The United Kingdom of Great Britain alone, during the nine months endiug September, 1894, paid the orchardists of the United States #2,,500.000. The greatest enemy f^our .? export apple is the coddling moth. - But the entire crop can be made wormless if the orchardists of the Uni led States will use the following; Use paris green at the rate of one pound to 150 gallons of water. Weigh out sufficient poison for the oapacity of the tank used and make • it into a thin paint with a small quantity of wa ter and add powdered quick lime equal to the weight of the poibou mixing thoroughly. The l»me takes up the free arsenic and removes the danger of scalding. Strain the mixture into the tank, taking care to pulverise and wash all the pofson through the strainer. During the .operation ot spraying, see that the liquid is,agitated with sufficient frequency >to prevent the settling of the poison. Let the first spraying follow within a week after the falling of the iblossom of either apple or pear, then follow this with a second .treatment just before the fruit turns down on the stent when it i« from a quarter to a*half an inch in diameter. The first •praying reaches the eggs laid by the moth in the flower of the blossoms, and the second, the latter eggs laid by fcdated moths. Dotr’t spray while in bloom and if a washing rain follows the treatment, follow' the applic&tiou.”

The statistics of this trade serve to illustrate the beauty of the protectionist theory of selling more to foreigners and baying Ices from them. In 1893, 1893 and 1894 Germany imported the following quantities of wheat in tans: mt ws at United States... 8.302,1* 8.449,381 S.064.9W krgvntina.. 86Uji7 1. A remarkable fluctuation la also witnessed in the wheat exports of Russia to Germany. The year 1898 iras a period of bitter animosity between Qermaoy and Russia, and the feeling manifested itself in all the relations of the two countries. It was the year when Russian loans were proscribed in the Sermon money markets, when the late war listened with oomplaoency to the sailors of republican Franoe singing the Marseillaise hymn in the harbor of Cronstadt, and when the Russian bear lanced along the boulevards of Paris. But since then the attitude of Germany tnd Russia toward each other has vastly changed. They have both lowered their protective tariff barriers, and mutual trade has resumed its aocustomed
jnanueia, Bat most remarkable is the increase >f German imports of wheat from the Argentine Republic. It is not pretended ;hat the wheat of Argentina makes any letter bread than the hard wheat of the preat northwest of this country. But it $an be pat down in the European marcets for less than the wheat of Minnesota, and that is what mainly accounts lor the Increase in this trade Of oourse he McKinley tariff and the differential iuty on German sugar hare been by no neons calculated to promote friendly xmimercial relations between the Unibid States and Germany, and the stupid destruction to the repeal of this duty by a partisan minority in the senate is likely ;o cost muoh to the trade of this connary. But the main fact remains that the Argentine wheat could be delivered in 3 am burg on better terms than the irheat of Minnesota. Besides this, Gernau merchants found in Argentina nore favorable markets for many of heir wares than in the United States. The upshot of the business is that in nternatioual trade, as well as in other arade, people will not bay where they lannot soli. Under the protectionist polcy of selling as mnoh as possible to foreigners, and buying from them as little ks possible, commerce must languish, trade seeks the lines of least resistance, ind when people oannot obtain their tupplies and dispose of their wares adrantageonsly in one quarter they will jo to another. When the Germans found heir trade with this countary further obttructed by the McKinley tariff, they ■eaobed to Argentina for their bread (applies^ There is no question that great levelopment of the Argentinian wheatield is due to the stupid tariff policy of his country more than to all other sanses.—Philadelphia Record. Had Koouth of Puduywd Elections. Recent news from New York inditates that McKinley has strong backing n his campaign for the Republican ^residential nomination. The protected nanufacturers are said to have made up k fund of fSOO,000 to secure New York's lelegation to the national convention in lis favor. The protected manufacturers lave a lively recollection and a high ippreciation of past favors. They can veil afford to pay this sum many times ever for the privilege of writing tariff tohednieswith a president in the White louse who will sign them. The tariff >arons have vast influence with the Remblican party and can make a stiff fight or their favorite. But McKinley should wwareof their hacking. The people vill have to pass on the nominations, ind they have had more than enough of rarebased elections and government by ariff beneficiaries. There is political leath in the “slush fund" pot.—-St jonis Post-Dispatch.
Cannot Dodge the lama. The Republican organs in commentng on the demise of the Fifty-third »ougress indulge the illusion that their >arty will be able to stave off monetary egislation until after the eleotion of a lew congress. This is an issue that oaniot be dodged or postponed. The Fiftyourth eongress was not elected to play tide and seek in politics and legislation, [t will be obliged to face the music, whatever may be the party conse[uences. The Democratic organisation if the house just adjourned made an tffort at least to legislate in behalf of iQtmd currency, and the Republican najority in the next house can do no ess. To attempt to retreat from the ssue would be an unpardonable act of nlitioal cowardice.—Philadelphia Record. Waste McKi nley and Protection. The Buffalo Express (Rep.) says it irefers McKinley as a leader in the ampaign for the presidency next year teoause “he is the peculiar representaive of the great protective policy, rhioh must be the leading issue."
