The Butcher-Knife, Volume 2, Number 5, Danville, Hendricks County, 29 August 1857 — Page 3
For the Butcher Knife. Lovcst Thon Meddlers!' Three of the most meddlesome men in the State of Indiana, residing within a stones' throw of cash other, in Danville, were discovered by the Butcher Knife last week, as the editor aGirms, the truth of which cannot be called in question. This snarling triumvirate is too well known here to be misunderstood, and that for meanness of purpose and littleness of soul, they have no competition outside cf the iail. One evening last week, while passing this motley group, standing together Bear one of their favorite places of nightly resort, the voice of one of the trio
was recognized in giving utterance to the following lanrruae spoken in a low wheezuvf tone of one of our town citizci.s, "lie is a mighty bad man. He is at the bottom of all this. But you ought to have seen him when he Sheriff took the press. He knew we had him. He looked mighty lad-, and now I will make him squat." Highly pleased with this promise, the smiling hero from cow-tail commons, replied in sermon style, "we will help thee do that thing." Here all articulate sound of words wTere lost in the dreadful muttering of him of brimstone memorj, in a death-like strug
gle to force a word through the vast quantity of tobacco then rolling between his ponderous jaws For some time doubts were entertained whether his tobaccoship was for or against the "squatting" business. But a second or third effort to speak, ejected a sufficient quantity of the narcotic weed, well saturated with saliva from his burning stomach, to enable those who are

Should a stranger desire to know these self-constituted guardians o! the town, or curiosity incline any one to see the pi. his rascals and hear them disgorge their distempered minds of an over charge of venom upon the head of some unfortunate subject, or upon the people in general, let him take his position anywhere on the public square, in the evenino', about the hour when the hungry wolf slips from his jungle, and the hissing reptile slides from his coil in search of food, and my word for it, he will not go away disappointed. Williams all of this county. With the above notice we received a handsome cake. We always knew that when Jim got married he would think of the printers. We wish the couple all kinds of good luck. 0r In Hendricks and Morgan counties, Ind., the hog cholera is prevailing to a great extent. Numbers of hoge are dying daily, and no efforts on the part of farmers have any effect in staying the disease. A trader at Mooresville, a day or two since, received a very heavy remittance from Louisville, with instructions to purchase stock hogs and crops of corn. He, visiting the above localities, returned in a few days, giving the whole matter up, having found the hogs dying of to such a great extent. In and about Danville we have heard considerable complaing about this destructive disease
