One night last week thieves broke into the store of Louis Beck, at Rumble, Pike county and stole a barrel of sugar and about 200 pounds o( bacon. The barrel was carried a few rods from the store and the sugar emptied into sacks and carried away.—Oakland City Record. The road bed of the Augusta branch is ready for the iron. The work of laying the track will be commenced in a few days. Trains will be ready to ruu within the next two months. Albert Battles, one of the prosperous young farmers living south of the city concluded that he could not get along without the best local newspaper in Pike county and accordingly subscribed for The Democrat. We have room for a few more ou our subscription book. The manual of the county schools is now in the pressof The Democrat. It will be an unusually interesting pamphlet for the use of the school officers, teachers and patrons of schools. Supt. Blaize is working bard and his fjyst work will show that he intends to have the teachers of the county get down to busiuess.

Durdy, representing the A. N. Kellogg newspaper union, St, Louis', was in the city last Saturday and made The Democrat office a very pleasant call. Martin, as they want to make arrangements with the railroad as to the number of cars. The fare tor the round trip is $2 75 good from the 4th to the 16th of September. A Missouri editor says he has a subsrciber who gets drunk every little while and insists ou paving a year’s subscription. He now has his paper paid up to 1926. We wish the editor of the paper would find out what brand of whiskey the fellow drinks and send ns a few gallons. We will pay him a good price for it, and if it proves to be what he says,
vv c nui iaac a uauci. William Highfield, the seeoift one of the white cappers tried at Jasper was acquitted of the charge last Saturday. The other defendants will be tried as soon as a jury can be secured. Brown, the first defendant tried and found guilty and sentenced to two years in the penitentiary, has not as yet been recaptured since his escape. The bonds in which he was held hare beeu forfeited in both cases. The bouds were in the sum of $500 each. John Robinson’s great and only big consolidated shows pitched rents here last Tuesday. It is certainly the rankest big show that is traveling this season. The parade was very ordinary, wliilo the menagerie was very stale and the circus was of the “yellow” variety. It is supposed .that the show divided up before reachltte this city. The people were badly disappointed at the parade and many returned home without witnessing the performance, but as it was the show was well palrouized.
Charles Lett and family visited the family of Ellen Eby in Warrick county last week. John Smiser was fined $2.00 and costs for assault on Thoma3 King by Squire Chappell on^Honday last. One of the horses driven by the Princeton base ball club, dropped dead near the Patoka river while they were returning home last Friday night. Rev. I. N. Yokley returned from Tennessee last Thursday where he had been visiting his parents for several week. Mrs. Yokley will remain several weeks. The fire went out before any damage was done, and the citizens are now looking for the vould-be fire bug.—Oakland Citg Journal. A. R. Snyder left at this office this week some very old newspapers. One of these is the Ulster county Gazette containing a full account of George Washington’s death. It is a very quaint looking newspaper. The others are the New York Herald and the National Volunteer, papers published during the civil war. He prizes them very highly as relics.

Foreign taleut of ability will furnish their presensc and aid in instructing the teachers in many points of importance, which, together with the other exercises that always go in with the art of school teaching, will make the institute interesting. W. H. Scales was appointed postmaster at Augusta last Friday, vice Jesse Agee, removed. Mr. Scales will take charge of his postoffice just as soon as his commission arrives which will be during the next three weeks. This ju.-t about finishes up the fourth class offices in Pike county and Congressman Taylor will now attend to the Petersburg postoffice, although The Democrat Is not officially ratified of the fact. Midnight marauders have made visits to the bouse of Jonathan Lbveless, of Logan township on twe occasions during the past month. It is supposed that the folks were chloroformed.
