California Democratic Rfelking the Administration. Nothing among the news we published on yesterday from
California, says the Ohio Statesman, wasu graUfying to us as the announcement ol the election of Col. Geakt, Alcalde of San Francisco. ) Col. Geary, for his chivalric services in the Mexican war, as well as his hih qualification, j and virtues as a mac, was appoiniea vy .ur. rom ; Postmaster at San Francisco, California. But no j sooner did the tory sympathisers of fore'gu mon- j archs come into power, under the false professions of Gen. Taylor, than Col. Geary was hunted out as a victim of persecution and proscription, and made to "bite the dust," and give way to an instrumeatof the Ewiugs, Collamers fc Co. But the people of California knew his worth, and have rebuked the Administration by electing him, almost unanimously, Alcalde of San Fraucisco. Our readers recollect a letter in our paper some time since, from Col. Geary, dated at Sau Francisco, and furnished us by his brother, who resides in Ohio. The Pennsylvania:, speaking of the elections ia California, says : "Tiie general election for members of the convention to form a constitution, preparatory to the admission of California into the Union as a State, and for officers of the intermediary Government, was held on the 1st of August, in accordance with the proclamation of Gen. Riley. We have, up to this writing, received few of the returns of the election. Our letters, however, all concur in the fact, that California is essentia ly and orti whelmifucly Democratic. One of our correspondents asserts that seven-eighths of the people are Democrats another sa j t : ' The politics of California isaeeidedly Democratic, as j ou will perceive from the returns ol the men elected." A well known Democrat ol Philadelphia, siys: "Tho Administration, notwithstanding ail the efforts to render California a Whig Slate, has aire .dy been condemned by the people of this blooming territory."' Of the election of Col. Geary, who was from the Ke stone State, the tame paper remarks : ' One of the results of the election at the city of San Francisco th" reader will rind the figures in another column was the choice of Col. John W. Geary, late of ths 1st Pennsylvania Regiment in Mi Xico, as First Alcalde, an officer combining the important duties of Mayor ol the city, and Judge ol the Court ol Common Pleas There wereseVen tickets in the field, but the name of Col. Geary was upon each. Every other candidate had an opponent, but he got every vote thrown. The cause of this extraordinary mark of lavor, shown lo one wiio had umy been tour mouths in the territory, was not so much his talents, which are undoubted, his personal character, his courteous address, or his bravery as a soldier, as the feeling of indignation excited by his summary removal from the place of Postmaster of the city of San Francisco, by General Taylor, and the appointment in his p ace, of one of the most violent foes of the war, and one of the bitterest opponents of the ac uisition o California. He had held the Post-Office but a short time before he heard of his removal, by an Administration that came into office pledged against proscription. During this period the office did not render half enough revenue for his support though the duties of the post required his constant attention. He won the esteem of all who met him, and became a general favorite at San Francisco. "Imagine his surprise, therefore, and the indignation of the people, when they heard that Gen. ' i -an Whig," and an enemy to the acquisition of ; e . 1 lhat 'Y' a9 wdl as j " of hU voluntarily offered pledge, had removed thatbrave and accomplished othcer. The result was, that Colonel Gearv wns compelled to send back his wife and children to the United States, whom he had brought with him in the hope of being able to support them on the proceeds of an office which no mau more deserved. Is it wonderful that the people of California should ri.-e tn ma-s- and rebake an act su unworthy of the fame of Genera Taylor, because execrably cisreputabie and un manly ? "We may now predict for California a brilliant j future. Tue American character is onlv begin ; exult under the influence of aa enlightened and 1 irreMstib!e progres, Marriage of the French President. Weathe and Health at New Oeleani. The New Orleans Bulletin of the th has the following: The deaths from yellow fever at the Charity Hospital comprise 2 on Saturday, 3 Sunday, 2 on
Mouday, 2 on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday, 3 on Thursday, and none up to the lime we made our enquiries yesterday. This indicates a slight increase iq ine oisease, out we nave uui anything of its progress in private pract.ee. In other respects the city continues healthy. The weather during the week has been less variable, with fewer showers, and the prevailing wind from the North. The accounts from the the interior with regard to the cotton crop con tinue to be highly unfavorable. The New Orleans Bee of the 7th says: j We had prematurely congratulated ourselves upon the advent of autumn, cheated into the belief that summer wns over by two or three deceitful days of moderate heat, with pleasant mornings and eveniugs. Yesterday, however, the weather was of the boiling order and might have cooked a beef steak to suit an Englishman's palate to a turn. Notice The Synod of Inciana (Old school) will meet in Indianapolis on Thursday of the present month, (20th instant,) at 7 o'clock, P. M., at which hour the session will be opened by a sermon by Rev. On Domestic Missions, Sabbath afternoon, at 3 o'clock. On each of these occasious addresses will be delivered. Some returned Missionaries will in be attendance, and take a part in the exercises. It is expected that these will be occasions of lively and profitable interest Members of the other churches i n the city , and the public generally, are invited to attend. Rail Roaij. The work on the. Rushviile and Shelbyville Rail Road is progressing finely, and promptitude in the payment of the instalments of stock due and to fall due is all that is requisite to keep it going ahead. The superstructure for nearly six miles, commencing at Mud Creek and running west, is ready for the iron, and two excellent saw mills are cutting timber "day and night' for the continuation. The contractors are putting down more than a half mil every week. Part of thu iron is ready at Pittsburgh, and will he shipped to M dison as oon as the Onio rises a little. Push ahead! say we to the company, as rapidly us practicable. Let us have no faltering in any quarter! Let the road be completed "imnier.iately , if not sooner!" The deput at this end of the road was raised on last Saturday. Ru-hvide Repuuiican.
