A Saturdays' dispatch to the Enquirer from Washington says: fc-ubscriptions to the four per cent, loan have exceeded all expectations from every quarter. August. Belmont's dispatch last night stated that nearly six million had been sold yesterday in Ktw York City, which made the totals loot up at the commencement of business this morning to 81,100,100. Up to two o'clock today a sale of 16,000,000 more was promised. .The books will remain open for popular subscriptions until Monday at three o'clock, and estimates received here by telegraph as to the total amount that will be subscribed reach as high as ?uO,Oo0,OO0. and none are less than $10,000,000. Before Secretary Sherman left hero he was enthusiastic in the hope that $20,000,000 would be subscribed. The fact of the large subscriptions goes to show that the American people have always been ready to take National loans if they are given the opportunity, without hawking the bonds in Europe, and paying royal commissions to a Syndicato to place them. , Hay floes In $2."S,OGO YTorlli He liaises Sinner During Hit "Electoral Com; I. New York Sun.' Toledo, July M. During the discussion of the charge that Hayes used money for election purposes last year, the fact leaked out here that while the electoral count was going on Hayes borrowed $5,000 of one cf his friends at Columbus, and gave as security a mortgage upon real estate which he owns in this county. This fat-t has been known by a limited few of his friends here, who endeavored to keep it a secret; but it somehow got out, and is exciting a good deal of discussion. I have searched the records of Lucas county, and there find a mortgage granted by Ttutherford B. Hayts to Win. A. Piatt, of Franklin county, certified to by Jv I r. (7. Hit' 1 II, i . A dispatch from Kars July 8th, says; Yesterday Mukhtar Pasha, with 18 held and six mountain guns, oOO regu lars and 3,500 ii regular cavalry and GO battalions of infantry, ad vanced from Kirkbunar to Wahirankale, eight miles south of Kars, and this morning Mukhtar Pasha rode in, leaving his forces intrenched at Wahirankale. Sir Arnold Ken; ball, tho British military attache, also came in and went over the b ittcrie? on the Karidagh rebout, tho easternmost position where the bomhardment has been the heaviest. Yesterday thero was very heayy firing on both cities. The llussian hea.dqr.ai ters are at Zain, eight miles to the northeast, but their batteries are advanced to within 4,000 yards to cast. The Turkish loss during tho siege has been trifling; that of the Russians is unknown. Their fire was most accurate, and for some days has been overwhelming, over 000 shells from 15 and 18 inch Certimire guns were thrown into the place in one day, Mukhtar Pasha proposes to intrench himself and revietual Kara for the winter. At present it is well supplied with stores and ammunition, and prices are cheaper than in Erzeroum. The appearance of the troops are excellent, and their health good. They are most enthusiastic. The officers seem well educated. The place ia almost impregnable. 3Iatcrs on tlie Itlexlcan I or der. New Orleans, July 13. The News' Brownsville special says that General Canalcs and General Devin have had a conference, and had no diiilculty in coming to an agreement in relation to the sup pressing of raids. They were of the opinion that they could render the passage of troops from one side to the other unnecessary by dis charging their respective duties. Company G. first cavalry, 63 men, commanded by Captain Bernard and Lieutenants Ward and Petcher arrived hero Saturday from JWennomucca. Battery B is now in the mountains, commanded by Captain Ilosbrook and Lieutenants Ennis, Chaplin, Hammond and Wilson, and 19 enlisted men 'are expected to arrive soon. These are to b-a followed by three other companies ofinfantry. This will give a force under Colonel Green of six companies .of cavalry and five of infantry. Since his arrival here Colonel Green has been unremitting in making preparations and hastening troops forward. Had orders been issued in time this force would have been in the neighborhood of Salmon river when Joseph and his band crossed to the south side. Joseph, when on this side of the Salmon river, feared an advance of Col. Green's column, which he knew to be advancing from the south, and this in all probability saved Werzer and Payett valleys from being raided. From present appearance the In dians in southern Idaho are now quiet, and adverse to going upon the warpath. .,. ?iew .Prospect Itcias. Ed. News: I have been a reader of the News ever since it has been a paper, and have never seen any thing from this place, sol thought perhaps you might publish a few lines from here. New Prospect is located on the Vineennes and New Albany grade road, nine miles west of Paoli and half way between crossing No. 1 and No. 2 on Lost river, and near the noted Saratogas of the West, French Lick and West Baden Springs. Although the name of our village would imply that it is new, yet it is little but old. The farmers of this valley have been very busy for some time harvestingtheir grain, which, by tho way, ".was good, llay making is the order of the day now, and judging by the number of grangers out Saturday they have their hay in gDod shape. The "grangers met at their hall, in this place, Saturday, and judging from the number cf horses hitched around the hail, they are not all dead yet. . Church, grange and ten-pin rolling was ' the order of things Saturday.Tho Christian order held a meating Sunday at 11 a. m. at their church iii Prospect. Visitors are getting pretty thick at tho Springs. A great deal of lumber is being hauled through this place to Or leans from Tread way and "Wagner's mill, southwest of here. . On there way diome from Fench Lick on the 4th some young bloods got into a fray which resulted badly. Two Foxes, a Too ten, one Harmon, and Bailey got into a fight, and, from the best information I can get, a young man by tho name of Ilockins went to part them and was attacked by some of the parties and was badly used up with a kuffe. lie was cut in six or seven places, his head, face, back, breast and side, but we learn he is getting wed'. Allow me to thank you for so readily granting ray request to compound sample dishes for me during tho summer. I shall endeavor to exchange with yoa, stirring in such ingredients as shall bo at fiand, though I shrink from any comparison of flavor with flavor as you suggest. But I must take issue with you upon two or three point; you , have brought forward. It is' ail very well, perhaps to appear to st a low estimate upon your own productions, io soundly berate flatterers in general, and recommend a certain etiquette of paying compliments; ail well enough to put on that meekness and playfulness of demeanor that the cat assumes for a time before she pounces upon and demolishes her prey; but how jewel-like would be adiRle consistency! Like any other good cook, it is natural for you. to snare your commendations of your own dishes lost there might be found a hair in tiie butter; but why recommend abstinence from flattery while you deluge us with a torrent of it? If you must flatter, please do not effuse upon me, but flatter some poor, lonesome girl, especially if sho is handsome and has nobody to take care of her money. And as to your humbleness, I fear it would be well to approach you as one would "a lurking cato'raountain" where the foliage is so luxuriant, flowers so abundant, and all surrounding objects so fascinating as to bo likely to distract attention from the danger they conceal. But let us proceed to business. Fince it is my privilege to suggest a subject for your next dissertation, please let us hear fVom you upon any incident, however trivial and insignificant, that "may occur in your vicinity during this week, and oblige Your pupil, Caul.
