The strike at the mines of Cable & Company in Daviess county is assuming a serious phase, and there bow seems to be no way qf settling the differences. E. H. Reedy of Clay township, was in town last Friday and Saturday. Mr. Reedy was at one time a commissioner of the county and made a splendid official. Mr. and Mrs, John O. Dayis came up from Petersburg to attend the ball last night and spend Thanksgiving Dav with Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Davis. —Washington Gazette, r Henry Rickrich has moved from his home on Walnut street to the rooms above his sfore, where he formerly resided. Henry say6 that )ie has both a summer and a winter home. Emory Smith, living three miles south of town, will sell at public Auction on Friday, December 20th, i u umber of horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, farming implements and household goods. The cold weather has now set in for sure. Yesterday morning was the coldest of the season so tar. Mother earth is covered with a light snow, and all appearances go to show that winter is surely with U9. Miss Frank Taylor, teacher in the grammar department in the high school, was taken suddenly ill last Thursday. At this writing she is improving. Miss Tot Hicks is teaching the grammar grades during Miss Taylor’s illness.
Rev. A. H. Kelso, of Priuceton, has been engaged as regular pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian church in this city and has entered upon his work. Pat McCarty was in town last Friday looking after the erection of his brick business room on lower Main street. The brick work has beeu completed to the top of the first story. Austin F. Cabel and Ed. Smith went to West Virginia to investigate gas and oil wells. The gas still continues to flow from the hole drilled at Oabel & Co’s. Pike county mines.— Washington Advertiser.
The wind work has commenced at Washington, the capital of the United States, 'by the republican party. About all that will be done during the next eight months will be to make presidential timber. Will the editor of the Petersburg Press explain the difference between the contracts for stationery oi 1893, 1894 and the one mado Monday ? which is the cheapest to the tax-pay-ers of Pike county ? This may be a leading question but it should be answered just the same. Fleming Bros, moved their livery business to the new building erected on Walnut street where stood the old stable recently destroyed by fire. | They are now ready for business. The new stable is one of the finest and largest in Indiana being of brick and 100x105 feet two stories high. Success should crown the efforts of the Flemings for their great enterprise. Harley Kiuman and R. B. BrazelI ton went to Louisville last Saturday and brought John Durham back for trial. Durham was arrested sometime ago in this county and give bond, and then skipped leaying his bondsmen. Sheriff Mullins at Livingston, Kentucky, arrested him and brought him to Louisyille where hq was delivered to Brazelton and Kinman last Snnda'y. The teachers’ association of Pike county met in this city last Friday and Saturday. The program as published in The Democrat sometime since was fully carried out with but few changes. Friday evening an excellent program was rendered at the court house to a very large audience. The association now uurubers 93 members. Omni vena of the Presbyterian church, lectured on Martin Luther Sunday evening. The lecttfro is highly spoken of by those who heard it: The musical entertainment that was to have been given at Otwell last Thursday evening by the Bierly musical club was postponed until a later date. The farmers’ institute takes plaoe next Wednesday and Thursday. There should be a large attendance of the farmers of the county at this meeting. The program will be found on the fifth page of today’s paper. Notice op Election.—The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Bike County State Bank will be hold in their banking room on Tuesday, January, 7th 1896, for the purpose of electing a board of directors.
