I Chinese Immigration. i New York, Aug. 27. John R, Young,
ex-minister to China, In au interview yesterday, said : "The emigration from
' China'' comes 'from i one point alone, Canton. Canton is a city of a million j people, the center of a vast province, f The most southern port In China, withj in seven hours of Canton by river, is I Hong Kong. Heng Kong is a British ' settlement, as much under the British Hug as is Cork or Liverpool. All the tmflic in the way of emigration to America comes from Hong Kong mainly tbrougn English houses. Then1 In no stipulation or treaty, and there can bc none, to justify us in asking the Chinese to prevent Chinamen from going from Canton to Hong Kong Once there, they are free from Chinese influence. If the American government wishes to reach the emigration question, it will have to go to Lord Salisbury and a-dt him to so instruct )us government in Hong Kong, that there may be no emigration. The British Governor general at Hong Kong, whom 1 know very well, and whose guest I have been, said he wan perfectly willing, if the American gov eminent wished it, to stop tho emigration, but I had no instructions. There js nothing in t lie record t show that China haw ever endeavored to evude the treaty. On tho contrary, she haH ; enforced it even more Hlringenlly than Miy requests of ours calls lor. The Chinese don't care for tho emigration. i They wound stop tho whole thing to- ' morrow. They do not, of course, like tho idea of other nationalities being sccpptod in America and thev being Icxcluled; but that is a (potion of priile on their part." Keiley is Again at Home. Nkw York, Aug. 27. Anthony M. Keiley, who was appointed minister to Italy but afterwards transferred to Vienna and rejected by the Austrian government, arrived here yesterday with his family on the steamer Rbynland. In an interview, yesterday, Mr. Keily said: "Any government, according to International law, from tho fact of its sovereignty, has a perfect light to receive or reject whoever may bo appointed as minister to it. International courtesy, even, does not require an explanatoin; but when a governs ment assigns reasons for rejecting it must be judged by the strength of those reasons. It is almost impossible for any American to understand how a man can br. rejucted as a minister to a civillized government because his wife is a Jewess, as my wife is. That is tho reason, so tho newspapers say, which the Austrian government assigned for my rejection, That was tho only objection made that I know of. It is an objection I cannot remove, and I never would if I could. For the Austrian government to give such a reason to a government founded on the principhs of this government, is an anachronism, and is scandalous. It affronts tho United States and insults tho nineteenth century. Italy is a growing and strong neighbor of Aush tria. It gains with rapid step on its neighbor, and Austria fears to offend it. Alter my Appoint ment to Italy, I was informed that the views I had oxpressed about the action of the Sardinian Prince in 1871, in violating tho papal territory, would make my reception at the Roman court cold, and seriously impair my relations with tho Italian government, It hold the same views now that I did then, and my beliefs on questions of right and wrong can iot be changed to get an office. There U no doubt that the present government is the choice of the people ol Italy, and the fact is that their choice has convinced me that it is the proper government; but the question of the dominion of tho Pope is distinct. aibitmment settled that, but not the right of it. Tho two provinces of Austria that adjoin Italy are known as the Italian provinces. They are peopled with Italians, , Their sentiments are Italian, and their feelings and desires impel therri to unite with Iuly, Aush tria knew this, and tried to bind them to herself by doing what would please tho people of these provinces, and what would not offend Italy. She wishes more for the friendship of Italy than for the alliance and friendship of the United StateH. .What I shall do now, I don't know, I was city attorney of Richmond before I was appointed. I resigned, sold my library and my house. Now I am broken up, root and branch,"

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE!
Yesterday evening abouu 0 o'clock the town was startled, by a man ridding to Dr. Donnell's offioe and then to Dr. Payne's office, and announcing himself as Cornelius Hill, who desired the doctor's services at the house of Mr. Perry Gribben, who lives south of this city, saying that Mr. Gribben's son, Bert had attempted to kill himself, lie first came for Dr. Ossie Donnell, but that gentleman being away from home on professional business, Mr. Hill called on Dr. P.W. ray no. After Mr. Hill's excitement was somewhat cooled be stated that Bert Gribben attempted to kill himself by shooting a ball from a pistol into his left breast. Further particulars wero elicited, to the effect that young Grib ben had been paying his attentions to a young lady named Ilarter who lives coutiguous, and who is the daughter of the old gentleman who is engaged by the democrats each campaign to nlay the fife, as he is an expert on that instrument. It was further elicited that Gribben and Miss Ilarter had a falling out at a picnic, recently held in the neighborhood, and thnt nfter ronching home, he call"l on thfl young lad u ask her to "make up," which she refused, llo then asked if everything was at an end between them, to which she replied, "yen," Then said ho "this is the end of me," at the same time drawing hiH pistol, and shooting himself with do.idly Intent. Dr. Payne says the ball penetrated tho left breast above the 'nipple ami entered the lung. Gribben bled freely, before the doe tor reaehed him, and it is his opinion that it is almost impossible for tho boy to live,
