The great disaster at .Louisville last Friday during the heavy wiud storm in which the new bridge which is being built between Jeffersonville and that city, was one of the most disastrous that has occurred in that section for many years. About twenty were killed aud a large number terribly wounded. After a hard struggle, a tariff reform is directly before us. Nothing so important claims our attention, and nothing so clearly presents itself, as both an opportunity and a duty— an opportunity to deserve the grali tude of our fellow-citizens and a duty imposed upon us by our oft-repeated professions and by the mandates ot the people.—From President Cleveland's message." From a political standpoint these are the kind of times our republican friends like. They are very greedy about the matter too, aud would consider it an insult if some good democrat would lay the blame on his party for unwise legislation. They recognize the fact that the same laws ex ist that were enacted by a republican congress, and that the- present hard times grew out of said legislation. Chappell, Minder, Nebraska. He will be remembered as a former resident ot Jefferson township, but for a number of years a resident of the above named city where he is now serving Uncle Sam in the capacity of postmaster, having been appointed in August last. And by the way he is a tariff reformer from way back. Success.

The January Harper’s Magazine, which will appear on the 22d inst., will count among its attractive features the first part of Mr. George du Mauner's novel, “Trilby,” with his own illustrations; the concluding oaper describing and illustrating Mr. Edwin Lord Weeks’s journey across Persia by Catalan; “The West and East Ends of London,” by Richard Harding Davis; a short story of New York lite, by Mr. Brander Matthews; and a tale of the Wild West, by Mr. Owen Wister, called “Balaan and Pedro.” The hero of the last-named sketch is a spirited Wyoming horse with a cruel master.
