S and D. D. Com and F. Hargrave president of the township Sunday school union. After the exercises at thecbhrch were over the children, beaded by Supt. Davis marched to Grove Square on Maim street and feasted on free ice-cream and lemonade. It is to be hoped that the impressions made upon the youth will be of lasting benefit. Roberson; of Oakland City, was here last week and sold Elijah Roy g fine organ Prof. 0. P. Barrett of Stendal, was here last week. The professor has many frieuds here. No Liquor Licenses Granted. Last Thursday was a lively day in commissioners court, it being liquor license day. Remonstrances had been filed against granting licenses to J. K. Heath and W. S. Mitchell of this city, aud A. D. Blacketer of Winslow. The cases of the former two were tried before the board and the latter withdrew his application on Monday after the commissioners had decidtsd not to grant licenses. The cases of Mitchell aud Heath occupied the entire day and were hotly contested on all sides. Thomas H. Dillon Represented the remonstrants and Posey •& Chap; ell and Richardson & Taylor represented the applicants. After heariug the evidence ou Thursday the commissioners took the cases under advisement and ou Monday afternoou Hadlock and Weltou voted not to grant the licenses. " Heath will appeal bis case te the circuit court. « Pensions Granted. Charles Wheeler, Princeton, David A Stockiyeil^fooney. The Boys Surprised. Last Friday evening just as the members of the I. O. O. F. lodge at Algiers were preparing to get down to business there was an alarm at the outer door and the boys jumped at the couclusion that there was a candidate applying for admission, but they were disappointed in that. The fact of the matter is that the boys were surprised by their wives, mothers, sisters and sweethearts. They came not to be initiated into the order, but te give them a surprise iu the shape of an elegant luncheon of all the danties that the season affords. To say that It was greatly enjoyed one only has to ask Jim Hollon and Joel Coan. The occasion was a happy Bocial event and will be long remembered by all present.

Sew Boat for White Slier. George T. Frank and David W. Horton are building a large boat at the Petersburg landing to ply the waters of White river. It will be 18x75 and is being made to draw light. The cost of the boat when finished will be ai*out 11800. It will be used in'the grain trade exclusively. Mr. Horton is the inventor or a patent wheel which wiil he used on this boat. It will be finished some time in August,

The exercises were eery interesting. Next Mbnday evening at the M. £. church occurs the graduating exercises. There are eight members of the class, the largest for a uumber of years. The board met in special session June 1st and passed an order that Griffith's show be allowed to exhibit at $5.00 per night. There being no further business the board:adjourned. The board met in regular sessiou June 6th, and the following business was attended: The complaint of Gustoff Frank in regard to persons hitching on Seventh street near Main was laid over till next meeting. It was ordered that teams working ou the streets after the 7th of June be allowed $2 00 ptp* day. • The committee ou streets and alleys made report that the work was progressing and that all teamsters be required to haul larger loads ot dirt. The committee op sidewalks and crossings were authorized to hire two men to put in crossings. said men to work ten hours per day. * The marshal reported plenty of water in fire cisterns, and he was further instructed io look after them. J. C. Nicely was given the contract to buitd a bridge on Fifth street. Cost $40. The report of town treasurer was approved aud ordered spread of record. The marshal, was ordered to abate the nuisance of men congregating on the various streets trading horses, said men hairing made it disagreeable to the citizens of Petersburg on account of loud and profane language. MeCrillus Adams was elected school trustee for the eusuing term. The vote stood 3 to 1. The school trusties presented a petition asking for a new school house not to exceed in cost over $5,000. A call meeting was ordered tor Saturday evening to consider the matter of issuing bonds fbr that purpose. The following bills were allowed: Bergen A Olipbant, -merchandise_ 1 40 J. W. H, Stewart, orders bought. .... — 22 50 The trustees met in special sessiou Saturday to consider the question of issuing bonds to erect a new school house. After discussing the matter a vote was taken which stood four to one against issuing the bonds.
Squire Thurman’* Court. Squire Thurman has disposed of the following cases during Ihe past week: State vs General Cole, assault and battery with intent to kill; bound over to the circut court in the sum of 1500. ^Jfcing unable to procure bai^ he went to jail. » State vs Albert Duvall and Daniel U. Bail, assault and battery with intent to kill. Trial continued until Tuesday. Went to jail in default of bail. The above cases grew out of the recent shotting scrape at Littles. State vs Robert F. Hart, provoke; acquitted. State vs William Bolin, public indecency; fined 15.00 and costs. Laying it out in jail. Wedding Bells. Not long ago there seems to have been a wedding in dolldom. The J. C. Ayer Co-, Lowell, Mass., for the small sum of twelve oents, in stamps, send a beautiful doll-bride with a most complete and fashionable trousseau. Every little gitl wishes to know of this latest event in doll sooiety, and wants to add to her doll family this latest and prettiest of paper dolls.

Road petition of Elmo Young et al; petition granted and James W.Ridge, Taylor Hearing and James Bowlin appointed viewers. The applications of J. K. Heath and W. S. Mitchell for license to retail liquors iu Petersburg were rejected. Alfred D. Blackeler who made application for liquor license at Winslow 'withdrew his application. The various reports of the conutv officials were approved. William B.; Anderson of Marion ‘township, has been appointed to a scholarship in Purdue university by the county commissioners. The auditor's annual report shows that there is a balance of $9,533 57 iu the county treasury on the 31st day of May. This is something over $8,000 less than last year’s report showed. The board of commissioners adjourned Wednesday after a session of nine days. Claims to the amount of $10,189.15 were allowed. Red Men Elect Officers. Tie superintendent reports the inmates in excellent health. Henry Derring, a young gentleman of Velpen, Pike county, visited in Lynuville two days the ;>ast week.— Lynuville item. The E. & I. railroad will sell excursion tickets for the 4th of Jnlv to all poiuts within a radius of 200 miles at one fare for the round trip. Mrs. Rev. G W. Stafford, who has been visiting friends here and at Petersburg, returned to her home in Topeka, Kansas, Thursday.—Vincennes Star.
The town trustees made an excellent order last week in calling a halt on the horse-trading fraternity from monopolizing the streets arouml the public square. A fire occurred yesterday ju6t at noon. Two barns were burned on the corner of Fifth and Sycamore street. One belonging to the Beck estate and one to Mr. Keith. One horse was burned to death and one escaped, but was badly burned. The los6 will reach $400. The Petersburg Democrat has sailed past its twenty-fifth milepost with flying colors. Mr. M„ McC. Stoops, the present editor and owner, can feel proud of the Democrat's record during the past three years of his administration, but in calling attention to the Democrat's age he editorially states “the future will show decided improvements qver the past."—St. Louis Auxiliary. Joseph Nixon and Mattie Kirkpatrick were united in marriage by the Rev. George Whitman, at his residence last Wednesday evening. Mr. Nixon is a prosperous and highly respected young farmer, of near Arthur, Pike county , while the bride is a highly accomplished young lady of Lynnville, Warrick county Their friends wish them a long and happy life.—Oakland City Enterprise.
