Fof many years he has been engaged In the furniture and undertaking trade in this city, and was known throughout the county for his genial manner and straight-forward business methods. lie was’esteemed by all who knew him and was not knowu to have made an pnemy during all his business career in the city. He had been ailing for several years and for the last several mouths has been incapacitated lor business,, which necessarily compelled him to 6ell his furniture store sometime ago. Some two or three weeks ago he had so far recovered as to bo able to ride about the city, but his recovery was of short duration and ho suffered a relapse from which he succumbed on the date above given. Mr. Pinney was a prominent mem- . her of the I. O. O. F., F. & A. M. and O. E. S. lodges and of the G. A. It. Post, under which the funeral was conducted. He served in the late war, and his record as a soldier will always live to honor him who dared to go forth iu the defense of his country. The funeral services took place at the Presbyterian church, Suuday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Bain, and assisted by Revs. Yokley and Law. The funeral was the largest held in this city for many years. The procession to the cemetery being led by the city band, a member of which he bad been in former years. The floral offerings from friends of the deceased were beautiful, and expressed the friendship in which he was held by the citizens of Petersburg and vicinity. The citizens wit} miss Mr. Pinney from a business standpoint, as it had always been his aim to further the interests of the town in the way of improvements and manufactories, and in his way had done much for the future prosperity of the city. Again, we 6ay a good citizen has gone to his reward. e

NOT THIS TIME. Tlie Board of Commissioners Reject the Bids for a Sew Jail.. Will make Another Attempt at Re-celt-lug- Lower Bids (or tke New Building. The board of county commissioners met at the auditor’s office in ibis city last Thursday for the purpose of opening the bids for the erection and construction of a new jail and sheriff’s residence. There werqfour bids tiled with the auditor for the contract each of which was accompanied with a bond for the faithful compliance of the contract should it be let to the bidder. Before proceeding to the work of opening the bids a number of remonstrances were presented to the board of commissioners against the>buildipg of the jail. These remonstrances were presented by 11. J. Wiggs who had been selected for that purpose. Mr, Wiggs presented the objections of the petitioners as did John LI. McConnell. After looking over the remonstrances for a minute the commissioners decided to open the bids, which were as follows: Champion Iron Works. Canton. O— $ 2S,ftits Pauly J nil Works, St. Louis, Mo. . . 28,252 T. J. Morse, Indianapolis . . 2i\740 Jacob Bippus, Evansville.“ 27,333
At the conclusion 01 me opening u; the bids commissioner Carlisle moved that all the bids be rejected, giving as his opinion that the bids were excessive. The. motion was seconded by Commissioner Deartng. The representatives of the bidders were present and anxious to enlighten the board on their various plans of construction ami materials, but the abrupt termination affairs had taken gave them no chance to explain their view. The commissioners ordered the architect to make a few changes in the plans and specifications, and will give the jail builders another whirl on July 13th, when the board will receive bids for the new jail and sherifl’s residence. The petitions presented .Jo the board bf commissioners contained the names of 1016 residents of the county and as the gentlemen claimed who made the arguments, that they were unsolicited, but signed the petitions of their own volition. Those who are acquainted with jail building claim that the bids were verv reasonable for thevwork and materials asked for, be that as it may the commissioners did not see it in that light, and are after a jail more to their liking and which they have given thorough investigation. The auditor was instructed to give notice to contractors and builders bynotice and-letter that bids would be received up to noon of July 13th, 1893, for the construction and erection of a jail in Petersburg. ,

These rules will be applied iu case cholera comes. The general heal'h in the state is above: the average at present. Will Dennison was arrested last Saturday morning by ^ex-Marshal Smith on a charge of burglary at Terre Haute. The sheriff arrived Saturday afternoon and took the prisoner back with him. The young man has served a term in the penitentiary, having been sent from this county sometime ago. There is a section of law on the statute books of Indiana that requires ail practicing physiciaus to report all births and deaths to the secretary of the county board of health. This section of the law has so far been disregarded, and physicians are liable for not reporting such cases. W. E. McEIderry, who has been representing the Pike county hedge fence company, has engaged in the nursery traue. Farmers and all others desiring trpes, vines or plants should not fail to see him, as he guarantees all goods sold to be true to name. 2-2 The residence of Robert Lee at Winslow, burned on last Thursday morning.
