Bergen, Oliphant & Co. 34* Instead of using the scraper on the streets early in the spring and leveling up and filling in all chucks, the street commissioner by order of the higher authorities is hauling on extra dirt and in some instances where dirt was removed a few years ago. Such is life. In another column of this issue will be found the auditor’s annual report of the finances of Pike county. The cash balance in the treasury on the first daf“pf June was something over $19,000. several thousand less than a few years ago. The county is in a fairly good condition, financially, the county debt beiug something like $30,000. The fake picture enlargers are very busy in Indiana cities and towns just no\fr. One of their devices is to get a little advauce to pay for the material ; another is to charge nothing for the picture and make it up in getting four prices for frames. They have otherslick ways of doing the unwary. The safe way is to let them severely alone and have needed work houestly done at home. Business, like people, like factories, lice cash, is all brought to a town by' advertising the reasons it should come. That town that sits down and waits for business to come is like the merchnat who is traveling on to get the crumbs that fall from the business of others who have gone out and brought business to the town and to their own stores. The inerchau| who does not help to bring trade and) business to a town, does uot deserve the trade of that town, for the merchant who is a sap-sucker and adds no force or vitality to the general good, is a hindrance gnd not a'fielp to the town. Thk Democrat never tires of telling of the advantages to be bad by trading in Petersburg; the traders should do their share. Probably few men with a full knowledge of all the conditions would engage in farming with expectation of making a fortune at the business says the Rural\Yorker. Yet, if fortunes from farming are the exception, absolute failures in it are probably fewer in number than in almost any other calling. It is said that 95 per cent of city business men

tail in business, sooner or later. Besides these, many others eke out a precarious, hand-to-mouth existence, apparently never know '“where they arc at.” Docs the agricultural class make any such miserable showing as this? If farrfting isu’t all that might be desired, isn’t it more ot a certainty than figures would indictae some other vocation to be? Isn’t there, too less wear and tear on the nervous organization, more solid comfort, less sham, more real enjoyment than in many other callings in life? In short, all things considered, .isn’t the farm life preferable to t^il others ? - w Children Cry for Pitcher’s Castoria.

The Eiicaiupmtut. The national eiiearapment G. A. R wilt meet at Indianapolis, September 4th, and close on the 9th, 1893. This was its birth place twenty-seven years ago. It now bids fair for one of the greatest meetings the soldiers ever enjpyed, and perhaps the last time our statdw ill have the honor and pleasure of saiaassemblv. Those olf us acquainted with Indianapolis during the war will be surprised at its growth, its imputation being three times the number it was during the war. It is near the center of the membership of the G. A. E; threefourths of the surviving Union soldiers live within a radius ot five hundred miles of it. We believe this will be the grandest meeting of the hind ever held in the state. Great pains are and will be ta ken to make it a success. The nights will be engaged in something of interest, such as the reception of veterans, electrical illumination, fire-works, street demonstrations, display of natural gas, also a gusher or burning gas well filling the air with its roar. Let us all go that can and meet for the last time in this camp, for the time draws nigh when we will hear the last bugle call, when we will be discharged from this toiling, imperfect warfare to join that all perfect blessed peace in endless felicity.
