Otwcll is situated about teu miles east of Petersburg in Jeflerson township, and is but one-half mile from the Dubois county line. It is without railroad or stream and purely an inland village, but not entirely cut off frdm the outside world, having a daily mail, aud the citizens are enabled to read the daily papers the same day published. The citizens are active and hustiiug, although being few in number. The only brick buildings in the town are those of Beadles & McCormick, the flouring mill and an elegant school building. The town is not closely built up and one not knowing the circumstances would call it “string town,” being stretched out along the main street of the town. The town is well shaded, beautiful shade trees lining the streets. It is one among the old towns of the county, and being situated as it is does a large trade among the people of that section of the county. The stores arc very well stocked for a village of its size, and the proprietors report business to be very good considering the stringency of the times. The town has been visited by numerous fires at different times, but always comes to the front with another building. The fires are nearly all ot incendiary N'igin, so that those building do not go to much expense in erecting fine business rooms or residences. The perpetrators have never been found out, aud* probably uever. will be. The editor of The Democrat on last Friday made a pleasaut trip to -Otwell and also made the acquaintance of a number of the citizens through the courtesy of postmaster Bai'tl and John Braden to whom we desire to return thanks. In looking over the little village we found it to contain a substantial brick school house where 'the young idea are taught their a b c’s and the older pupils the higher branches of study. The trustee of that township,Dr. Harris, provides the school with an excellent corps of teachers, who are capable of instructing the children for a higher course in college. There is but one church in the city, that being tile M. E. denomination. They have a very comfortable frame church building aud a frame parsonage on the east of it. The church is iu charge of Rev. J. The flouring mill of Jesse Cliajllg & Sou, is one among the best in the county. It is a three-story brick structure and the machinery of the very latest style aud pattern. I The farmers of Pike county will do well to hold their wheat for better pi ices. At the present time the mar- [ ket in Petersburg is away down, much lower than it should be, from the fact that foreign markets should enable, grain dealers to pay better prices, j The crop reports from all over the country and published in the dailypapers from day to day show that the corn crop will be very short on account of the severe hot weather. Many of |the states are suffering from the drought. The wheat crop has been light in the northwest, and the coin crop will reach a one-half crop. Tbertris a possibility of wheat reaching 70 or 75 cents by the first of January. Any grain dealer will tell voti that the prices of grain will advance ! owing fo the shortage of the crops.
