Mrs. James Brock of Velpen. died last Friday morning of typhoid fever, aged twenty-four years. She was the daughter of Dr. Broadwell„who With her husband and one child survive her. G. W. G. Ferris, who designed the great Ferris wheel at the world’s fair, has other schemes in view, one of which is simply to make Chicago a seaport. He says that it will be done in a few years, but refuses particulars, while intimating that it is to be through a revolution in the making of canal locks, apparently by the use of compressed air to raise and lower vessels passing through. We should like to see that scheme materialize. It would be a great thing for Chicago and for the great Northwest a« well. In this age ot progress few things are impossible,

The stock-holders of the Evansville & Terre Haute Railway held their annual meeting at Evansville last Monday and elected for directors, D. J. Mackey, F. W. Cook and E. P. Huston o' that city, and Harvey E. Fisk, Frederick ftosevelt, John L. Lampson, II. M. Tilford, T. H. Wheeler and W. H. Curtis of New York. Most of the stock was voted by Mr. Tilford who is a friend to Mr. Mackey. The officers of the road will be elected at a meeting held in New York. • The. date of which has not beeu given. A very serious accident occured at the Blackburn mines two miles uorih of this place last Saturday morning In which two men were badly injured. John Eberly and John Willy had prepared to tire a shot in the new slope they were making, but the shot failed to fife. On examination it was found that the powder was wet on top, so they began to drill out; after drilling a little it seems the drill must have struck a spark from the shute and the explosion occured. Willy was badly burned and bruised about the body and has a compound fracture of the foot which will probably have to bfc amputated. Eberly was burned about the face and body, both wi*l be laid up for some lime. Drs. Byers and: Link attended Mr. Willy and Dr Hunter attended Mr Eberly.

The home of James Arnold, of Dutch Town was the scene of a jolly company of young people last Monday evening, who eamo in to offer congratulations to Jeff, Mr. Arnolds oldest son who on that day attained bis maionty. All the girls had baked a flue cake or prepared some other equally choice delicacy. The company numbered about fifty and all agreed that the attbir was a most pleasautone.
What kiud of times do we expect to have in Petersburg the coining season ? With the juice of grain that our market otters many farmers are taking their surplus to other towns and selling—some go out side of the county, thus helping to advance* business away from home. This shoqld not he, Petersburg markets should come even with the neighboring markets. If our farmers sell their grain away thev buy their goods away and thus business at home is dull. The question is worth considering if w< want tome prosperity. Charlie Chappell, a young man sixteen. years of age, who* is making his home with uncle Dick Gladish, two-and-one-haif miles southwest of town, met with a serious accident last Monday while coon hunting. At tour o’clock in the morning youug Chappell started from home and at eight o’clock he was discovered on the ground under a tree unconscious, by his side lay his ax and hroken lantern also a dead coon. Dr. Basinger was summoned and the best medical attention given. Up to this writing the sufferer has not fully recovered consciousness and is unable to give ar. explanation. It is thought probable that he climbed the tree in order to take ’the coon and losing his balance fell, as the bruise on the head indicates a lal) of considerable disr tauee.
