Entered at the postofflee In Petersburg toi» transmission through tUe mails as »e<?ouuclaas matter. FRIDAY, MAY 5,1893. The olectrac lights will have to be changed so as to place a lightr at Ike new councilman’s corner, unless thefe is one there ;iow. The others all have them. The people don’t care 1‘oT light anyhow. The salaries will be rafted and another twenty per cent added to the taxes in the town of Petersburg at the time of making the next rate of taxation. Bear this in mind. All these little scores must be paid up. j_lj_a Thje world’s ‘air was opened up ^Monday with appropriate ceremonies. The presideut, cabinet and other prominent men of the United States took a prominent part). The machinery was set in motion by President Cleveland, andthefair is on. The new council will wade right in and build uew sidewalks,'sewers and put she town in tip top shape. Just keep your tother eye open and watch ’em. Of course there is a little more grading and tilling to do, but what matters that so long as uew sidewalks are needed. Hon E. W. Fickhardt. editor of ihe Huntingburg Areir<s, has been appointed one of the directors of the prison south. AVe congratulate Mr. Fickhardt and all other editors who are so lucky as to secure recognition lor services rendered. Some get em and some don’t.
Secretary Carlisle has read the riot act to Wall street. It is needless jo say that so long as Carlisle is secretary of* the treasury Wall Street Will not dictate as to the financial policy of the country. For once in the history of the government the money grabbers of Wall Street have met their match. _ a».. If the editors ot the Press had had another chance of showing up and bringing into dispute the citizenship of Colonel Oliphaut, they would have certainly brought about his defeat, but as the returns show he received two majority. When the editors of the Press express an opinion the people sometimes take them at their word. Selah. The electiou passed off quietly without a rtpple to mar the pleasure and dignity of the strata of Indiana. But very little interest was taken in the election except as to the office of treasurer, which was very hotly contested by the friends of U. J. Nichols and W. A. Oliphant, the latterbejng elected by two votes. , Otherwise party lines were 'drawn pretty closely by the g. o. p. * ; The town election is now over and all are now aetting down to work once more. There will be more method in the proceedings and work of the council during the coming year. For one thing it may be expected that no more curbstone and street corner contracts will go. Men who do business for the people should let contract work to the lowest responsible bidder, and not to some pet. This is only given as a little advice to the new council. . _— u. Those gentlemen tn Washington Who so deftly wield the Ax. .* Would please the great majority By chopping off some Tax. These lines,; published anonymously in an esteemed Texas contemporary, accurately echo a sentiment that js running throughout the country with the sweep of a cyclone. But the poet has overlooked the fact.that the jixmen now in Washington are nbt the appointed tax-choppers. Their business is to chop Ben llarrison’S tax-eaters. The tax-choppers will have the platform when congress pieets, and they may be expected toj take off their coats and chop McKiu-| ley with great energy and perse ver-1 ance. They’ye got to do it, or run out of meat That is what they are there for. '•
THE WA T TO GET GOLD. The democratic party is opposed to a monometalic sold basis and in its national platform has made an emphatic declaration in fayor of bimetalism—of treating silver as good and honest money. But they are verv greatly mistaken who think that it is not possible to maintain gold payments without either begging or borrowing gold from the Plutocrats who are now throwing all their influence against the treasury in order to compel the maintenance ot a single gold standard aud to force the government to borrow their gold at interest in order to accommodate them in their demand for high interest rates on their private loans. The* gold basis can be maintained without either begging or borrowing a dollar from them. If it is to be done there is no need that the people should be either humiliated by begging from them or swindled by borrowing from them. An extra session of congress can be called itr*-a very short time and a still, shorter time will be required to pass a measure that will insure a perfect stream, of gold into the treasury ami remove all fear cn the part of our plutocratic friends that any;debt owed them will be paid in silver. An income of from five to ten per cent on all incomes over ten thousand dollars a year can be levied aud made payable in gold only. This will insure au abundance of gold ill the treasury, and will also give ample funds to meet the cousiant increase of expenditure for pensions. It will a|so allow a reduction ot the tariff to aistrictly revenue basis without the necessity of increasing the tax on whiskey.
11 1I1U silicic; eiauuuiu uu maintained, this its clearly the most just, sensible ami economical way to maintain it. It would be an outrage tb borrow gold for the people to pay interest on iu order to maintain the single gold standard when the plutocracy is benefited by it at the ex pense of the people. Common justice demands that the plutocrats who are itof be benefited shall bear the cost. Democrats understand very well the pressure to which Secretary Carlisle is subjected by the millionaires and gold speculators, and he will find all democrats ready to support him in carrying out a just and honest policy. lie need not. ask from these in-j soleut and dictatorial people a single! dollar either as a loan or as a favor. If he wants another hundred million in gold, or if he needs two hundred million or three hundred million to do what the plutocrats call “maintaining the public credit,” the democratic party and the democratic congress will see th at he gets it. Let him give these people to understand that it is inconsistent with- the dignity of the United States under democratic administration to beg from them or to accept favors' from them and that it is inconsistent with both law and justice to borrow from them to help them corner money a«*inst the people. He can rely on it that the democratic congress will give the treasury all the gold that can possibly be called for. Ten per cent, or even five per cent, on the incomes of such plutocrats as Andrew Carnegie and William Waldorf Astor (who lvas just settled in London to spend the money be draws from the labor ofj the American people) will give gold enough and to spare. Let Mr. Carlisle show the confidence he is entirled to teel from knowing that in carrying out a democratic policy he will have 7,000,000 democratic voters behind him, Let him go ou and when he needs help tor the treasury of the United State* apply, no forma pauperis to these insolent Massachusetts plutocrats but to the people of the United Slates, who, if their congress is called together in extra session, will vole as large a levy for gold as patriotism and a determination to maintain the public credit demands. Democrats will not go begging or borrowing tor the humiliation of thair country oivjor the robbery of its people. They can and they Will maintain the public credit, no matter howjlarge the percentage of the income tax they are obliged to levy. Let, no one in or out of Wall street teel the least uneasiness or the least distrust in the power of the demh

cralic party to keep the country on a gold basis, if that is deemed desirable. There is no problem about it. All that is required is a vote in cotigress, that can be had In a few weeks at furthest, and by the exercise of the sovereignty of sixty-five millions of people, organized as the Uuited States of America, gold will begiu to pour into the treasury ten times as fast as Wall street can draw it out by demanding gold in payment for warehouse receipts issued by the treasury on deposits of silver. Let Secretary Carlisle go on, confident that his party is able and willing to do all that the welfare of the people demands. r The hew Road Law. For the benefit of everybody interested in good roads we print the following road law passed by the last Indiana legislature : Provides that upon petitions of at least fifty voters in any township contiguous to each other, including thejreir. any incorporated town or city of less than 30,000 population, a vofe may be taken upon ttie cojj* si ruction of free gravel, stone c»r nflP eadamized roads at the next spring or fall elections, or at special elections cajled for the purpose.»T\yeuty days’ notice must be given in the newspa-i pers or by posting notices. If a majority of the votes are cast in favor of the buiiding of the road the county commissioners, shall proceed to the building, but not otherwise. The construction must be awarded to the lowest bidder, and the bidders shall file a bond in twice the suiu of their bids. For the raising of funds the commissioners shall issue the bonds Of the county for the full amount of the contract in, bonds of not less than $50 nor more than $500, payable in one, two, three, four and rive years, with interest at not more than G per cent.
