Charles Seebren and wife of Princeton, visited friends here this week. Mis Mary Keifer returned Tuesday from a visit to Cincinnati relatives. Dr. Elwood Smith of Mt. Vernon, is in the city visiting his daughter, Mrs. Charles Paul. J. C. Brady of,. Madison township, was badly injured Tuesday by a horse falling with him. Goethe Link and Gene Taylor left Tuesday for Indianapolis where they will study medicine.
Rev. T. B. Brashear and wife attended the Presbyterian presbytery at Washington this week. Postmaster Lamar returned Tuesday from Martinsville where he was taking treatment at the sanitarium. F Mrs. Belle Carleton and daughter Miss Catha returned Monday from Spencer county, where they visited relatives, Moses Skinner, one of the prominent farmers of Patoka township, was in town Tuesday and W^flses^ay on business. Austin R. Logan and wife left for Indianapolis Tuesday. Mr. Logan will complete his studies in the Central medical college. A. G. Cato of Monroe township, was in the city this week attending the institute. He will teach during the coming year near Oakland City. J. W. Parry and wife and grandchildren returned to Fort Wayne Tuesday after a several days visit with their daughters of this place.

Earl Benjamin, aged 15 years, son of William Benjamin, living near Alford, died Tuesday afternoon of appendicitis. Willie Hargrove of Augusta, left j Wednesday for Greene as tie, where he will attend DePauvr University. Dr. H. W. Link has moved his office to the rooms over Adams’ drug store, formerly occupied by Dr. Burlingame. Rev. W. S. Rader, pastor of the M. E. church, left Tuesday for Greencastle to attend the annual conference. _ Sol Frank leaves for Chicago Saturday, where he will buy the latest in fall and winter goods for his store. He will be absent several days. A. J. Abbott, one of the old residents of Jefferson township ljving near Cato, was in the city last Friday transacting business matters. Alvin Capehart, one of the successful young farmers of Jefferson township, is a very happy man these days. This is because of a thirteen pound boy at his home. Mrs. Minnie Lutterick, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Abe Case, left last Friday for Evansville where she will visit a couple of weeks before returning to her home at Pine B,u*> Arta?8a" _:
Dr. E. G. Burlingame has formed a partnership with Dr. McGowen of Oakland City and moved his office fix* tures there last Saturday. The Democrat wishes the doctor success in his new location. The county clerk has issued marriage licenses to the following persons this week: Samuel J. Pipes and Daisy D. Davinport. Charles Rainey and; Maggie Denton. Henry Ficklin and Emily BLNewkirk. TheDemorest gold medal contest took place at the C, P. church Monday evening under the direction of Mrs. McCrillus Gray. The contestants were Ada Staowden, Laura Selby, Maggie Gray, Bessie McNeeley, Lidda Randerson and Mary Phillips. The judges awarded the medal to Miss Maggie Gray. A splendid program of music was rendered.

The smoke company was st ack of the Otwell mill blown down during the storm last Friday evening. Theodore jRuff. while engaged in cutting timber last week, had his left eye badly injured by a piece of the iron wedge breaking off and hitting him in the eye. The teachers and old veterans have had a good time in Petersburg this week. A large number of them have been callers at the Democrat office. When in the city call and see us again. _____ ^_ J. R. Adams & Son have commenced a second story addition to their brick building on Main street. This will make a great improvement and give them additional office rooms on the second floor.
The town board has procured a lot near Alexander & Whitelock's flouring mill and halve placed hitchracks on the same for the convenience of the people coming to the city. Other lots will be secured shortly near Haines’ ware house. The Democrat was in the ;ight for hitching racks and the racks have been put up. , Sam Griffith, commonly called 4'Soup Bone; Sam, ’ has skipped and Marshal Higgins is still waiting. The marshal arrested Sam last Saturday on a paternitv charge preferred by Ida Mav Dame wood. The marshal started out with Sam to hunt bail, and went up stairs over Shea & Nieman's saloon to secure it and left the marshal standing at the foot of the stairs. It seems that Sam did not secure the neeessary bail but took leg bail and lit out the back way, and the marshal is still waiting.
