One of the great works accomplished by the town trustees was that of putting in a culvert near Frank & Hargrave’s elevator. The culvert is below low water mark and is not sufficient to carry*ofT the immense volume of water which must necessarily go through it. It is about eleven times too small. Water is backed up into the elevator during every heavy rain. The council should remedy this matter before they are compelled to back up a suit at law. « For the benefit of soinetof the small hoys of Petersburg we will say that the hunting and killing of the following birds in this state at any time, is punishable by a fine of live dollars: Robin, martin, whipoorwill, cuckoo, woodpecker, bluebird, swallow, catbird,, thrush, redbird. dove, goldfinch, lark, cherrvbird and yellowliird. Robbing their nests is also prohibited, You will uotlcq that English sparrows are not included in the above list and anyone who wishes to go a “gunning” for them should receive encouragement. English sparrows are the natural enemy ot all other birds aud should be annihilated.

While walking oast their camp southwest of town Wednesday evening a vicious dog belonging to the camp rushed at and bit him severely on the left leg. The gang should be prosecuted for harboring vicious dogs. Tuesday morning last a man might have been seen north of the electric light works with an elder pop-gun and plenty of paper in his pockets. Every once in a while there would be a terrible report and the game would fall all about hint, and to see him fill his game-sack was" wonderful to behold. He is a splendid shot, is Em Harrell, editor ot the Wdww. A valuable colt belonging to Isaac Lett, of Jefferson township, was stung to death by honey bees. Jast' Thursday. The colt got into the lot where there were several stands of bees and in some; juanner upset one of the hives, tlje bees then made war upon tho colt. The colt in attempting to get away endeavored to jump a picket fence and was caught by the pickets, and before assistance could be rendered was stung to death. The way to get factories at Petersburg is to organize and bid for them like other towns. People who embark in manufacturing enterprises want bonus and bonus makes the mare go in other places. The principal ot giving a man a start in business is not probably correct but as other towns have adopteiP'the system wp must keep step with the caravan or get left. We have had enough wind work and now lets have factories. The foundations for a large sized boom have been carefully laid now let ’er boom. * i Sunday last, Marshal „ Sam Smith took a quiet stroll along the railroad lor his health. When lo, and behold, there was a great commotion within a certain box car standing on the sidetrack. There were arms, legs, men and boys, colored and white, of all sizes and descriptions, flying through the air like so much chaff. It was only a little quiet game ^ttf “sebe* come leben.” There was a cool hundred—-cents wagered on the rcsult-of the throw, but when sortie fellow yelled that the marshal was in sight the air whistled through the boys’ hair as thev flew out of the reach of the tuiuiou of the law.

This will be an election in which democrats will take part- and a democrat elected.
John W. Arnold, living near Augusta, ;met with quite an accident last Monday while felling trees. lie had felled a large tree and after trimming it up set down on the butt qf the tree which still rested on the stump, when it rolled off in such a way as to throw him under it and breaking one of his legs. No one was near at the time and he began to dig the dirt away and from under the leg which was broken. lu this way he extricated himself. He was afterwards fohnd and taken to his home where medical aid was summoned and the injured member reduced. The town election is over and the result of the paper ballots are as follows, cednnients on the election beiug unneessary, but it is safe to say that the voters are in favor of high taxation and the extravagant uses to which the city funds are expended: Trustee, 2d Ward• Win.
