In selecting Mr. Com the trustees did a very wise thing, as he is a young man of ability, thoroughly qualified for the position and we believe he will make a superintendent, that will be an honor to Piki* county.— Winslow Era. Polly Hubbard, wife of Robert Hubbard, dn*d on the 2d of June aud was buried on the 3<l at the old Kirk cemetery in Gibson count v. The decs ased was deaf ami dumb from infancy, was 61 years uld aud hail more than ordinary intelligence for one in her c ndition in life. She was a Christian woman, a member of the M. E. church, a good mother and kind neighbor. Her funeral cortege Was one of the largest ever seen in this community. She leave* a husband and four grown sons to mourn their loss, but they do not mourn as those that ha^ano hope. She told them in her lust moments that she would auun be lit heaven. —Qatsviije item,

Basinger were called to treat the case. The young man i- doing well at pres, nt and will probably recover. Trains now pass Oakland City going east at 2:17 p m, 3:15 a m, and 7:00 a m: going west, 11 :37 a in. 12:31 a in, and 4:10 p in. The southbound train on the K. & I. now makes connection with train going east on the Air Line. Will E, Lamb, one of the prominent farmers of Madison township, reports as having seen one day last week the buzzard that has the bell attached to it. He heard the jingle of the bell and for a longtime wondered where it came from aud finally concluded to follow tlie sound. He soou discovered the buzzard sitting on a limb high up iu a tree. The buzzard soon flew away and will continue to make people; wonder at the strange noise.
The annual commencement of the Lockhart township public schools will be held at the 1'nion church, Stendal, on the evening of June 19th, There are nine graduates hs follows; Ernst Powers, johnny McAlister. A very interesting program has been prepared for the occasion, and it is hoped the citizens wjll all attend the entertainment. A similar thing happened to a w oman who married a soldier of the war of 1^12. She is stiii living and drawing a pension as a widow. It is said that a young and abandoned woman of Marion in one instance, at leigd. sought to turn the head of a foolish old man in the soldiers’ home with a view to marriage and pension. Indiana, permission to conduct water through aud beneath tbe surface of the streets, alleys and intersections of the town of Petersburg, Indiana, atyi-to maintain a water works plant with all tbe appurtenances thereto belonging. v •Section f Be it ordained by the Board at Trustees of tbe Town of Petersburg, in Pike county, in the state of Indiana, that in consideration of the benefits that will be derived by the eitixens of Petersburg, Indiana, and those residing and doing business therein by the introduction of a water works system within said town; that tbe Petersburg Mining aud Manufacturing Association of Petersburg, Indiana, its successors and assigns shall have the right and privilege for the period of twenty fao^ears of laying and piaciug beneath the surface of the public grounds, streets, alleys, .sidewalks and intersections wjthlu said town and its additions, such .pines, mains, tubes, conduits, appurtenances aud devices as may be necessary and useful in conveying water to ihtxius residing and doing business w ithin said town, and to erect plugs, water towers and other necessary dev ices for tire proper distribution aud utilization of said water to consumers. Section 2. That the said Petersburg Mining and Manufacturing Association, its successors and assigns, shall not Interfere with nor interrupt the free use of said streets, all- vr and sidewalks by tbe public more than is absolutely necessary In putting down said pipes, mains, conduits, tubes, and in erecting said -water plugs, lowers or stand pipes and appurtenances, and shall as speedily as possible repiace said streets, alleys aud grounds, after layiug said pipes and mains, in as good condition as they were before saiu work was done. All of said plugs, towers and stand pip^s shall be erected and work done under tbe -direction of the corporate authorities of •he town of Petersburg, and done so as not to ob.ft-uct travel nor Interfere with the use of said streets aud alleys in said town. section if That said Petersburg Mining ar.d Manufacturing Association,its successors and assigns shall be liable and responsible to property owners and all other persons for injury in person or properly caused by thenegligence ot the said association in putting down its pipes, nia:n«. conduits, tubes and appurtenances or in erecting its water plugs towers ami stand olpes or in digging its trenches, pits, holes or by other obstruction to >aid streets and alleys. ■section 4. An emergency existing for the immediate taking effect, of this ordinance it shall be in force mini and afier its passage.
