The committee appointed on Stock Subscriptions reported, that there was raised for the proposed road, the sum of 45,000 in Seal Estate and Cash Sub scriptions. ' Hie report was received with great applause. ' The meeting w a. -fx hen addreised in an eloquent and stirring mai.ner, congratulating the citizens of Monticello and White county upon their . success, and earnestly exporting the meeting to united effort for the purpose of raising the small balance of f 5,000, to be raised end of securing the road to Monticello. . The following resolution was then in troduced by Mr. Sill: . - "Resolved, That twenty-five of our citizens, to be named by the Chair, enter into the guarantee required by Pres. Island- aa .prisoners bss 'written a' letter honne, in -'winch" ha says: - . . - - - We were left under a guard st the hut, until the return, of our captors, from the bljio about two hours. A eonsiitution was then held on the outside of the building respecting the manner in which we were to be disposed cf. ' It was evident from thetr' conversation that' their origiual intention had been to murder us; and indeed, one plan had been to. dig a hole in the sand large enough to held twenty-five bodies and to bury us. all together; hut thanks to-an all-wise and overruuj;j i'roviacnce, our lives were sparce. After about an hour spent in the most horrible - uncertainly, we were some what relieved by the arrival of" the Governor, who called aside the principal per --on of.the gangt and had .a short conversation with him. After this our bands were cut. end we were set at liberty on a desert Island. The Governor, Don Martin, and his man servant was left with us, and were the on persons besides ourselves on the island. The robbers left us about fifteen pounds of bread, and one gallon of molasses; thej' took from the Governor the greater part of his clothing and furniture. ; .- . : , - . We were kindly received by the .Governor at his house, and rested there while on the island. Here our food consisted almost entirely of meat, and fre quently we had nothing bjit a piece .of beef roasted on the coals. W e were ob liged to hunl the wild cattle for cur food, and as we could only take them at night. and had no firearms, the pursuit was very difficult and sometimes dangerous. We were nearly destitute of clothing. too, being only provided with one suit of working dress. . After a'bouttwenty-three days, passed in the rrjost agonizing suspense, a sail was discovered approaching the island. It proved to be the .ship Corktree," Capt. Malory, which took them on board ana carried thqrn ,to Tombez, where they were received on .the United States ship Portsmouth and conveyed to Guayeq ill, where .lhey found the George Ilowland at anchor, nearly dismantled, a large quantity of goods and provisions naving been stolen, end" sixteen of her crew missing;. .The Legislature, - TJiis body terminated its labors on Monday .morning, having been in session .one hundred and sixty days. It has been by far the most important session ever hold in the State. So many radical changes -were required under the new constitution, mat greater despatch in the business of legislation was utterly impracticable. -s the legislature was .responsible for the enacting of laws 'to render the code consistent with the - requisitions of the constiuuion, they resolved, as we think very properly, to revise the entire statutes' themselves. They have done an almost incrLdiuLIs ar.iour.t of lal-or, .nti the resuUvve have no doubtwiil be acode creditable to themselves and to the Slate.
