The Democrat would urge upon the democratic party the necessity of nominating a strong tieket at the convention tomorrow. It behooves each and every voter in the county to ‘see that it is,done. For county commissioners none but firstclass men ot ability and economical business methods should be nominated. The position of a county commissioner is a peculiar one. They come In contact with 6hrewd workers for corporations, who are sleek taikers, and who push contrasts whether or no. Ttte bounty commissioner has to detll with the slickest of traveling men aud this is why men of the' strictest integrity should be nominated tomorrow. The county commissioner is the most important officer of tho county, as on him falls ihc management of »hc finahces, the buying aud selling and the allowing of claims presented for payment. He is the sole guardian. Thus you see the importance of nominating the right kind of business men. Further, every man nominated tomorrow should be a “hustler” and a man who can command the votes of the people regardless of past party affiliations, Fibe county is, politically speaking, very close, with no votes to spare. Let every man nominated be such that he can carry more than his party strength, and when that is done the democrats will have a splendid ticket lor victorv and reform, which i6 so much desired at the present time by the taxpayers of the county. Be prudent in the selection of the candidates. |V y ■_

This is just such a tax as The People want imposed on the corporations and money-hoarders More legislation of the same kind is What the country needs. b • ■; _v.__ . . As between the pops, republicans, prohis and democrats there was a very decent and well-behaved crowd at Winslow last Saturday. Pension Agent Spencer at Indianapolis since he entered office has been very prompt in the payment of the old soldiers, and they appreciate his efforts in their behalf. The Democratic State convention was held at Indianapolis Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The Democrat of next week will give a full account of the meeting as it will also of the countv convention. But one allowance has been made on the new jail for extra work so far since the work commenced and that ainouuts to $223. That is the first ‘ttem so far in the construction of the structure and the work has ouly begun on the building. w" f— That staunch republican paper, the Evansville Standard, has flopped from that party and will hereafter be found in the independent field, liepublicanisnr to it was an old chesnut. Kolb, tlie rlepublican-populist candidate lor governor of Alabama, has raised a cry elf “fraud.” Kolb was snowed under by a majority of 40,000 but now says 1 hat he will be sworn in as governor of the State. The House] Monday afternoon passed separate bills placing iron, coal, barbed wire and sugar on the free list. These bills were immediately sent to the Senate lor their final passage. Democrats all over the country are iu hi«h feather and it will now be seen where the traitors in the Senate will stand upon these important measures of relief to The People. ' The Senate tariff bill passed through the House Monday afternoon after an unusual bitter fight had been made to hold o tto the Wilson tariff measure. The House will now pass free sugar, tree coal and free iron bills and at once send them to the Senate for immediate action. There seems to be some doubt as to whether the president will sign the Senate tariff bill.
Pullman has commenced to evict the seven thousand people occupying his houses at; Pullman. Business in every commercial center ot the United States shows a great improvement in the last tew weeks. And now that the tariff legislation has been practicalfy agreed upon business will rapidly resume in ail branches. During the past few weeks many wise laws have been passed by congress which will have a tendency to push things and give the business world confidence that the present administration is doing Its best for Ihe People regardless of the two or three men in the senate, who were elected to serve the best Interest of the citizens of the United States, but are traitors to the cause of true tariff reform. Suoh men will see the day that all measures opposed by them will pass the Senate, and more thau probable at this session ot congress. Among these renegades who were elected may be counted a tew democrats and a few populists. Down with such men and up with meu of modern ideas and who will not be buncoed iuto affiliating with combinations and trusts. But the business world will go on just the same as if nothing had happened. Now for a push to the front. ^ . "Vi .
