Forkst Trkk Seeds. The numerous inquiries, says the American. Ayru nUurist, as to the treatment of seetls show that much interest in felt in the raisins: of forest trees. We repeat the suprsrestions male once before, that unk.-s one is in- ' lending to plant hu gely, 01 has abundant time to devote to his seed bed, it will generally be cheaper to purchase seedling trees than to raise t.iein. There are several nurseries which, make a specialty of seedlings of f.uxst trees, and offer them at exceedingly lev prices. We here condense a few poitils for those wl. wish to grow trees from the seed. Of the trees generally planted a few ripen their seed in the late spring or early summer. The seed, if kept until the following spring, will be worthl ss, hence it must be sown immediately ai'.er it is gathered. The red maple Am- ruin-urn.) the silver or white maple (. I. !'i--;-c"ij. ',,) and the elm ( VI iima A merirituo) have this peculiarity, and whoever would raise these must make arrangements to procure the seeds as soon as ripe, and sow them as soon as received. Jf the seeds are good they germinate promptly, and make nice little trees by autumn. There are many tree seeds that may be sown in the fall, hut there is so much rhk ot loss by mice and from other causes tliatit is gem rally preferred to keep then) until spring. Much depends upon the, manner of keeping through the winter. All the hickories, the black walnut and the butternut are best kept in heaps made upon the ground and covered iirst with sods, and then a few inches of earth, or in the absence of sods a layer of" bog-hay or straw may be placed over the nuts, and the earth heaped over thai. .Nearly all other seeds, including thin-shelled nuts, like chestnuts and acorns, are best preserved in sand. The sand should not be wet, nor should it be perfectly dry ; it should ieel slightly damp when handled. Saiul as it is thrown out of the bank in elry weather is often in a proper condition of moisture. The object is to prevent the nuts from drying, and to so separate them that there will be no elanger of healing; if the sand is too moist the seeds w ill rot. The seeds should usually be mixed with twice theii bulk of sand, and be well distributed throughout it. For small quantities of seeds in sand we have found Mower-pets with the holes plugged up very convenient. The seeds of many trees will germiuate freely if kept elry, like garden seeds, until spring, but the use of sand is safer. They should be kept in a cool place through the winter, and with some very hard-shelied seeds it is we'll to let them freeze and thaw a few times. The need of evergreens are best kept if allowed to remain iu their cones, though if fresh they generally kcq well ! when removed. Much of the failure with these is due to s-owinsr too late. Cuttings ef willows, eettonwoods, and other trees raised in this manner, should be a foot er so long, and about half an inch in diameter. These are best cut in the fall or early winter, tied securely in bundles, ami stored iu sandiu the cellar, or buried in well-eirained sa ndy soil. rouTAiu.K Piti-rr.x. A writer in the 'Country Gentle nton has used the following plan for a cheap and portable pig-peu for store pigs, and finds it very convenient: It consists of two portions the sleeping box and the yard, both portable but not fastened toget her. Two men can lift each part separately an el carry it into fresh ground, when the yard needs cleaning out, and weeds, rubbish and potato tops can readily be thrown into the yard from a cart. The yard is made of inch spruce fencing stiips, four inches wide, ten or twelve feet long, nailed to three by four inch spruce posts, placed at the corners and in the mieldle of each sieie. As the posts do not enter the ground, two men can easily lift the yard ami carry it to fresh ground. Five strips are used on each side, with three inch spaces between the strips. Ou one side of the yard, two of the strips reach only half way, leaving an opening from the yard to the sleeping box. A trough of one and a half inch spruce, six inches wide nailed together at right angles, is used for feeding in.the yard. The sleeping box is of matched boards,
four feet by six feet on the floor, thirty inches high in rear, and forty-two inches high in front, which is partly open, and stands against the opening iu the yarel. The roof slopes from front to rear like a lean-to shed, and there are two handles at each end, by which two men can lift it for removal. This box stands on legs, w hich raise the floor eight inches above the ground, keeping it dry in wet weather. liy littering it well the pigs will thrive in quite cold weather; but this arrangement is intended chiefly for summer use, when we generally carry a larger stock than can be accommodated in the more comfortable winter quarters. Eight or ten pigs just weaned are put in one yard, but as they grow larger, a smaller number only should be allowed. The yards will need removal and clean- " ing out once in two or three weeks. This 'dan could be used, perhaps, by those -mers who feed their pigs on growing removing the pens daily, much o same principle as the English i feed their turnips and other sheep, in the so called " hurdles." box together will need about red and fifty feet of spruce f 1 can be made in half a flay inary man who can handle Ioofs of Colts. In many
instances the insensible portion of the hoofs of colts and of vouna horses will i
grow out so round and flat that fragments sometimes will be broken oil. This is metre particularly the case, if colts are allowed to run at large occasionally on hard ground and gravelly and stony lands and hard roads; the hoofs will wear fast enough, as nature evidently intendeel they should. But, if young horses are kept on smooth turf, j their feet must be kept smooth by arti- ' ficial means, i h most, convenient way to trim long hoofs is to let one person hold a block of haul wood against the hoof, or hold the hoof on the Mjuare end the wood, while an attendant cuts of! small pieces with a slum chi'-el and mallet. Use an inch line chisel rather than a larger one. and as a two-inch chisel w ill require heavie r blows with a mallet. A pair of sharp nippers (sometinos vulgarly culled snip) may often be eniploycel for such a purpose when a colt is so restive that the chisel and mallet cannot be used. We have in mind a colt having unusually long hoofs, which had in his play stepped upon some hard substance j tul l.n.L.o. ..(Mho fV,,t r i, art nf J v " ' 1 " the toot to the quick. Merchant's Gargling Gil. This standard liniment has bten before the lteople for over forty years, it having been first manufactured in 1833, ami it ia safe to assert that ne preparation in the market has so fully stood the test of time, and been recei veil with such universal favor as the Gargling Oil. It is found in nearly, every household in this country, and is also solel extensively in Europe. From a very small beginning the Gargling Oil Company has been obliged to steadily increase its facilities for manufacturing, and now employs an army of men, ami occupies magnificent buildings of its own. Much of the success of the company is due to the careful and efficient management of Mr. John Hodge, w ho for some time has held the responsible position of Secretary, and who is also the proprietor of the J lodge Opera House, one of the finest buildings in Ixiekport, N. Y. The Gargling Oil is for sale at all the elrug stores. Quincy (Ills.) Wiiy. Over four million sewing machines have been sold since they wrere first introduced in 8o3. J. & P.
