Bishop Floyd of Dublin, will preside. George Pancake, aged about forty years, one of ‘’the industrious farmers and citizens of' Clay township, died last Thursday night of consumption. The funeral services -were conducted by Elder J. W. Richardson at Little Zion church Saturday morning. An exchange from one of our neighboring counties says the chinch bugs are so thick in its section that after devastating one field, they tear down the rail fence between it and the next field and chew it up for toothpicks. If they hit this section like that there will-be a scarcity of winter fire wood for some people. Fletcher Coonrod was badly injured last Friday morning. He with others were engaged in putting up hay when one of the large poles 'fell striking him on the head and back. He was was immediately brought to town and taken to Dr. Link’s office where his injuries were dressed. He had a bad scalp wound on the back of the head and bruises on the back and it is feared that he suffered injuries to the spine. He is in a serious condition but there are hopes of his recovery.

1 here were several lights last Saturday during and after the republican convention in the city. A result of the “perfect harmony*’ which prevailed in the convention. The damages were very slight to the combatants, however. Theodore Taylor and John Miller, two young men of Lockhart township, were lodged in jail Saturday to lay out tine and costs. They were tried Friday for riot before Squire DavisJ who assessed a tine of $1.00 and costs against each one of them. IT is r£ported that the postal department has under consideration a plan whereby the names of postoffices shall be placed upon stamps where sold. This idea is to provide means of identification when stamp% are stolen from any post office, and also to pre* vent boycotting any postoffice, a practice in some of the smaller towns of the country. Samuel H. Fettinger was in the city Friday last and authorized us to say ^that he will not be a candidate before the democratic convention for the nomination of sheriff. He has for several years been superintendent of the county infirmary and as his time expires next week and with his moving to another location and not having the time to make the canvass in [ the limited time he has concluded not 1 to allow his name to go before the | convention. He thanks his friends I for their many kind words of enconr- ' agements throughout the county.

The Hon. ,tohn Clark llidpath of Greencastle, one of the greatest historians of the age, died in New York City Tuesday evening. The remains will be taken to »his late home for interment. / Newton twig, aged .'>0 years, a resident of cht^towhship, died Saturday of consumption. The funeral was held Sunday and was conducted by Rev. Sappenfield. Interment at the I. O. O. F. cemetery at Union. ^ ; The county clerk has issued marriage licenses to the following persons since our last report: William C. Durham and Klvira Hurt. Franklin W. MctJM.uin and Mollie Holding. Walter It. Robinson and Bertha Keeton. The street carnival at Winslow is on in full blast and with a large attendance. Wednesday was the first day and will close Friday., A large number of Petersburg people attended yesterday and a large crowd will go today. It is a big success. George D. Martin has Handed in his resignation to the town clerk as a member Jf the^own douncil from the Fourth ftml. Mr. Martin has been on the sick list for several months and unable to attend the meetings of the board. He left Monday for Sweet Sulphur Sprigs, where he will remain for several Weeks. Wm. J. Whitman and Eva A. Harkness were married by Rev. J as. B. Hayden, at Rev. Hayden's home last Sunday at (> o'clock p. m. Both parties live in Pike county. Mr. Whitman is the son of Mrs. Martha Whitman, and is a sturdy and prosperous young farmer. * The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Harkness, living?* near English chapel, and is a highly respected young lady. There were but a few relatives and near friends present at the wedding.—Oakland City Enterprise. Attention Comrades.—The old soldiers of Pike county, Indiana, will hold their annual meeting on the 4th day of August, 1900, at the court house at Petersburg, Indiana^at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Business of importance requires the presence of every old soldier in the county, at this meeting. Grim was totally destroyed by fire | last Friday night, together with the contents, Mr. Grim and wife were in j this city at the time visiting their daughter and on Saturday morning left to visit their son. Dr. Grim, at Portersville, and did not learn of the loss of their home until noon of that day. The origin of the fire is unknown, and was not discovered by the neighbors until the house was nearly burned down. The stable which stood some distance away caught fire but was put out* The loss will reach &>,- 000 with $1,000 insurance. 1
