. i. & jr. it. ovix;to, i:tior. lin.DAV, .MAY 1, 1NI9. Democratic Aoiuiiiatioiis. FOR GOVERNOR, JOSEPH A. WRIGHT OF FA TIKE COUNTY. FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, JMsIES H. LAWE of i EAr.r or.N county. FOR COV-,RES, SECOND EISTRICT. CYRUS L. DUNHMvI OF WASHINGTON COUNTY. 7 (Zj'Au edition of near five hundred copics ot the Daily was issued yesterday afternoon. We thought that these would be enough and to spare, but were disappointed. After the entire edition was exhausted, more than fifty persons called at the office to get papers. Henceforth we shall print an edition large enough to supply any demand. O We should have mentioned yesterday that we are indebted to Mr. Galusha for late New Orleans papers, and to Capt. McRae for similar favors from St. Louis. IT Cucumbers have made their appearance m the Cincinnati market. Cholera Is not far behind. U"The wind of yesterday succeeded in raising a pretty strong blow about sun-down last evening. During the night there was a beavy fall of rain, and to-day is quite pleacant comfortably cool and clear of dust. O We eee that preparations are making for building a good house on the south-west coiner of Broadway and Main-cross in the place of those old frames, which are now being removed. When shall we have the satisfaction of recording the removal of thce eye-sures on Main-cross below Toplar Lane, for a similar purpose. G"The Legislature of Virginia has given Gen. Taylor a sword. lie has cut off the heads of so many office holders lately, that his old sword must be very dull. The new one, doubtless, is very acceptable0- If you would know how they make poplar f-hingles, go down Mulberry street, pretty near the river. No wonder that shingles arc so abundant when they make them so rapid ly. T It will be remembered that at the recent session of our Circuit Court, Judge Cup n inc. decided that the Branch Bank was liable to pay City taxes, as well as individuals. We have been favored with a copy of the decision, as it was written out, and shall liy it before our readers in a day or two. fir4?-"The Whig are as vet without a candi date for Governor in Indiana. We should not be surprised it" they attempted to form a coalition with the Free Democracy. Of course, they will come ia unconditionally , as they object to all bargains and intrigues." On. Globe. Alas and Alack for poor Indiana whigcery. Is it possible that their once proud ettate is so far reduced! The free-soilers --a party that whigcery within six months pat aSfected to despise tells them that if they'd wash their faces, keep their noses clean, and keep still, they may vote for the frie-soil candidate for Governor. Bkinti Nt; Machines. The cylinder printing machines in Messrs. Iloyles' printworks, Mayfield, Manchester, Eng., print a mi'e of cahco in an hour! If 15 of these machine work uninterrupted for only ten hours each day, and for six days in the week, they would be able to print cotton dresses in one such week for one hundred and sixty-two thousand ladies! The actual number of miles of calico printed by this eminent firm alone m a single year exceeds ten thousand , more than sufficient to measure the diameter of our planet with! yfOn the 17th of last month, delicious strawberries end blackberries were abundant in the Iew Orleans markets. Mr. Clay. The Hon. Henry Clay ar med in Ltui.i,ie on Saturday evening. It i? understood that he will appear in an i.nportant dl cisc during the present week.
They Came And more too. To Messrs. J (j-To-morrow we shall begin the pub'iII. K. Wells !c Co. are we indebted for a j cation of the Telegraphic market reports
pair of most excellent ecissors. So, now look out for ulling articles. They sent us,alo, a most beautiful pipr. We fear that in making this present they have done us an injury. A few years since we were a most inveterate smoker, butbv a strong and difficult effort broke the habit. So soon as we saw the nice pipe, we felt the gnawings of our old appetite. We're gonl? we know it. But, no matter; we'll smoke "the pipe of peace" with all our friends with every body if they will join us, and pvj" those who gave it to us. When care comes, "In mind compos'd, we'll suck: thick curling clouds Of smoke shall round our reeking temples play. Joyous we'll sit, and impotent of thought, Pun away care and sorrow irom the heart. As our neighbor of the Banner occasionally indulges in a pipe, he may come and look at ours; but he sha'nt puff" it we'll do that. ID" The organs at Washington don't pub lish the removals and appointments any more but they are going on. The second Washington is ashamed to let hi3 deeds be published. Deaths in New York. The report of the City Inspector of New Yoik for the year 1848 states that during that period the deaths by disease and casuality amounted to 15,019, of which, 1,723 were by con sumption. IIP The Wheat crop in the North-eastern part of Missouri is said to be very promising. fjr-Some kind hearted man "nipped i1 the bud" a very interesting local item jor us last evening. A pair of restless horses attached to a wagon were about to go over the Main-cross street course in double quick time, and but for his interference, there might have been quite an interesting race. Kidxaiter Convicted. Richard Dillingham, a Quaker, from Ohio, who was arres ted in December last for having in his possession three slaves, whom he intended to carry to a free State, was convicted of the offence at Nashville, Tennessee, on the 1:2th ult., and sentenced to three yeais imprisonmentin the penitentiary. Ilcconfessed his guilt, saying he alone was responsible for the error into which his education and feelings of philanthropy led him. Virginia. Yesterday we received the first number of the Madison Dailv Courier, edited, printed and published by S. F. &. J. B. Covington. It is a well-filled, neat, and sprightly paper, and is to be issued every evening. Madison, with her present business and population, ought to support two daily papers, and support them well t"0; but it remains to be seen whether it will or can be done. We hope that our neighbors of the Courier will meet with the encouragement which their enterprising spirit deserves. Banner. Thank you, gentlemen; that's done very genteelly. When the gold comes from California all these articles may be substituted with the yellow metal. in telegraphic connection. In New York i Philadelphia and Cincinnati, the merchants meet "on 'Change" at 12 o'clock, noon, and the market reports for the day are made up by 1 o'clock, P. JL They will be receded here and published by us at a few minutes after 1 o'clock, and before they are published in any of the papers of those cities. This arrangement will place in the hands of our citizens the market reports at least i thirty hours sooner than they can be derived from any other source. It is true that the publication of these reports is attended with a good deal of expense, but wo trust to the liberality of our citizens in the way of advertising, jobwork and subscription to repay us for our expense and labor. By our patronage we shall judge whether or not the citizens of this place prefer a good or poor paper. fjrtr Attention is called to the advertisement of the Cadets of Temperance. We hope that our citizens will encourage this organization by patronizing their Concert in a liberal manner. 0Three dwelling houses in Jeffersonville, were destroyed by fire early 0:1 Sunday morning. A WAY-SIDE DREAM. BV BAYARD TAYLOR. A warm and drowsy sweetness Is ctealing o'er my brain; I see no more the Danube Sweep through his royal plain I hear no more the peasant girla Singing amid thegraiu! Soft, silvery wings, a moment iSeem resting on my brow; Again I hear the water, But its voice is deeper now, And the mocking bird and oriole Are singing on the bouh! The elm and linden branches Droop close and dark o'erhead, And the foaming forest brooklet Leaps down its rocky bed; Be still, my heart! the seas are passedThe paths of home I tread! The showers of creamy blossoms Are on the linden spray, And down the clover-meadew They heap the scented hay, And glad winds toss the forest leaves All the bright summer day. Old playmates! bid me welcome Amid your brother-band; Give me the old affection The glowing grasp of hand ! I worship no more the realms of old Here is my Father-land! String Style of Pantaloons. The hue is a cross between that of pea soup and dirty water, with a Btray touch of the green scum of a frog pond; and the proud wearers go up and down J Chesnut street, like so many ball fro cut on a plearars excurtlon.
A DISCOVERY FOR PREVENTING FIRES. Lomon, March 1, liLh At a recent meeting of the Royal Institution,
heii about a week siuce, an important paper was read, w. hich is making some talk among the seientifiC men here, and is of great interest to the world at large. Its importance induces me to .-. .1 . i . .., ,.,,. write vou an account of it, m oruer that vou may have the pleasure to be amor.g the first of the . , f , - ,-" journals of America to call pubac attention to an . . f ,, ., , : , ; invention at onee ?o perfectly simple hi its pe- - 1 ralion, evolving a familiar effect from a well known cause, and vet, in its application, of such vast and incalculable value. It is no less than a discovery, by means of which carbonic acid gas is applied to the extinguishment of fires with comfrom the usd of water for a similar purpose The paper to which I refer was read at the meeting last Friday, by Rev. I Barlow, and w as an account of an invention of a Mr. rhillips.c ed "Phillips Fire Annihilator." The paper has since been published in the annals of the societv .1 -r 'M 1 . . r . at length. I will rive you an abstract of its pur- ' & J 1 port in a few words. - 1 In large fires, flame is the great agent cf de- j structiou; it occasions a violent draught, intense ' heat, and rapidly generates BufTocating and noxious gases. For its existence a constant supply of pure air is necessary, as well as a constant high temperature. To prevent the latter water is sufficient, but not so to prevent the other condition. The ,lfire annihilator" subdues flame by preventing effectually the supply of its vital element pure air, and supplying instead one destructive to its existence carbonic gas and steam thus ren dering the continuance of flame impossible, j These are generated by this apparatus, which is ! perfectly portable, for one ample for a private house weighs only about twenty-five pounds. It j is so contrived that by simply touching a spring j this active agency can be aroused in three seconds j of time. For the protection of larger buildings J such as churches, factories, &c, a larger appara- i tus in proportion will be required, in a convenient j position. The potency of this invention w;u ex- i bibited in several different ways in the lecture 1 room. Models of houses, ships, Ace, were set j on fire, and when fully ignited the fl rne was ex- ' tiiifjuishtd as soon as the annihilator was broujrht ; to bear upon it. ; The creat advantas of this invention are the instantaneous etT--ct produced, long before a tire engine could have been got in preparation or ! brought to bear upon the hre, and the complete freedom from ntiy injury t' furniture inseparable (rem the employment ot water.
