Simon Levi of Terre Haute, was here over Sunday the guest of Gustoff t Frank and family. Mr. Levi was a former resident of the city. Mrs. Jennie Harwig and daughter, who have been visiting relatives here for the past three weeks, left for their home at Belleville, Illinois, last Friday. Dr. W. H. Link and ‘wife left Monday for Richmond, Virginia, w’here the doctor will attend the national association of surgeons. They will be absent a week or more.

Last Sunday at Hosmer baptismal services were conducted by Revs. Burch and Willis; Fifteen persons received the rights of baptism. The attendance at the services was very large. County Superintendent Corn held a teachers’ examination in this city last Saturday at which 112 teachers were applicants for license. Five teachers passed the examination for high school license. Massey of Patoka township, who has been ill for some months past, is improving. He has bien appointed by Judge Ely as a member of the county council. Many years ago he served on the board of county commissioners, and was considered one among the most efficient oBeers the county ever had. Brown, one of , the prominent young farmers living near Iva, was in town Saturday on business. Dr. T. R. Rice went to Indianapolis Tuesday to attend the national association of the homeopathic physicians. This section was visited Monday evening by a severe hail and rain storm. But little damage was reported. _ Miss Sadie Traylor of Iona, Knox county, visited her cousin, James Green, and other relatives .here over Sunday._ The regular meeting of the Ladies’ aid society will be held at the home of Mrs. Kate Adams,Wednesday afternoon, May 31st. Hannigan Reedy of Clay township, was in town Saturday. He reports the wheat good in his locality and not injured much by the liy. William Robinson and William Gatton and Minnie and Essie Gatton and Flossie Thompson returned home from Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon. Morning sermon at the Presbyterian church, ‘"The World We Live In.” Evening, “Great Men of the Past— Elijah.” All are cordially invited. Perry Richardson of Logan township, was in the city last Saturday on business and ordered the biggest paper in the county to be continued to his address. _ The Indiana supreme court recently held that the new law prohibiting baseball playing on Sunday is valid. There will be no more Sunday games in the state. Joseph Hamburger and wife of Cincinnati, G. Beitman and wife, and S. Joseph and wife of Washington, were here Sunday to visit Moses Frank and family. Ind. Memorial services were held at the White Church Tuesday, there being a very, large attendance. The graves of deceased soldiers were decorated at the cemetery near by. The speakers on this occasion were Revs. J. W. Richardson, F. M. Woods, R. M. Barrett and M. P. Brittingham. Friday evening at the opera house will occur the first commencement exercises of the common school graduates of Petersburg. A splendid program has been arranged for the occasion. There are over forty graduates, the names of whom and their average percent was published in the Democrat a few weeks ago. The admission fee is ten cents. S. G. Barrett of Petersburg, yesterday purchased J. S. Jeter’s elegant residence on the east side, for a consideration of &2,000, and presented the same-to his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Stewart. It is a very valuable present and one which anyone would appreciate. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart will occupy the property as soon as it is vacated by Mr. Jeter, who rill move to Indianapolis in a few days.—Oakland City Journal. ^ ^ ^

The annual report of the condition of the county will be made at this session. mis. xiero uicsson, living m me east part of the city, died Tuesday morning of disease incident to old age. She was an old resident of this city and was aged 65 years. The funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternnon by Rev. W. S. Rader and interment at Walnut Hills cemetery. Joe Patterson® has rented the Arlington Hotel and has refurnished it from tof) to bottom. New house, new furniture, and is prepared to extend first class accommodations at reasonable rates. The house will hereafter be known as the Patterson House, on south side of Main street, between Fifth and Sixth. 50* In the report sent from the Philippines by General Otis of those*' killed and wounded appears the name of Ed Pipes, Co. M, 3rd infantry, who was killed in battle May 23rd. He was born and raised near Arthur, this county, and a sop of James Pipes, one of the old residents of the county. Ed has been in the service for some years and was home on a furlough last fall. He was recently transferred from the 12th to the 3rd infantry. Hon. Goodlet Morgan, ex-clerk of the circuit court, was a caller at this office last Thursday. Since retiring from office Mr. Morgan has devoted his entire time to farming and sheep raising. He has been in good health during the past winter and thoroughly enjoys farm life. He is one of the republican members of the county council recently appointed by Judge Ely, and having served as county commissioner and county clerk* will make a most efficient member on that board.
