What Are You Going To Dpi It is time that some action was taken toward securing factories for Petersburg to give employment to the many men who are idle from .three to niue months out of the year. Petersburg has but few. factories or mills that give employment, and hence men have to go to other places to secvre employment. # What we ueed is men who have the money and the sand iu their craw to go to work and either go into the manufacturing trade or help , to secure so pie such enterprises for the' Hpbuilding of tbp town of Petersburg. Petersburg is located iu the best coal territory in Iudiana; timber is plentiful for almost all kinds ot manufacturing purposes, aud besides all js iu the ceuter of the most fertile section of the state. It is just such a location as manufacturers would seek were the tacts > made known.to them. Whitq river is in easy access, where much of the timber could be rafted from sections along the river where the heavier and larger timber exists. It is not what yon have done for Petersburg in the past, but what you will do to enhance its growth iu the future, that now awaits you upon every hand. The town will yot grow and prosper unless every mau makes up his mind to get in the lead and pushes the matter aloug. There |s no question but what manufacturing enterprises can be secured if the steps are taken tp secure them. ft is time to do something, and that at puce. Several families have removed |roin this place of late because the beads of the families could not secure employment, and more are bound to follow iu the near future unless something is done to find employment for fhem. What are you going to do?
Under the new law there has been some changes in the fees of the conn* ty recorder. For recording deeds and mortgages less than 600, words, $1; more than 600 words, 10 cents per hundred words extra; for attesting satisfaction of mortgages or other " liens. 2§ cents; for examining title of real estate and certifying to same for gny school fqnd loan and recording pchool fund mortgage $3.50. These tees are collected for the county as guder the old law. I
A Jfe# Law. , The follow in]; net was adopted at the taut session of the legislature regarding the expenditures of money for the poor: Section 1. Be it enacted by the (general Assembly of the State of Indiana. That every township overseer ot the poor and every person who administers relict from the public funds to the poor, sick and ueedy who are not inmates of any public institution, shall keep a record in which shall be entered the full name, age, sex and nationality of every person to whom such officer or disburser of public funds gives relief; the date of giving relief in each instance and the amount, if the relief be In the form of money, or the value or kind, if the relief be in the form of article of use or value. In the instance that relief is given 19 one person for the use of others, the record shall be made to show the number of such recipients of relief, with the age and sex of each if the relief be restricted to a single family, and the name, age, sex and nationality ot each person partaking of such relief, who is not a member of the family of the person int6 whose hands relief is given hy the: overseer of the poor or other disburser of public funds. The said record shall also be made to show the reason tor the giviug of relief in each Instance.
f$ec. Two copies ol the record so kept shall be filed iu the office of thh auditor of the county wherein such relief is given, by every person keeping such records, at least every thn-e months, and it is hereby made unlawful for the Board of County Commissioners of any'' couuty to allow the payment from the county treasury of the expense of the relief of any person who is not an iuuiate of a public charitable institution, until two copies of such record fully conforming to Section 1 of this act shall have been filed iu the office of the auditor of the county in which such relief is given. It shall be the duty of the auditor of each county to transmit to the Board State Charities of Indiana as often as once every three mouths, one of said duplicate copies of each record filed iu his office under the provisions of this act within the period of three mouths precediug the date of such transmission to the said Board of State Charities.’ i Sec. 3. All laws or parts of laws inconsistent wjth the provisions of tljjs act are hereby repealed. Everybody for Matthews. There is no organized movement in Indiana to nominate* Gov. Matthews for the presidency. Democrats are saying that talk of his candidacy is am outburst of seutiment in the party which has been smoldering for some time, and has been added to since the governor went east. While there is no especial organization to the end of binding him in the white house, the democracy is saying that the Indiaua delegation is going into the national convention with every man loaded with Matthews ammunition.~ The solid delegation will be, democratic historians says, a new thing in the Indiaua wing of the party when it presents its candidate. It is told that when Heudricks, McDonald and Gray were aspirants some members of the party kept their knives whetted and carried them in their boot-legs. Now it is said there is not a prominent leader or any faction opposing the governor, either openly or secretly. It is held that Mr. Matthews is especially strong with the cailoushanded farmer, has a standing with business men and has a good personal rating among the conservative republican^ The dgptocrats say that, with Harrison packing the banner for the republicans in *96and Matthews driving the othqr band wagon, Indiana would have such a campaign as she never knew before. One democrat predicts that when ‘be votes are counted the governor will leave the ex-president standing at the post about 7,000 or 10,000 votes late in this state. There was talk of the governor’s wearing Voorhees’ shoes in the U. S. senate a term before bringing him out for presideut, but since affairs have taken their turn it will not be necessary to waste this time, but it will keep peace iu the bourbon family.
Democrats Will File Suit. The suit which will be brought uuder the auspices of the democratic state committee to test the constitutionality of the legislative apportionment act will be filed in a few da\ s says the Indianapolis News. The proposed litigation has been considered in several conferences of the leaders, and attornevs were commissioned to begin the suit soon after the laws of the late general assembly were put in force. Indianapolis democrats who are informed as to the exact program refused $p announce it. They will npt make jpown the names pf the attorneys or of the Democrat whp
will Hand a* plaintiff. The suit, it is pnnomicad, will not be brought in thj« county. It is believed that it aril! be filed in the Vigo county circuit court, and that Senators Tnrpie and Voorhees will be the principal attorneys. The complaint will aver the recent Legislature did not have authority to reapportion the stale for legislative purposes; that the constitution says when an apportionment shall be made, and that under the constitution the year 1896, instead of 1895, is the year in which to redistrict the state. The Democratic organization will endeavor to get a decision from the Supreme court before the end of the yea if,_ Harrison's Bad Management. A republican newspaper speaks of “ibe monstrous democratic deficit of $113,000,000 in two years.” The deficit originated in Harrison's administration which began with a gold surplus, in addition to the “reserve" ot almost $100,000,000, and enough money of other kinds to pay expenses In ordinary times. In other words, Harrison found almost $200,000,000 gold in the treasury when Cleveland s first administration closed, March 4, 1893, all but $100,000,000 of the gold had disappeared, and the system then in motion caused the reductions that afterward occurred, which President Cleveland was compelled to replenish by gold loans—Chicago Chronicle.
Since the democrats knocked protection into a ‘‘cocked hat/’ the republicans have been without an issue, and all the hope they have of success in the campaign of *96 is in a division of the democratic party, which they are already proclaiming as an accomplished fact. We opine that the lesson taught the democratic party at the Charlestown convention in I860, is too tiesh in its memory to afford much consolation to our*republican friends at this time or anv future period. The democrats may differ as to methods, but when the standard bearers are selected by the national convention next spring, the party will rally to their support as one man, and when they have absolute control of the government they will settle the money question to the satisfaction of ihe masses just as they did the tariff question. The independent Indianapolis News says, whether one holds the absurd theorv that the Democratic tariff is solely responsible for the great business revival, or to the still ir.ore absurd theory that the Republican victory of last fall is the only and sufficient cause of that revival, uo man outside of the Populist ranks can deny the existence ot the fact. The improvement in the business situation is steadyand marked. Whatever advantage the Democrats may get out of it will be due to the folly of the Republicans in attributing what was wholly a money panic to a tariff, which was not enacted lor more than a year after the panic began. A necessary implication in this silly argument was that therd could be no goiMl times while this tariff lasted. The facts have sorely discredited this argument.” II Maj Do as Mach for Yon. Mr. Fred Miller, of Irving 111., writes that he had a severe kidney trouble for many years, with severe pains in his back and also that his bladder was affected. He tried many so called kidney cures but without any good result. About a year ago he began use of Electric Bitters and found relief at once. Electric Bitters is especially adapted to cure of all kidney and liver troubles and often gives almost instant relief. One trial will prove our statement. Price only 60c. for large bottle. At J. R.
