On the trial she read a document to the iurv in French. accounting for the mann-r in which the became possessed of the note, and staling it was "a token f affection" from her old bachelor friend, Michoud. If this document hinted at an immoral consideration fur the note, the testimony of the sister of the prisoner, if it were believed, left but litlle room for doubt. O Men when they desire to rule their fellows in an easy way, do so by means of incorporations. We never knew an incorporated company that I did not extend its powers and influences far beyond the intentions of its creators, and that did t not Dlav the sycophant when it was weak, or the : tvrant when it was strong. Soulier and reckless, armed with peculiar authority , and supported by legal fictions, it corrupts its own circle first, and then the community thatsurrounds it. Lik the leprosy, it spreads from the heart to the extremeties of the body, and finally dies a blotch, and is buried in polution. Associations without the power of the nation at their command are beneficial, and seldom injure their members or their neighbors; they are too weak to defy public opinion, and too poor to purchase it. They therefore accommodate themselves to the wants of the people, and thrive the best when they most assimilate to them.
