Arman, presiding elder of the Columbus district of the; U. B. church, was in the city Friday while on his way to hold quarterly meetings below town. A. Drybrough of Crothersville,was here Wednesday on business matters. He has been sick ever since leaving here, but has sufficiently recovered as to be arouud a portion of the time. He will return here this fall.

Com. Robert Cromwell post G. A. R., at Winslow, passed very appropriate resolutions on the death of their comrade and brother, Hiram Williams, who died very suddenly last Saturday night of heart failure. Sherman Wopdry, who has twice before escaped jail at Stoddard county, Missouri, cut his wav out again Mouday. He was arrested uear here a few weeks ago after being shot down by the Missouri sheriff'.—Oakland City Journal. The national educational society meeting will take place at Denver, Colorado, July 5th to 12th. The rate from Petersburg and return will be $31.50. Tickets will be sold July 3d, 4th and 5th, good returning to July 15th. This is an excellent opportunity for persons to visit the great state with its many interesting sights. A basket dinner will also be held. i. James Kelly and Walter Mitchell returned from Indianapolis last Saturday night. They were taken there one dav last week to auswer before the U. S, court charged with violating the revenue laws. They were fined $53 each. The Petersburg ball club has about decided not to play ball again on Sunday. They have not won a Sunday game and concluded that the fates are against them. Last Sunday was the same old story. The Oatsvilie dub downed them by a score of 2S to 13. Try a game on some other day of the week.
A small show raked in a few dollars here Monday. Lard and bacon 10 cents per pound, at Whitaker’s meat market. Mrs. Sarah Cooper of Jasper, visited Dr. Hunter and family last week. Burlingame ot Jasper, will hang out his shingle at Union. He is a recent graduate of the Louisville medical college. There will be a festival at Grange Hall Saturday night for the benefit ot the Sunday school. AH kinds of refreshments will be-served.
The £. & I. railroad will sell excursion tickets for the 4th of July to all points ^ithiu a radius of 200 miles at one fare for the round trip. Mrs. Grustofl' Frank and son Isaac have arrived safe at Mandel, Germany, the birthplace of the former, where they will visit with friends for several weeks. D. L. Bonner, assistant state superintendent of Sunday schools, ” will hold a union meeting at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon, July 7th. All Sunday school workers are requested to be present. The Ladies of the Baptist church will serve ice cream cako and supper at the court house y ard on the afternoon and evening of the fourth of July. Come everybody and get cool, and enjoy yourself in eating good things. The owners of White Sulphur Springs, in Pike county have had built this spring, a ujee two story house, 35x90 feet, with halls and large diniug room, and 25 bed rooms. They expect to opeu the new building for the accommodation of guests next Monday, and it is urgently needed, too, as the old quarters are constantly crowded.—Jasper Courier. A public installation of officers of Uuity, lodge No. 77. A. O. U. W. will occur at the court house July 1st at 7 o’clock. The public cordially invited. All lodges in Pike county are especially requested to be present, At the close of the installation ceremonies refreshments will bcserved at the opera house'for the members of the order and their families.
