Farmer’s Institute. The sixth annual session of the Pike County Farmer’s Institute which was held at Algiers on Wednesday and Tuesday, December 11th aud 12th was oneof the most successful ever held in this county in point of interest and attendance. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather the attendance was double that of any former meeting. The interest was excellent throughout the entire session, many of the farmers takiug an actiye part in the discussions. Cal Husselmau and W. B. Stevens gave very interesting and practical talks on the subjects assigned them. They are both successful youug farmers and their papers and lectures were taken from their own practical experience and observatiou. Thero were four very able papers read by tome of our homo taleut which commanded the closest attention and were highly complimentary to the authors. Ellis Craig, a very promising young farmer^of Jefferson township, read a very carefully prepared paper on “Corn Culture," in which he gave sortie valuable suggestions as to preparation of grouud and cultivation of the crop. Mrs. S. W. Chappell read a paper upon the theme of “Better Education for the Farmer and his Family." Mrs. Chappell’s paper was pronounced one of the very best ever read before an institute in this county and that the author was complete master of the subject. Oscar Iladlock another of Jefferson township’s citizens, read a paper entitled “How to Make Homo Happy” which was a very worthy production aud elicited very favorable comment from the audience. Mr. Uadlosk is a very painstaking aud interesting writer and his effort will long be remembered by those present. Mrs. Floreuce Kime of Clay township, one of Pike counties very best writers upou farm and household subjects, had an excellent poper upon the “Duties of a Farmer’s Wile.” Mrs, Kime has furnished a paper for nearly every institute ever held in this county aud it is hardly ueeessary to speak of tho merits of her paper to any oiu^tvho evor heard her read one. Her papers are highly interesting and this was one of her very best. Miss Della Whitman and Mrs. Grin Peed also wrote papers, but we.re not present. Mrs S. W. Chappell was awarded the premium for the best paper. Mr. Craig did not coiinpete. The exhibits of farm products were quite large for the first effort in this direction, there being nine exhibits of corn, nine of butter, four of apples aud four of potatoes. Tho following persons were-award-ed premiums: Best 20 ears of corn, Hesekiah Colvin. Beet one-half bushel potatoes, John Kinman. * Best half-bushel apples, Ralph Chappell. Best three pounds butter Mrs. W. E. Chappell. Best cake, Mrs, O. W. Lett. Some of the other exibitors were giyeu one year’s subscriptions to farm journals. The exhibits were all good. Takiug it all iu all this was an excclleut meeting, much of which is due to the hospitality of the good people,of Algiers aud neighborhood, who did everj*. thing they could to make the meeting pleasant. Tho next institute will be held at Winslow, M L. Ileathm&u was re-elected chairman and Mrs. S. W, Chappell, secretary. One Who Was Thehe.
