CALL THE ROLL. The senatorial highwaymen are hearing from the people in a way that must trouble them. It is no easy task to play a Confidence game such as that ttie “conservative” combine have undertaken without raising a whirlwind. Even in the home of Mr. Gorman the storm of disapproval is swelling fast to the fury of a cyclone. Maryland democrats as a rule are of a sturdy, old-fashioned type and entertain strong convictions regarding the great foundation principles of their party, Democrats of this kind do not barter their democracy to secure protection for a few tariff barons and trust lords. Hence Maryland's senior senator and his pliant colleague are not going to have the chance of assisting in such a betrayal of trust without paving the price ot their treachery. So in Ohio also. Mr. Brice is not beyond the reach of the people. The democracy of Ohio may for a time he balked and hindered m tlie effort to voice its condemnation, but the day of reckoning cannot be put off lorcver. In the fullness of time there will come such a declaration from the democrats of Ohio as will make it plain enough to tlie world that there, as in every other state of the Union, democratic opinion holds.with President Cleveland that the senate amendments to the Wilson bill mean nothing else than party perfidy and party dishonor. So also with every other senator who was a party to the mutilation of the house bill. N>» pretense that they were acting for the local interests of their states will avail. The people ot the states are giving the He to these excuses and stripping the ctfnserva* tives of all disguise. Excepting in the case of two senators from Louisiana, no considerable number of peo*
pie in any state are in accord with the shameful work that was done after the tariff bill reached the senate. The amend incuts exacted by Mr. Gorman and his associates in the “conservative” combine were wholly and only for,the furl beta nee of private interests. The endeavor to make it seem otherwise has happily tailed. This encourages the democrat.* of the house to stand firm in their determination to defeat the senatorial conspiracy. The country is with them for onjjii* issue many republicans any good democrats, and there is universal hope Unit the little cabal of senators who have forced the democratic majority of the senate into so em harassing a position may vet he compelled to come into the open and let their votes go on record upon every undemocratic amendment. Surely (here is no obligation of honor which can force such democrats as Senators Vest and Jones, who are known everywhere as earnest and devoted friends of tariff reform, to shield the “conservatives” from public view. The compromises by which the bill was got out of the senate were wi-e and proper, because they were the necessities of the situation. Now that the bill has gone through the senate it is in a different situation. Let. there be an open vote on sugar, and coal, and iron, if there is a way to get it. Good democrats wan’ to know absolutely where every senator stands, and nothing can give that knowledge authoritatively except a vote in open session of the senate. Call the roll.—St. Louis Republic.

Don’t forget the convention, Saturday, August 18th. Without division the senate passed the bill introduced and pushed through the house by Representative Cooper., of Indiana, for the taxation of greenbacks. The measure is regarded as one of the most important financial bills of the present session, as it is designed to equalize the laxatian on all currency instead of leaving gold and stiver to bear the entire burden. The bill has come to be called the ‘'Cooper bill.’’ The New Mexico and Arizona admission bills were reported to the senate last week. In the case of New Mexico a constitutional convention is provided for, the delegates to which are to be chosen at an election to bn held on the second Tuesday in June, 1895, and the convention is to meet on the second Tuesday the followiug Juiv. Iu case they adopt a constitution it is to be submitted to the people for ratification at an election to be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, 1895. The time of residence necessary to become a voter is fixed at six mouths Instead of sixty days, as in the house bill. Arizona has already adopted a "constitution and the bill in her case provides for admission on the 1st of August, 1895. and the election of delegates to the Fiftv-fourth congress.
