Town Dude Desires to Blow off a Little Peat Up Steam. His Subjects Numerous ard Some of Them Quite Tn^e. promises to Donate Contribution* on Various Thinps^it Various Tiiu«s. It He Uits Ton From Time to Time Take Tour JloUclne. Iii introducing myself to the readers of The Democrat I do 60 with
extreme modesty and promise to only indulge in a con t ri but ion semi-occasionally and hence to begin with I will try your patience this week with one of my very heavy articles. As you all know, I am very polished, and quite
a dude for that matter,' Borne say that I am the duda of Petersburg. Be that as it may I wear good clothes— a: my paw pa’s expeuse. Now at times we may tread heavy or our steps may be light, but from the prominent perch we occupy, may be able to catch up many a trifle and weave them into fancies that will set the boys to fighting their shadows and set some to thiuking. A chronic loafer said to me last evening: “I would like to see some copper alrrest me for standing on the street corner.” “So would everybody,” said I. He looked around sharply at my sudden and vehement acquiescence and replied: “Excuse me, I merely coincided with your views expressed, as I do not want to get into trouble.” “But,” I continued, “you are in error as to the law. You have no license to stand on street cor-' tiers. An officer of the municipality may order you to ‘move on’ and your failure to comply is an infraction of the law and you therefore become amenable to the law and may be arrested and fined. If you would not pay the penalty be a man and go about your busiuess and spuru a loafer aud despise his abominable ways.” I used to be quite a sport and liked a quiet game of base ball ou Sunday. I see that the boys have not given up the sport vet, but should do so. _ I remember a few years ago that, we had quit'e a lively game here with a visiting club on Sunday, and we wound it up in a free fight. Some of the dudes have joined me and we are uow above playing the national Sport ou Sunday. I just mention this for the benefit of those who are not in the habit of visiting the base bail park on Sundays. There seems to be a serious misunderstanding between several parties in this city at the present date. I hope the matter may be amicably settled within the next several mouths. These small misunderstandings sometimes create a great deal of trouble in the camp, and for tho benefit of all parties concerned the matter Simula be dropped.
The “white” house is no more. The courts have so decreed aud the mistress has trone to Washington, Daviess county. The madam could not staud the heavy fines imposed by the court and juries. .Possibly it is, a good riddance. True it is that one-half the world does not know how the other half lives. Petersburg is not an immoral city, but there isf enough crookedness going on to Bhock the better element of society if it were known. None of us who are not in the circle of coarse festivity aud forbidden pleasures can comprehend, how much of it is in progress. The weaknesses man’s flesh is heir to are many and amid the glitter and glare of those adornments which money provides foi^.the establishment of thtf retreats of the wicked, the strongest wills are broken. Meu find themselves hopelessly ensnared in the meshes their owu appetites have woven for them- Once fully
initiated into the life of a sport, one seldom turns back to a life of righteousness aud purity. That very vulgar sheet, the Sunday Sun, has not been seen to any great extent during the past fear weeks, and us dudes feel somewhat easier. Of course we were not afraid of being uwrit up/' bnt then my chums weee always on the anxious seat. There appeared at times in that paper slurs on some of my most intimate friends that were not ‘‘all wool and a yard wide/' ami could they hare fonrid out who the writer was, would have given him a sound drubbing. I understood the other day that the authorities were lookiug into the matter. That is right. I reckon that some of us boys had a splendid time on the fourth. That is, some of tis. Now the knowing ones all know that Petersburg has a few boys who are regular heartsmashers, but then I will not give the case away which came uuder my observation on that day. if I am not suspieioned too strongly I may write again on the topics of the day and give my observations from a point on Main street which 1 will not not now locate. But the reader must not look for anything | sensational about my writings, for that is not my style of doing business. Until then I remain yours. Town- Dude. Notice of Bis. olution. The firm of Patterson, Penny & Oo. has been dissolved by mutual consent, It. S. Penny retiring. The new firm will be styled Patterson & Alexander. We hope you will extend your patronage in the future as in the past to the new firm. Those indebted to tho old firm will please call and settle up. Patterson, Penny & Co. Having bought out the interest of Mr. It. S. Penny in the hardware and implement business in Petersburg we hope by fair dealing with all to merit the large trade of the old firm in the future. Hoping that you may call when in need of anything in outline of business we remain Yours to Please, Patterson & Alexander. Petersburg, Ind. July 7, 1893.
Circus Day. Friday, July 21, is circus day. The LaPearl show has been exhibiting iu towns north and west of us nearly all seasou. Papers containing tlattering notices of the show come to us each week and we are satisfied that this year LA Pearl’s circus will give 11s as much for 10 aud 20 cents as cither shows give for 50 cents. So if you want to see a good show come to La Pearl’s, Friday July 21. La Grippe. During the prevalance of the grippe the past seasons it was a noticable fact that those who depended upon Dr. King’s New Discovery, not only had a speedy recovery, but escaped all the troublesome after effects of the malady. This remedy seems not only in all cases of la grippe, but in all diseases of throat, chest and lungs and has cured cases of asthma and hay fever of long standing. Try it aud be convinced. It won’t disappoint. Free trial bottles at J. K. Adams & son’s drug store. Obituary. Elizabeth Fowler was bom December 13th, 1855; died July 8,1883; aged 4T years, 6 months and 25 days.
