected in all its details, Sunday S;-b0.s may be estaolislied in portions of the county where none exist..: I trust the spirit and power of . your Convention will have an influence which v. ill be felt by all parents' ami '"all other persons who have the iuterests of the;? a. t and of- -kty rt m art. .a t.ry true cith'-'O. a- v. . it r,. t v-ry e.rio-t chri-li !"t h :s ao ia:,r; t it" I i ; YV 1 ! : - -i!
