Dr. McGlasson. a highly respected gentleman of Augusta, has moved to this place, where he expects to renew the practice of medicine. We hope he may be successful in his profession.— Somerville item. Bert Warner went to Loogootee 1 Monday to pack the gas well and cut off the water. The well has a small! flow of gas and has a pressure of 165 j pounds. This territory is bouhd to! come to the front. The Democrat's subscription list is > booming on the right side. The citizens of Pike county want the news and in order to get it always order the paper that gives all the news. The price remains the same, one dollar. George Mayer and J. A. Perkins of Indianapolis, representing the Seckner contracting- company. The funeral services were held Sunday and interment at the Spraggins cemetery.

Sanford Arnold of Otwell, who recently served in the regular army and was wounded in the Santiago tight,, has re-enlisted in the army and left Tuesday for Fort llobinson. Nebraska. He will be in the cavalry service and will go to the Philippines. ,• The county clerk has. issued marriage licenses to the following persons this week: Joseph R. McKnight and Carrie E. Craig. Willis O. Dj*er and Effie J. Barton, i Joseph Q. Davis and Rhoda E. Barrett. Travis Hale and Marj’ E. Ingram. The work of raising funds to drill another test gas well is progressing slowly. About $1,700 is now subscribed and before another week rolls around &1.000 should be subscribed. Men of large property interests who desire to increase their value should come to the front and subscribe sufficient amounts to thoroughly test this gas held. Don’t stand back and let the held go undeveloped.

Last Sunday^ a large number of the friends of Elder A. J. Willis, Madison township, gave him quite a surprise, it being his LJrd birthday. The neighbors and friends gathered at his home and when he arrived he found long tables set in the yard tilled with ali the delicacies of the seasorl prepared by the excellent ladies. The elder was taken much unawares, but when he had recovered slightly he made his surprisers a neat little speech suitable to the occasion. Between this city and Winslow may fee seen several telephones connecting farmers’ residences. They4 are constructed in a peculiar manner, but answer the purpose. Wire is strung in the same manner as other telephbnes, but the novelty comes in the way of the receivers anti transmitters.. Small boxes or cans are used and one end covered with a thin skin of some kind which is drawn tightly through which the wire is drawn and tied to a button. To call up a neighbor several thumps is given on the box or can as the case may be when the conversation begins.
