* detegatioo from Montgomery and Washington 'visited the Woolley miners and asked the men to come out. Alter a short meeting *it tm decided not to work tor the present. “Mr, Woolley, superintendent of the mines, ordered breakfast for the men, end about nine o’clock they all started on their yray to Littks, and then visited the Japk•on and Ayrshire miners Wednesday. A* a eonsequenoe none of the miners are vorit* ‘jpg at the present time. The miners at were willing go ahead and work, but the operators concluded to close down for a ■hart time. A portion of the miners at Ajtekire were willing to work, while some Toted to stop, awl others were non-commit-tal. A rote of those present at e meeting ‘Wednesday night concluded to go out. There has been no trouble at any of the mines in the county, everything being orderly and peaceable np to Wednesday night and the operators and miners are on the 'best of terms. The operators in this county have been paying tbs scale so far as ‘can ba, learned and for the past two or three 'weeks the men hare been putting in extra time. It is to be hoped that there will be ‘no trouble between the operators and miners and that work will be resumed in the future.
A. 0. V. W. Picnic at Wlnslew. Tomorrow (Saturday) the various A. 0. U. W. lodges of this county will hold a picnic in the grove at Winslow, at which time a number of the grand officers of the affect* lodge will be present and address the members and their friends. The Oakland City and Petersburg brass bands will be pest sot and discourse music during the day. The following is the program of the day's exercises: Dinner... The afternoon will be occupied T. Everybody is invited to attend and bring your baskets wall Ailed and enjoy a day of rest Teel ef Varieties ef Wheat, Winter Oats. Pardo* University Agricultural Experiment " Station, Newspaper Bulletin No. IS, August Z. UK.) The varieties of wheat under trial this geaeon and the'results as to yield, are shown in the accompanying table : The two standard varieties, velvet chaff and Michigan amber, which have been grown at the Station 14 years, not only maintain their previous record but add to it, as their yield in 18»? areslighlty greater than their average yields. The other varieties, without exception, show reduced yields in 1897 as compared with their average yields. The test confirms two conclusions reached in former experiments:—1. Most of the new t*ntie* do not prove valuable, and hence the astonishing claims of seedsmen that the new varieties* will greatly increase yields and profits, are well nigh groundless. S, The standard varieties will not *‘run out" if proper cart is regularly taken to select plump heavy seed and sow the same in good ground. ~ For three yean in succession the Station has attempted to grow winter Turf Oats. The results were absolute failures in 1896 and lt*97. The crop of 1896 yielded 98 and 37 bushels per acre, respectively, on two plats with a fine showing of chess and other weeds, while five plats of a standard variety of spring oats, in the same field and on like sod averaged over 78 bushels to the acre. What ever seedsmen may say to the contrary. it is certainly unwise to attempt to grow winter oats in the north half of the Mate. W. C. Latta. ... tiuuy Mr*. Maud Montgomery * .. Moslc Cm* Name.
