The Bute Superintendent of Public Instruction says that where pupils hold Certificates of graduation from the common schools, they are entitled to high school privileges. Where they canned be accommodated at their home schools, trustees must pay their tuition at the nearest high school in the county. By the auditor's annual reports of the various funds it is noticed that there was altogether only $13,489.68 jn the treasury June 1st. The fuuds are exceedingly low, when it is taken into consideration that bonds to the aiuou nt of $5,000 are to be paid this year. The county fund on hand was $9,533.57. The total expenditures for the year was $80,738.42 Enormously large. Tuc business depression and panic has now seen its day, and from every quarter comes the news that factories are 'openiug up and that wages are being increased upon every baud. Let everybody put their shoulder to the wheel and give it a pnsh up the incliue. Don’t Stand about the^street corners and decry, every thing that is going on, but(go to work yourself and do something to bettef1 yourself and your condition and that of others. Thk Indianapolis New9 an independent paper says: Gov. Matthews is entitled to the greatest credit for the way In which he has defended the good name of the state against the attacks of those persons, some of them members of the legislature, who were interested in running a prize fighting industry at Roby. The struggle has been a long and hard oue, but the govornor has wbn, and there can never be another “legal” price fight in Indiana. ■
Jhi* is what the Indiana Democratic platforms have declared iu regard to silver: *•1890: We demand the free and unrestricted coinage of sil ver upon the basis existing prior to 1878.” •‘1801: We believe it absolutely necessary to the welfare and prosperity of the great producing masses that silver should be restored to the plaoe It occupied in the currenoy system of the world a quarter of a Century ago and we hail wjth delight the signs of a revolution in publio opinion In the great commercial nations In favor of a restoration of the bimetallic system.” ' The Democrat will be sent six months free to all newly-matried couples, who go Jp house keeping in Pike county. We do this for several reasons: First, we want them to trade with the pierchant§ that advertise with ns. Yon may put it down as a fixed rule that ipan who is too stingy to advertise his goo^s is too stingy to give you a bargain and in the second place we have an eye to business and ftiture voters in mind, see? Send in your names and postoffice address. Stale Superintendent Greeting has decided that the new law passed by the last legislature requiring theeflect of narcotics ajad stimulants to be f aught in the schools in connection with physiology and hygiene, means that it shall be taught in ail the grades in the schools, to the little ones as *to the larger pupils. Mr. Geoting said the new law would soon be in effect and the teaching of this branch obligatory. Every teacher would be compelled to pa^s upon it. Teachers who now hold licenses will not be compelled to submit to an examination until the expiration of their present licenses. f Speaking of democratic principles Comptroller Eckels correctly 6aid in (tie speech before the democratic editorial convention of New York, “that thev are so few in number as to be stated within the limits of e single sentence, and yet so comprehensive as to form the basis ot the right conduct of thi# government of 65,000,000 ot people. They found their* birth In the wisdom of the fathers of the party and from that day to this they have been voiced itr every democratic platform, sanctioned by every democratic leader of commanding Importance and vindicated by eVery democratic chief executive from Thomas JelVferson to Grover Cleveland.”

Tin beat democratic campaign iiteratufo that the elate committee could send out this year would he the proceedings of the republican legislature of Indiana. This will be sufficient to huswer every want until congress meets, after which the democratic jiarty will have nothing to do but see that the proceedings of oou* greec are widely clfcotatedTh* Public Official a monthly magazine published at Indianapolis, claims that the new county superintendent law is void without a doubt and says that in 1875 a simular attempt was made by the legislature, but the court decided it unconstitutional, the case 'was carried to the supreme court from the Boone county circuit court under the title, The state ex rel Dickerson vs. Harrison. The ■opinion was written by Judge Biddle. Thk case of the Western Union Telegraph Company vs the various county auditors and county treasurers of the state of Indiana has been filed iu the United States supreme court for docketing from the supreme Court of Indiana on motion for a writ of error. The case iuvolves the constitutionality of the sta‘e law of 1893, providing for an extra tax on telegraph, telephone, sleepiug car and express companies. The Western Union Company alleges that the law did not pass the state senate until after the expiration of the constitutional limit time of its session and that the valuation of its property as a basis for state taxes as fixed by the state board was exorbitant, amounting to 1357 per mile, or a total of $2,297,652 for the entire state, exclusive of real estate, machinery, etc., subject to local taxation. State Bureaa of Statistics* The state bureau of statistics already has in its possession come valuable figures as*to *he crop estimates for the state for this year. Under the law passed by the last legislature requiring township assessors to make such reports as are required by the jiureau, 789 of the 1,016 township assessors iirthe state this year. This is not a guess, but the exact figures, taken by copntios, the bureau has prepared an estimate of the wheat acreage in the state this year, and flmi that it will he 2,727,050. As it has already been estimated from returns received 663 townships in the state that the average yield of the state would be 7.77 hushels to the acre, this means that the wheat production of Indiana will be 21.266,878 bushels. The 4 per cent shrinkage estimate would bring this amouui down to }9,3&8,503 bushels, It is an assured fact that the production will not be tar Horn 20,000,000 either way. The oats yield will be 40 per cent of a crop, the timothy yield 50 per cent.
