Hickory Scale®, of Winslow, was in the city last .week. He was at one time sheriff of this county, and elected bv the largest majority given a candidate in any election in the county. The* General Baptist church at White Oak, Marion' township, was consumed by fire last Sunday night. Loss about $500. The cause is not known, but supposed to be from a defective flue. A public Missionary meeting will be given by*the ladies of the C. P. church ljext Sunday evening at the usual hour for service. All are invite!. Special music will be.prepared for the mating. The residence of John Thurman, of Arthur, was burned last Friday night. Only a small .portion of the household goods were saved. Loss, $500. Insured for $300 in the Pike county insurance company. W. H. Scales, postmaster at Angus ta, was in the city last Friday and made The Democrat office a call. From the position he now occupies it is a safe matter to say that he is a democrat and a hustler. The beautiful sunshining weather of the past few days has encouraged the small boy to resurrect his tops and marbles, and now you can see them on every comer—where it is dry —“plugging tops” and “playing for keeps”. But boys will be boys. I. M. GUadist^ who has for some years been employed at the insane hospital at Evansville, was in cbecity Saturday. He left Monday for Holton, Kansas, where he will superintend the farm department of the Pattowatomie |ndian schools. The appointment is a splendid one as Mr. Grladish is an experienced farmer. A few of them are of a rich brown color, but the majority ary spotted hrowu and white.” The Supreme1 court has advanced the Indiana tax cases, which involve the constitutionality of the law of 1801, tar8 hearing on March 26th. Three railroads!—the Pittsburg, Cincinnati & St. Louis, the Indianapolis and Vincennes, and the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis— are the appellagts against the State Treasurer.
