But the newspaper itself must have backing. It must have substantial support and this support, should come from the people who are benefited by the efforts of the newspaper. Every business in town should be represented in the advertising columns pf the paper. It should be remembered that the outsiders do not confine themselves to merely reading the editorials and locals, but more particularly look at the adrertisiug columns to satisfy themselves of the amount of business done. They do uot credit the town with branches of business they do not see advertised. The editor “hits the nail on the head.” The street hawker or traveling peddler generally gets a price and a half for his goods in every instance. And yet the people are susceptible of being gulled two or three times before they are aware of the tact. The last grand jury indicted a number of young men, white and colored, for engaging in “crap shooting.” Besides these boys there were some older men who were also brought into court for playing a game called “poker” for a money consideration. The young men should profit by the lesson just taught them and let “de bones” alone as it may lead them on and on until they are again before his honor, when the fines will grow heavier, aud with prbaobly a jail sentence.
