m IYmbi tbe Gold Fh*ld*. Bar. Alaska, May 9,1898. ' ft. M«C. Stoops Petersburg, bid. My dear air and friend: According to wuadN I write yon. 1 arrived at Seattle, Washington, April 13ih, in .company with Cot. 0. G. Harrow mid wife. We took paw Age on the steamer Cottage City on the morning of the 15th, and sailed for Juneau, Alaska. On the evening of the 17th we unfortunately run on a rock at a point known as Ileiekish Jfarries, and came near hr ipg our ship. The lifeboats ware quickly lowered aud everybody was in readiness to leave the ship, there being about 900 on board; but a few moments later after a thorough examination of the Jiull H was announced tiiat we were in no dauger. The pumps were set to work and the supper goug rang and we were all comfortably seated at tlie supper table. Fortunately the tide was coming in and .after three hours delay we were lifted off .the rock, and on the night of the 19th we reached J unean in safety. Here we found a city of 8,000 people, filled with wide awake, shrewd, industrious, business men, representing all lines of merchandise, oar* lying stocks as high as $73,000, and being .the only supply point of interest ou the Alaska coast and being something like 1,000 miles from Seattle. Juneau is situated On the east side of Gasstineaux channel, iu a narrow valley at tbe foot of two large mountains, being fully 8.300 feet1 high with the mountain peaks capjfd with •now fully twenty to thirty feet deep, with large crystal streams of water constantly flowing down the mountain side
from Hundreds oi ieet above. Here is where the city gets her ubuudant supply of soft grater the year round. Tins particular district of Alaska is Jjg£ J&evoming noted for her quark’ iiu'iv'ig *y*Utstii\.,s, being a number of extensive mi&tsij) full operation and a great n^mbei ju*t !*eing opened up, For miles arouud Juneau, day and night, you can hear the reports of heavy blasting ahots, like a Christinas day back East. I have had the pleasure* of gazing on a number of gold bricks iu reality. Among the number one produced by the Jualin min?* which will produce thousands of .dollars worth of bullion this year. To one who is an admirer of mountain scenery, fishing and hunting, it is well worth their time and expense to make this trip during the summer uionths. At this season of the year it is uut so cold, aud clothed with good heavy woolen underwear aud a Klondike blanket suit and rubber boots oue can keep .comfortable. At this season of the year it js a little unpleasant owing to the constant gaiufallj which is necessary to move this great body oi snow. I am not disappointed but on the ooutrary am very much encouraged over the present outlook, and find that our mutual friend, Hon. A. II. Taylor, had given me a full and complete description of this country before arriving here, and should I retain my health expect to remain here until the first of the year iu the interest of my company. I have visited Dyea and Skagaway in the interest of our company miue, which is 100 miles above Juneau. Here is where the trail sets in hading over the summit thirty miles to the lakes beyond, where the people stop and build their boats and set sail for Dawson City. Within the past few days a number arrived at Juneau from the Klondike district iu possession of thousands of dollars worth of gold nuggets, reporting that there had been some heavy strikes made on the American side in the placer district. There is being quite an emigration from this section going on the “inside” at presjenfc There are a great many idle men here, not being experienced miners, cannot get employment, and as expenses are heavy Jwus become disheartened. Skilled laborers have no trouble in getting work. No one should awe to this country expecting to seek their fortune unless they provide themselves with plenty of expernjg money, as the government officers at the foot of the .trail will not allow them to go over the trail unless they are m possession of necessary supplies for one year. Well, we are having war with Spain. When the word f«achs<l here everybody stuck out a flag as much as to say if the old United States needed any additional aid to call ou the /Htixeus of Alaska. When a steamer arrives from the east newspapers are a ready sale at 25 cents. Thanking you for past favors I remain, yours truly. H. R. Ssrnx*.

Pratt Prospects la Indians. (Purdue University Agricultural Experiment Station, Newspaper Bulletin No, 30, ¥ ay SB. MV.) As a resalt of the cold weather during the month of April it was feared that much of the fruit would be seriously Injured, especially in the southern counties of the State, as the peach trees and Japan plums were then in full bloom. In order to determine as accurately as possible the extent of injury, a large number of postal cards w^h printed quea* tions thereon, were seufc to farmers and fruit growers in every county in the state, with a request that they report at once the true condition of the fruit buds and the prospect for a crop of the leading orchard fruits. Twenty-four counties report the prospect for apples good, forty-two only fair, and nine poor. The only counties reporting a poor prospect for peaches are Dubois, Lawrence, Vauderburg, Floyd and Monroe; while Posey, Spencer, Perry, Harrison, Clark, Jefferson and Switzerland, all bordering on the Ohio river, report the prospect as good. Flovd, Lawrence, Monroe and Vanderburg report a short plum crop; Dubois, Harrison and Monroe report a poor pear crop. The cherry cpop, so far as reported, is only fair. Grapes, blackberries and raspberries promise well, while strawberries were seriously iujuted by the drouth of last season. J. Troop. Horticulturist.

Four doctors gave me up, saying I could lire but a short time. 1 gave myself up to my Savior, determined if I could not stay with ray friends on earth, l would meet my absent ones, above. Gardens are much improved and are doing well. Potatoes are coming up nicely and are a good stand, some fields have l>een worked 0114*6. The fruit prosj>ect is good in most orchards, except apples, which are a failure in localities; blackberries are iu bloom. How Prise Money Is* MtIM. The methods of proceed or* in the United States with -regard to a rowel eaptawd by a warship aw* prescribed in the .prise act passed Jane SO, 1864,and since incorporated with amendments into the federal statutes. The captor is required by this law-to send the captured vessel to a near port, preferably a United States port, but allowably a neutral port. If to a United States port, the vessel is taken in charge by a federal district court, and there are judicial pro-! ceedings ip admiralty, the idea being to determine judicially whether the capture was lawful. If it is so .decided the vessel and cargo are condemned aud ordered to be sold ami the money turned into the United States treasury asprize money. The proceeds of the sate are entirely given to,the captor it the veasal is of superior size or force, while only one Jialf is given if th capture was of inferior force, the United States getting the other half. The sum which goes to the warship is distributed according do the following .rules. Commanding officer of a fleet, one twentieth; j commanding officer.©! the division of the j fleet to which the .captor belonged, one fiftieth: fleet captain, one hundredth: commander of the vessel, one tenth, while j the junior officers and men divide the rest j in proportion to their respective rates of pay. j

Adams & Son. in In the dead of winter when it is uext to impossible for a laborer to secure work it is right to feed hungry tramps who apply for aid, if a person fuels like it, byt now there is little excuse for hoboes tramping about from place to phfoe. A vast majority of the tramps would make very good soldiers but so far as heard from none hare enlisted. The average tramp is a worthless vagabond, who will steal and commit other acts of lawlessness, and citixen8.do wrong who feed them when it is known they could find work if they looked for it.
