Robert Lee of Petersburg, was here Sunday in the interest of a telephone company. He says that a phone connecting with the neighboring towns will be put in the Cottage hotel soon.—Winslow Era. The annual meeting of the Thirteenth district of the C'hnstaiu church will be held at Winslow, April 18th, 19th and 20th. The meeting will be largely attended by prominent ministers from all over the state.
White and Pat oka rivers are now within their banks, the waters having receded very fast during last Week. Many farmers don't think the wheat is as badly damaged as it was first thought, except where it was badly washed. Miss Ida Basinger left last Friday for Valparaiso, where she will attend the Norther^ Indiana college, one of the best institutions in the state. She was accompanied as far as Indianapolis by her father Dr. Basinger, who returned home Saturday. The Pike county Sunday school convention will be held at Glezep, May 18th and l(Hh. The oratorical contest will rake place on the first evening. Miss Nellie Bowman of this city, will be one'of the contestants. The program of the exercises will be published later. Every man. whether farmer, meraiant or mechanic, should have his address printed on his envelope, to insure its return if not properly directed. Mrs. Sarah Ramble, aged SI years, di«d at the borne of her son James P. Rumble, in Madison township, Tuesday night of infirmities incident to old age. The funeral services were bekl at the borne Thursday rooming conducted by Elder J.W. Richardson, and burial at Poplar Grove cemetery. Mrs. Rumble was bora in South Carolina and when but an infant her parents came to this county and for the past eighty years has been a resident of Madison township. Three sons. Eh, John T. and James P.. j and a large number of relatives mourn the of mother and grandmother.

Thomas H. Dillon of this city, candidateo for the democratic nomination for congress, is in Evansville this week looking { after the political situation. He will make 1 a thorough canvass of the district before the convention. Mr. Dillon has been an I advocate of silver for several years and is thoroughly posted on the issues. The April term of the circuit court convened Monday with Judge Ely on the bench. The first case to oorae up for trial was that of the state vs. Minor and Rhodes, charged with larceny. The case is being tried by a jury and begun Monday afternoon. There were 140 witnesses in the case and as we go to press (Thursday) the trial is still going on.

In annotiter column of this issue will be found the announcement of Lyman B. Cook of Marion township, as a candidate for county clerk before the democratic convention. Mr. Cook is a well known citizen of the county and for many years has been engaged in business at Velpen. During the last Cleveland administration he-served as postmaster at that place, and is well qualified for the position of county clerk. Jacob Schmitt, eye specialist, will be at Augusta and Stendal every other two weeks. He has had many years experience in fitting spectacles to the eyes. He will test your eyes so that all inflictions will be remedied by the use of glasses. If you are in need of his services leave your orders at Greenway’s store at Stendal, or at W. H. Scales' store at Augusta, and be will call and see you. I 48-4 A wild rumor came to town yesterday afternoon that a good flow of oil had been struck at the gas well, but the report was without foundation. The well was measured at 5 o’clock yesterday,and found to be 1118 feet deep. Drilling is progressing nicely.— Oakland City Journal.
