El* a^ikt County Jfrao«*t Hi M. JlcC. STOOPS. Out Year, in advance 8ix Months, in advance $1 25 05 E itered at the postofflce in Petersburg for transmission through the mails as sceoudela'* matter. FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1899. To Our Friends and Patrons. For several months the Democrat has had under contemplation the idea oi making extensive improvement:* in the office machinery and putting on a new dress of type. This week^ the paper comes to you dressed in the latest style of type, the face of which is a little larger than that used for the past four years, and printed upon a power press. The hand press which has seen service in the office since the fire of 1885, will be set aside and given 94 rest. It has done good service in the past and thousands of copies of the Democrat have been printed from it 1 With new machinery and new type the Democrat will keep pace with the times and continue to give its readers the cream of tthe local news of the county, state and nation. With its increased facilities, which was demanded by the laVge increase of the subscription list- it will continue to lead in the newspaper field. In our job printing department many new faces of type have been added, together with new borders and ornaments and other supplies, make it one of the best in Southern Indiana. A splendid line of stationery is always to be found in stock. Call on the. Democrat for job printing of- all kinds

j.o our many irienas wno nave paia up and renewed their subscriptions for another year we return our most sincere thanks, and as we are in need of a few hundred dollars mo,re we hope' V that others who are yet owing sinall amounts will show their appreciation of our efforts to give them a firstclass country newspaper by remitting the amounts due on subscription. It is impossible fdr us to call on you in person but hope that this notice will be sujpcient. Asking a continuance of your liberal patronage in the future we remain Yours to please. s Ma McC. Stoops, Editor. Bills galore are being introduced at this session of the legislature in both Houses. Several bills have been introduced creating new official positions at good salaries. There is nothing like a republican legislature when it comes to creating offices. This session promises to become quite a luxury to the people. The friends of Hon. Frank B. Pose}' in this county are redhot over the treatment he received at the hands of the republican politicians of this portion of the state. Frank has been a candidate for several positions during the past several years and the politicians have as often turned him aside.

' There promises to be lots of f Un in the United States Senate when the treaty comes up. There are a large number of senators who propose to vote against the annexation of the Philippines. Senators Hoar and Mason, both republicans, have said their say against annexation. The sc and aL^'royihg out of the Spanish war is creating a big stink in the country. A thorough and complete investigation should be had and no whitewashing of any individual. If the soldiers were neglected and fed on “embalmed’’ beef the people want to know it. £ 3 A bill has been introduced in the legislature to prohibit members from accepting passes from railroad corporations. A great many members nqw use passes to go to and from Indianapolis to their homes, and to other points as well. Senator Purcell of Vincennes, has introduced a bill to amend the constitution of the state and provide that all county officials shall be elected for a four year term of office. This would do away with holding elections every two years. , Some of the foremost of the republican United States Senators are making a strong fight against holding the Phillippine Islands. They don’t want the territory. New Jersey seems to be the home of trust organizations. The linseed oil trust is the latest combination.

1' t ■ ■ ' j > ¥p to the time of going to press there has been no bill introduced by the legislators regiR-ding thistles. What about the water works question? Petersburg needs a system and the town council should investigate the matter. j At present it looks as if the United States is going to have more war. This time with the insurgents of the Philippines. \ who desire to control themselves. -j here is that dollar wheat that the Press biowed so touch about a year ago when young Leiter had the market cornered? The Press has been very silent for some months on the wheat question. Republicans all over the state are bobbing up hs5 candidates for governor. Even the First district will more than likely have two candidates in Jim Hemenway and ex-state treasurer Scholz. There are now twenty avowed candidates. The cause of bimetalism goes marching on toward victory in 1900. Thousands of voters now- see their error in voting for the party of trusts. Goldbugism will receive a severe shock at the coming national election. Tl^e farmer and laborer must have a say in national affairs. The republicans have been howling about currency reform for sometime past, but for some reasons since the election of ‘ 1890 the howl has died, away. It was a relative of the restoring of silver by international agreement. Why npt restore silver without the aid or consent of any other nation? ; , The farmer and the mechanic are anxiously waiting fir that “protection- ■ that was prom^ed them in the campaign of 1890. “Protection to American workingmen,” was the cam- j gaign motto. The mottp has been erased since the: election. It looks like it is all protection for trusts and combinations. i

Hon. Nelson Dingley, the author of the present tariff laws, died in Washington City last Friday of pneumonia of ter a short illness. The noted congressman was one of the ablest men in the country and had been in active public life for a quarter of a century. For the" past ten years he has represented the Second Maine district In Congress. Southern Indiana republicans present candidate after candidate for some high official position within the gift of the republican party and as manj’ times have been turned aside. They sometimes get a smal| plum to ease themjlp a little. In the fight for the senatorship Ind|anapolis pulled the plum and now"b»s both senators besides capturing pi the other fat places which hav$ been given to Indiana republicans "from the present administration. The friends of Frank B. Posey now say that the Indianapolis gang can run the machine to suit themselves hereafter.

Indianapolis seems to be hogging' all the fat positions that the republicans have to bestow. A member of the legislature for a joke introduced the following: Be it resolved. That no person shall be eligible to the office of United States senator, speaker of the house of representatives, minister to Aus-tria-Hungary, United States district attorney, deputy United States district attorney, unless such person shall have been a resident of the city of Indianapolis ten years previous to his election or appointment. For a time it looked like it would pass as there were quite a number of legislators who felt rather sore over the selection of a United Stijjkes senator. ' ] Colonel William J. Bryan furnished the sober minded people of this country with more food for reflection when in a speech delivered at Springfield, Illinois, a few days ago, he gave utterance ‘ to the following; “If our nation departs from the tractions of the fathers; if from the desire to make a few dollars out of trade in the orient, we are willing to turn our backs upon all that we hold dear, I am afraid of the influence of that policy upon our own government and our own people. I am afraid that when militarism becomes the rule in our colonies it will be on its way to rule in this country. I am afraid that they may get too near home with the ideas about advantages of a military government. I repeat, that this nation cannot endure half republic and half colony, half free and half vassal. It must be oae^or the otlier, and I want it to be the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
