For the last two years no work has been done on the Indiana and Illinois Central Rail Road in this State, except at the crossing of the Wabash; and the
question is now daily asked by the stockholders, "will the road be made?" All confidence in its construction seems to have been destroyed by the innumerable
violated promises of its officers and agents,
and their exaggerations in regard to the condition and prospect of the work.—

Three years ago stockholders here were told that a contract had been closed with a company in New York for the con- struction and completion of the road from end to end, and the placing of rolling stock thereon; but that more stock must be taken to meet the liabilities of the road. The required amount was promptly subscribed, and yet a suspension of work followed. The stockholders were
again visited and told that a difiercnt contract had <now> been made for the iron at a very reduced price and that a fortune had been saved by the suspension of the work, in the price of the iron; but in order to insure the speedy prosecution of the road, a half million conditional stock
would be required, payable thirty days after the completion of the road, to give confidence to eastern capitalists with whom the company were doing business. The amount was again subscribed, and yet not a spade, a cart, or an Irishman can be found on the line. Nor can an officer or an agent of the road be found who seems to know any thing more about the future prospects of the work than the duped and credulous stockholder. The

only answer to every inquiry is "<I don't
know>." Andyet the stockholders are called on for money, money, money.
I propose to investigate this matter and
make it a subject of special attention until something is known in regard to its
prospects, or the thing is entirely lost.—
