Everything was favorable fora large outpouring of lire gallant democracy of the county, >n,d along early in the morning wag)it alter wagon, carriage after carriage, and in every oilier way cauie die populace to attend the meeting. By eleven o’clock the streets of Winslow was one dense mass of moyiug humanity, and silently moving among this dense throng of people were to bp seen the various candidates, who were getting iu thoir last licks for the nomination. Townsend then spoke at some length of the work that is uow before the democrats at the coming election and that of (lie convention, in which he prevailed that harmony shoj.i'd pervade the ranks of democracy in order to win; that the defeated .candidates of the day, amt there would be some, should not sulk but put on the armor and go to work with a will and elect the ticket nominated. The speech was listened to attentively throughout and was heartily appreciated by tbo people, who frequently interrupted the speaker with applause. It was a grand effort. At the conclusion of ifr. Townsend’s address Chairman Eiv annouu.ced that the next thing in order would be the nomination of a candidate for representative. Tho names of Green B. Campbell, of Dockhart township, and Dr. David DeTar of l’atok/township, were presented to the convention, with the following
results; Campbell, 81 89-10. DeTar, 311-1U. Upon the chairman announcing the vote, Mr. Campbell made a motion that tiio nomination of Dr. DeTar be made unanimous. The mo tion carried. Tho nomination for treasurer of Owen Smith was made unanimous, there beiug no opposition. The chairman staled that the next nomination to be made was that of sheriff, and the names of Charles Uollon, of Jefferson township; Felix Miller, of Marion township; James F. Boss, of Monroe township, and Samuel II. Fcttinger, of I'atoka township were placed in nomination. Tho balloting for sheriff was very close throughont. The ticket is a good one (Void top tor bottom, and will elicit the sOppol-t of all democrats and conservative Voters, tt is composed .of men who hay« not been office hunters; men who arc upright ami honest; men who have the respect of their neighbors; men who are aiire to Iho interests of Pike comity and her people, and when elected anil take the the oath of ojSee will serve the people to the best of thejr ability. They are old residents j of the county, some of them having been b£rn in the county and they know the wants of the people. The best of feeling prevailed in the convention ami harmony prej faded with a big “H” The crowd &Sms very large being estimated at from 3,000 to 5,000 and was very em tliusfastic. The Petersburg and ON well bands furnished the music for the occasion. AH in all it was one of the best conventions ever held in the county,

DAVID DRT44, The candidate nominated lor reiu'eseutatiye, was borji in Warrick county in IIis lather removed to Tike comity in t)ie year 1852, and in which comity lint doctor lias since resided, lie received his pdupa lion in the district schools, and being very diligent he Seemed a good common school education. He pursued his studies until President Lincoln called lor troops, and he nt the age or fifteen, when but a mere boy, enlisted in the 24tb lrnl. tyegt. Yols. tinder Capt. Win. Merricks, ns a drummer hoy. He served three years and two moat J)s ns a faithful soldier always nt his post of duty. Upon receiving his discharge ho returned Inane and again entered the school room to finish his studies, and utter a two years’ course he commenced the study of medicine under the tutorship ot his father, ami ].i IsTjt) begun the practice of his chosen profession at Stendai, this county. He practiced there tor several years, and his health failing him he went west with the hope that the change of climate would lenetit him. In 1880 he went to Winslow, bis present home, and engaged at his profession. He Is looked upon as one of the best physicians in the county and has a' large and lucrative practice. The doctor is held in the highest esteem by all who know him, mid he is known by nil the citizens of Pike county. He is not an office-seeker, having never held an offiee In the enmity. SMITH, Who was renominated for treasurer by tlie convention by aeelainatiou, is one of the most popular men that has ever lieen elected to offiee in Pike county. Accommodating and courteous at nil times he has won the esteem ot the voters of Pike county not only the democrats, but of the republican, prohibition mid people’s party. lie is what might be termed a model officer in all respects. Mr. Smith was born in Washington township upon the farm ho now owns in 1850. Ilia grandfather was one or the.early pioneers of the county, having settled here iu iSll), when Pike county was nothing but a wilderness, and the red ijinn inhabited the forests. Mr. Smith never held office until elected two years ago to the position he now holds mid to which he was so unanimously renominated. •There is no question as to his re-election to tlui office for which he is nominated, lie has during his term of 1 ffice never failed to pay an order for the want of funds, and is the right man in the fight place.
CHARLES M. HOLLON, Wbo was nominated b.v the democrats for Sheriff was born in Pike county, ill 1SG1, and lias been a resident Of Jefferson township all Ids life. Helms never been a candidate for any county office, or liefore a convention for a nomination. He is a fanner and stock dealer and has been engaged in shipping stock for several years past, and during that time has paid out thousands or dollars to the farmers of l*ike county. Last year he engaged in the threshing business, and having made so pinny friends during the years past lie lias tfjc honor of having threshed more wheat than any man in Pike county, lie is a sel'-Mirde man. and has the qualifications “and experience in a business way to make Pike coiiuty a No. 1 sheriff. Hu is of a genial disposition and makes friends Wlieicver lie gops. The nominee on the ticket for recorder was I Mini in Warrick county in 1822, and is at Ibis time TO years old. He lias been a resident of Pike county ror forty-live years. |le has nevar held a county office, but has lielfl the offices of Justice-of-lhe-peace and assessor of his township. IIo was instrumental in having Monroe township divided, liuvlng got up the petition and presenting it to the hoard of commissioners. The new townsliipwas named Lockhart in honor of his father. He is a well eduo ited man and ill the early days-was a prominent sehoo1 teacher. He is a farmer by occupation, although of late years his physical condition was such that ho is unable lo do any hard work, lie is well known for his many acts of kindness, and though a poor man he (ins l>cen liberal to those in his circumstances and many a man he befriended with assistance in various ways. He enlisted in the late war idly 43,18ti2, in the 25th Ind, Vol„ mid was mustered out July 2T, 1S03, During all that time he was a faithful soldier and never came home on a.furlough until the war was over. He served as justice of the peace of Lockhart township for eight years, and is at the present time vice-pres-ident .of the Stendal Home insurance com.pouv. He is one of the solid citizens of Lockhart tewhship and Pike county. A. sound business mau of good qualifications, and will make Pike county a splendid commissioner.

Mr. Sullivan is the hero of two wars, having enlisted in the Mexican war at a Very tender age. He served in all in the last war, about lour years. It will be seen that, he was ever ready to defend the Nation's cause at any event.
