The irur.ctgen of the Cincinnati, Rockport and Mitchell rail road are contemplating- changing their road to a narrow gauge, and Instead cf seeking an outlet to Cincinnati by the route heretofore proposed, now. pro pos3, to run from Jasper, by way of French Lick springs, through Paoli to Brownstown, Jackson county, and there connect with the Bedford, Brownstown and Madison Narrow Gauge, which is already a fixed fact, thus giving them a -direct practicable, easy and paying route to Cincinnati. As our readers also know the road, now known as the Cincinnati, Rockport and Mitchell road, is already built and running trains, and doing a -good business from Itoykport to near Jasper, in our neighboiing county of Dubois, and with a fixed fact, in the way cf a partially 'built .. and equipped read at 'each.. teristfni of the", proposed consolidation, there are good grounds for believing that at last ire hare a chance for a kail road. We had a conversation with a leading, active and influential oScial of the TJ. B. & M. road lst week and were assured by him, that if the citizens residing along the line through this part of the country, would give them the proper encouragement. the consolidation of the two companies would be affected, and the road- would surely come. They ask nothing in the way of taxes, subscriptions or donations until the road is fully built, equipped and cars running through our county, only asking that we'll pledge them a reasonable help to be paid when the road is built, equipped and cars running through our county. The funds necessary to make a survey of the route are already guaranteed and that will cost us nothing. Our citizens have "hanked" high on the Lake Eiie road, but at I-.st we are forced to believe that we bet on the "bobtail boss" and have lost the race. We need such a road as the one proposed. It would develop the agricultural, mineral and other resources of our county, that are now undeveloped and comparatively worthless. Let's try and et it.' If we don't get it, it costs us nothing. If we do get it, it will add an thousand fold, over cost price to old ' Orange. In another column will be found a communication from a leading citizen of Saltilloville on this subject. We would suggeat that a meeting of our citizens be held at the court house at-an early date to take action in the matter. When shall it be. ..-'-'- - '- - ' - . . To Our Putrcns. ' " 'We have .refrained: for,. .a long time from thinning those who are indebted to us. It is an extremely unpleasant thiurr to m to be compelled to dun our many friends and patrons, but in order to meet our liabilities and keep up the expenses of our ofjee, and families, we must insist on payment of what Is due us. .The amounts due from each are small, but taken together they amount to hundreds of dollars to us. We are compelled to make this notice general, it applies to all alike from necessity, and .we trust that it will have the effect to cause a general response. The sixth, criticism. The seventh, reading the programme for the next institute. Adjourned to meet the third Saturday in December. ; S. E. Millkr, Trustee. Denton Burton, Sec'y. Paom, Ind. Nov. 23, 1876, Editor News I noticed an article in your last issue on the propriety of building a turnpike from Paoli to Orleans. There is no enterprise within the ability of our people that would so much facilitate general business a3 the construction of such a road to the farmer, mechanic or other business man its importance cannot be over estimated. To Orleans it would take trade of nil kinds, and at all times of the year, and to Paoli it would afford an easy passage to the railroad and - market at all times of the year. Let us then do as other counties, that are blessed with enterprises and improvements, all put our shoulders to the wheel and push. Let us have no drones in the hive; do not be afraid that your neighbor will de rive more benfi t from it than you will, but all as one man come to the rescue and the J road can be built. Let all that can, take a contract anl take his pay in stock the investment will pay. I will take one mile. Take your hands and teams and put them to work, the road is needed, its within our reach therefore let us act at once Let a meeting he called of our citizens and consult the law and public feeling and put the ball i'i motion. . Jno. C. Albert, Saltilloville. Now that the managers of the Cincinnati and Rockport railroad are figuring on changing their track to the Narrow Gauge and continuing it via Paoli to lirownstown to counect at that place with the Bedford, Brownstown atid Madison railroad, we ak that Saltillo have a "fair count" when the survey is made, for wo are on a direct line between Paoli and Brownstown and this is the shortest and cheapest route. We made no fight for the Lake Erie and Evansville road bat we do want a Narrow Gauge road to Cincinnati via Madison. Very Tlep'y. WM. A. 'ELLIOTT.
