T. 0. Address, College Comer, Ohio. "A Penny for j our Thoughts." It is a common request; but how many pennies it would take to buysome thoughts! How many blissful dreams would be dissolved could they be purchased and made known; how many hearts that now throb peacefully would be set aching, How many sunshiny faces would be clouded with gloom. Ah it is well our thoughts cannot be bought; else would this merry bantering question sometimes prove the questioner's death-blow. And yet there are two sides to this, as well as to most questions. How much mo re than the offered "penny," is the A-ind thought worth ! the charitable, palliating, forgiving thought. Withhold not thaV. It were free to the cripple, wings to the leadenhearted, manna to the famishing in this world's wilderness. There are a thousand ways in which a skillful physician can gite a drop of balm. A cheery look, or smile, even toward a stranger, will sometimes turn the whole current of his miserable thoughts, beguile him out of his downcast looks and morbid reflections. Don't wi it for an introduction to a drowing man. Throw him a rope and pull him out; never mind what his name is. Bring him ashore. A pleasant Style of Dining-. The French have a pretty idea of dining. They dou'tmake a solemn business of it as we Americans are apt to do. It is with them a joyous alfair, enlivened with pleasant fcmall talk, wit and repartee. The table is gay with bouquets and wreaths, and the dishes being brought in hot fvovz the kitchen and handed round to the guests, there are no lukc warm soups and meats and chilled gravies, to disgust the palate, and ou half-denuded joints and skeletons of fish and lowl to offend the eve. At a ceremonious dinner every lady finds on her plate a fragrant nosegay. The dessert too and a Frei:.eh dessert is as picturesque as it is delicious is ail arranged on the table before the meal begins. The dinner at this season usuaily"open" with ajcourse of littie Ostend oysters, on the half shell a couple of dozen or so to each cuest. Then came the j sounds such sounds are not prepared anywhere out of France. There is one made with kttic freshwater lobsters, that is supreme-. Fish -succeeds, aad then cau:e tbo solids, if such efcuerial Ikiicgs -as j chicken and lobster fricassee with i it. ir u fti e s and in u s h r o o in s , ! 'ragouts, ii-s.ricots, .white S aneats dressed with cream, brown j V 1 lit-. t i jneais scuneu aim mntcd, aiui game, may be so called. Salads, the 'Mixing,' of which would have reconciled Nehuchadnazar to vegetarianism come next, and & long catalogue of delicate "goodies" closes the repast Light wines are lightly dipped into dui-iug its progress, and light hearts give a zest, to the entertainment. Englishmen kwi lugubriously. So do we. Why can't we be mer-ry over our meals like the French. ' 3Iirth helps digestion. Taking- Portraits. Was ever a portrait of a dear friend satisfactory V was the chin like his ckin? or the eyes, nose and mouth those which he inherited? Or, if Jill these were Recording to rule and plummet, why, oh why, did the artist select his very zcorst expression? When his smile was such a pleasant thing to remember; when his head, inclined this way or that, was so much more natural; and so the picture is shrouded with gauze and hung away, with the Verdict, 'not a bit like him," inscribed upon its canvas. And yet it is like, after all; it has two eyes, a nose, and a mouth, and is as like as a picture can be, when the person is pushed into his Sunday cloths, :uid requested by the artist, "to wear a pleasant and smiling c x p r e s s i o n ," w h i c h , of course, is the most infallible recipe for producing just, such contortions of phy siognomy as drive distressed friends mad. We once knew an artist engaged in taking the picture ol a young lady, stick Ins penknife in the wall,- and request her to " keep her eyes fixed upon that." Need we tell the result of such sharp practice; or wonder that such a portrait should long since have, served for a chimney fire -board. A Terrible Vice. Prnnkeness is alike the the g.iave of manhood and of virtue; the homicide of ie:lJ.n of that noble faculty which the ev.ds have given to mankind to distinzuUh them from the creatures of the field ; put alas ! how often is their benevolence wronged bv its perversion ! How often is societ v outraged by the folly and madness of the wine cup, and man, the nearest to the gods in wisdom, strength, and beauty, by hi? own act, by the inunle nee or the worst of vices, degraded to the level of the brute! We see them on our streets the scoff of childhood, the Koni of the wis?, the. inferior of the ? -t I". While such men exist, the ahars of Bachus need uo lireatoii.b; garlanded for the .KriRA'C, tha herd of voluntary l is are v.-ail hi temple.
