Tiorian fiartl ol Jefliyson township, is a candidate for county recorder, subject to the decision of the democratic nominating convention. Fbox the tone of the editorials nod the communications now being run from week to week in the Petersburg Press, oue of the republican organs, one would be led to believe that something is hurting the “combination,” otherwise known as the Petersburg “ring.” Don’t get hurt so early in the fight, the batteries have not been turned on yet. Just now and then an occasional “bomb” is thrown into the camp to warm the boys up and let them knotv that the campaign is coming on, when the fight begins “grape and canister” will;be thrown into the rank* and a “galling gun” be brought into active service, and when the voles are counted oat in November it will be found that the tax-payers of Pike county have won a great victory.
Governor Matthew# has given his answer to ■ • republican leaders and will not c« -he late legislature together and <mail an expense of 125,000 on thejai-payers of the slate\ jnsi to satisfy a few petitions. in \ the minds of the masses of the people of Indiana the governor has. doue his Whole duty iu the matter. Many of the leading republican papers of the I state uphold the governor in his actkm. . . * ; Is Ptae county there are six republican Candidate* for sheriff. el*ht for recorder, five for treasurer anrf seven tor commissioner. Everybody wants a slice of the political pie.— Washing ton Democrat. Vou are wrongly infoxmed. There gre thirteen for nberi& seventeen for recorder, four for treasurer and about thirty for other positions. They are all lookiug out for the stuff that the “ring” dispeu *es. Hunter the nominee of the republicans for senator lrom Kentucky, has ; pulled out of the race.fc it is now a go-as-you-please light among the re* publicans with no chances ot victory, The republicans hare a working majority iu the legislature, but are hopelessly divided as to senator. The j same may also be said of the demo-1 crats. • Take It From Jackson. “The uuiou of the democratic party : j it must aud shall be preserved." Isn't that Jacksonian enough for a demo- j cratic battleery this year? says the; St. Louis Republic. Any mau cap, refuse to abide by j the Jmutngs of convention*. If he ' thinks .the reservation of a right to bolt necessary to in* conscientious j discharge of his duty as a voter, all; right. But he becomes a mugwump. Iu assuming the privileges of an | iudependent, he binds himself, to tbiow off all pretense of party attachment. lie can promise noshing to a : party and caunot claim a place in party councils.
>ext lo the bolters the worst • enemies of union in the democratic' party arc those who would provoke j contesting delegations by disfranchise1 ing districts. Ilf-omened birds of the | same black feather are the creatures who mike politics a vehicle of private : malace and weaken the party by insulting its members, with personal vilification. Above all personal interests and all disputes over policies of government, the union ol! the democratic par'} rises as a great national necessity. To recognize the necessity is to by a democrat ;to subordinate the existence ot the party to small ends is to be smaller than a democrat * * In the uatioo, another (ireely defeat would be followed by another carnival of corruption ;by another forcible assault ou the autonomy of states; by another transfer ot Federal powers to the con* centrated money power; by another riveting of the gold standard on the industry of the p^>pie. Union of the democratic party can bis preserved by good feeling in temporary differences of judgmeut; by respect for democratic precedents; by acquiescing iu the decisions of democratic conventions; bv stimulating a party loyalty which will be proof against the arrogant assertions of the republicanism upon whose neck the democratic heel lately rested, and against the romancing of weak brained popu lists at whose pretensions $ healthy democracy used to laugh.
Bag Kale. The democratic central committee of Dubois county has decided that the gag law shall be applied in the nomination of a candidate for judge, oi this circuit. It says that the Vote of Dubois county shall be cast as a unit in the judicial convention for the men that receive the majority of the votes In the primary election to be held iu Dubois county in April. This means the disfranchisement of the minority iu Dubois county and the disfranchisement of the entire democracy of Pike county. It has beeu a time-honored custom in all parties, and more especially in the democratic party, to give a second term to % man who has faithfully
served one terra by election or appointment as an endorsement of his first terra. No one can truthfully say that Judge Ely has uot faithfully and ably discharged his duties* at all times 6iuce his appointment. lie has given geueral satisfaction to all persons in this county without regard to politics or party. He is eutitled to a second term as an endorsement of bis services for the short time he has” served by appointment. To deny him a second term is to wroug him by impliedly and falsely saying his services are 4iot satisfactory to the public. It will be a breach, without cause, of the timehonored custom referred to above. It will be an insult to the judgment of our beloved Governor Matthews, who appointed him. It ivlll be unfair and dishonorable to kthc very extreme. All of the voters of this county without regard to politics are indignant over the action of the Dubois county committee, and every member of the bar of Petersburg feels indignant towards said committee on accouut of the unfair and unjust treatment of Judge Ely; There are several hundred people in Dubois county who oppose the gag rule, but under that rule their voices and votes couut for naught. Clement Doane, the talented fair-minded and veteran editor of the Jasper Courier, and the warm-hearted, eloquent, and brainy ‘*Lige” Cox, our present able prosecutor, opposed the adoption of gag rule, but the committee would pay do atteutiou to them. No fairrniuded man is in favor of that rule. Nor is any fair-miuded man iu favor of violating the time-honored custom of his party by refusing to give the present incumbent of an office a second term as an endorsement of his first. The democracy of this county are in favor of fair play and will have it. We will not take auv part or share in the enforcement of gag rule. The Dubois county committee maygag aud throttle the minority iu that county but that committee can not gag and throttle and disfranchise the democracy of Pike county. This is no threat nor idle words. We know the sentiments of the voters of this county and we voice their sentiments iu this editorial. Gag iule will not work in this couuty. We say to ail advocates of the gag rule, beware ol the ides of November next.
For a Fair Association. Several persons whp are interested in resurrecting the Pike county fair met at the clerk's office last Saturday* A committee consisting of M. L. ileat^uan. S. J. Haines and W. A. Oliphant wero appointed to draft a constitution and by-laws and have the same prepared to preseut at the meeting to be held Saturday, March 14th. This a matter which the busiuess men of Petersburg and all other citizens should take an active interest in. No town the size of Petersburg should be without a fair held each year. It not only advertises the town but keeps money at home. If there is no fair held here hundreds,of dollars will be taken in by the neighboring towns. The result is that the people of this county are several thousands of dollars short when the time of reckoning comes on at the end of the year. Business men have you ever looked at it iu that light ? Investigate this busjftess before you conclude to let it go by default. The business men of Petersburg are more interested iu this than any other class of men, aud they should be the first at the wheel -to push along this enterprise. Nothing can be done without the hearty co-operation of the busiuess interests of Petersburg. Let’s niove in the right direction. | bare' used One Minute Cough cure in ray faintty and for myself, with results sc entirely satisfactory that i can hardly find words to express myself as to its merit. 1 will never fail to recommend it to others, on every occasion that presents itself.” J. R. Adams A Son. The republican candidate is going abroad in the land saying: “Howdy, howdy, how-de-do! how is your wife and bow are you ? It fits my fist as no ether can—the horny hand of the working nan.”
Washington Letter. (From our regular correspondent.) Washington, March 2,1896. If congress doesn’t want a foreign war it should indulge in less war talk. The Cuban resolution adopted by the senate, declaring in favor of recognition of the belligerency of the Cubans and requesting the Presesideoft to use his good offices to towards procuring a recognition of the independence of Cuba, was of itself right enough, aud certainly represents the overwhelming sentiment of congress, and probably of the country, but there were threats, implied and spoken, in some of the speeches made in the senate that are eutirely needless. It may be set down as certain that if the United btates goes to war in behalf of Cuba it will not be with Spain alone that we shall have to tight. It has been Its secret treaties with other European nations which have enabled Spain to retain its hold upon Cuba through other revolutions on the island. But although this fact is well known it is probable that wheu the house takes up the questionjtbis week, an attempt will be made to outjingo the speeches made in the senate before the resoluis finally adopted. The resolution adopted by the senate being concurrent will have no more official weight with President Cleveland than he may be disposed to give it as an expression of the opinion of the senate, agreed to by all but six seuators who were present when the vote was taken; but an attempt is to be made in the house not only to make the resolution sttODger, but to make it a joint resolution. If this attempt succeeds, which is probable, the resolution will have to be signed or vetoed by the President or allowed to become a law without his signature. No one expects a veto, although President Cleveland is keeping his own counsel. The house, has passed the bill authorizing ,the Arizona authorities to lease the schooljamis of the territory oyer the President’s veto. As a sop to ttie populists the republican senators are said to have nearly all promised either to absent themselves or to vote for the resolution of
fered by Senator Allen, of Nebraska, providing for an investigation of the Alabama legislature that elected lion. Johu T. Morgan to the U, S. senate. The committee on Privileges aud Elections will, notwithstanding the protest of eyery democratic member, favorably report the Allen resolution. There is not the slightest doubt that such an investigation by a senate committee would be a clear vi- | elation of the constitution, but that is,7 | course, not a matter to both the average republican senator when he has a dicker in view by which he expects ! to gain some advantage. It begins to look like there was danger of the favorite son business business breaking out in Czar Reed’s camp, one might almost sav immediate political family, if Mr. W. D Walworth, of Boston, represented any considerable number of Massacusetts republicans when be said: *‘I am decidedly in favor of the Massachusetts delegation voting for Seuator Lodge in the St. Louis convention. No mau has any particular claims to the presidential nomination any more than any other man, and it is a very fitting tribute for each state to j name its particular choice on the first j ballot. Naturally some of those ; who are Candida's would be shown. | The nomination would be free from i the suspicion of ring rule or bossism, | and I fully believe would be more satisfactory to the people at large, while a number of worthy men would receive honors to which they would appreciate.” The odd part of this nomination of Lodge is that he has always posed as Damon to Reed s Pythias. Of course Mr. Walworth may only have expressed his own wishes and Mr. Lodge may have known nothing about it. Still such things are calculated to arouse suspicion in the miud of the Czar.
