He eary emigrated to Vermont. On receiving the news of the battle of Lexington, he enlisted all his energies on the side of his country. Ilia first exploit was the capture of Ticondeioga, May ICth, 1775. fhe expedition egainst this post was ex l peJiPgly hold iti its design and success ul in its execution. At the head of only eighty-three men he entered the fort at night, took the sentry prisoner, and with a drawn sword made his way into the insrtments of the commanding ofiicer, demanded the surrender of the fort. I'y wlipt authority do you demand it? xelain:ed Cspt. Bv La Place, starting Voni his slumbers. 'In "die name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress," thunder o.d Allen. This was too high authority to be re sisted and the lort was instantly surren' dered with all its munitions of war. Col. Allen was taken prisoner in en ex pedition against the Canadas, while at tempting to capture Montreal, in connec tioa with Col. Brown, lie was loaded with chains and sent to England, where he was imprisoned a short time, end at length taken back to his ceut.try snd ex changed for Col. Quickly raising his hands to his mouth, he apparently snapped asunder the pins and bolts with bis teeth, and hurling his fetters and hand-cuSs overboard he seized the astonished captain by the collar, and threw him headlong upon the deck, then turning to the anvighted crew, bs exclaimed in a voice of thunder: "If I am insulted again during this voyge' I'll sink the ship and swim ashore." This exploit so terrified the captain and crew that Allen was allowed to do pretty much m he pleased tho remainder of the passage. ' Infamous Outrage. The announcement thatllphralm Littlefield is about to exhibit a couple of wax figures in New York dressed up to repre sent Dr. Parkman and Prof. Webster, together with a plan ol the Boston Medical College, is one of those indecent outrages on the public lor which no common law nor ordinance can possibly provide. The following remarks from the Sunday Despatch are lull cf sound sense and right feeling: ' , "Our anxiety for the reputation of cur city, and the lair fame of its inhabitants was materially calmed when we discover ed that the whole audience consisted oJ some dozen or fifteen dead heads, each and every one cf whom, notw ithstanding their long familiarity with scenes of shame lessness, actully seemed mortified at the position in which they had so unwittingly placed themselves; and aa fast as an oppor tunity offered some one or mors of them eagerly seized ittomake themselves scarce so that long before Littlefield's prosy and driveling harangue was to have closed, he was left with no one but the ugly, Hull looking man who owns the traps, far his audience. The wax representatvs of Webster and Parkmanj both of whom are clad in suits cf shabby, ill-fitting, seeond-hsnd Chatham street looking garments, are without exception the vilest caricatures on humanity and the most atrocious libels on art which have ever come under o'.!r observation. BEAUTIES OF II13TOUY.
One cf the worst kings that ever r&igr.ed in England was King John, the brother cf King Kichard. lie was cowardly and silly, aad like most silly cowards, hs was cruel, lie robbed and murdered, and broke his promises. II a had tried to deprive his brother Etchari cf his kingdom; and he had plotted with the Emperor of Germany and tha King of France to detain King Ulchartl in priicn utitil deaiU. ' And ahhough his brcihcr had forgiven him for his treachery,, bad made peace him, and given him great estates, yet he continued to plot against Richard and his friends; his friends held out their castles against the King when he returned to England. . John him sell fled to France; but after a lime returned, and making submission to his broths r, was forgiven; Hichard saying to him, "Brother, I wish thou couldst as easily forg'it thy habit of rebelling against me, as I shall forget thy injuries towards me." CENIHOSITY Pafirius Caebo, the Roman Consul, being impeached as an accomplice ia the assassination of the second Af.icar.us, and having affronted one of his servants, he stole the box in which his master kept all hi3 papers, and carried it to Licinius Crassus, who was employed to prosecute the indictment. Crassus had conceived an implacable hatred to Fapirius, and these papers would have furnished him with ample mailer to gratify it; but the generous Roman had such an abhorrance of the treachery, that he sent back the slave in chains, and the box unopened, saying, "that he had rather let an ene my and a criminal escape unpunished, than destroy him by base and dishonor able means." COXSCIOXE. No man ever evaded Uia own conscience, but f.rst or last it was revenged upon him.
