It is intimated that such an investigation will show the worst character of extravagance, besides allowances

I wish to return my sincere and heartfelt thanks to the Court lor the able, Tair aud impartial manner he has presided jn this case, and believe that every ruliiy? has been made in a spirit of fairness and justice dictated by the conscience of an honest man. To the Jury who sat for three long tveeks through that long, tedious and wearisome trial, I want to say tbftfcl believe that they only did what their odisfences dictated was right. To my attorneys I want to return my thanks lor the noble tight they made for me having as they did to meet a horde of paid witnesses backed up by all the money in the Treasury of Daviess County. To the attorneys for tne state prosecuting me, 1 have no feeling, knowing as 1 do that they undertook to represent their side of the case the same as my Attorneys did for me, hut there is one attorney, named John C. Billheimer representing the Slate who to make capital for himself in order to loot and rape the treasury if Daviess County, has seen St to bring shoot this (uot proseoution but persecution. There was not a single witness on that witness stand who swore to a material fact nut who was paid to swear by Billheimer and paid out of the County Treasury of Daviess Count}’. 1 am fully able to prove that alter trying each and every witness lor the Btate including himself and Charles (J. Sefrit that be has in his pocket to-day, five Thousand Dollars of the money of the tax payers of Davies County. There was not a single witness who testified ou behalf >f the slate who had not received favors from me, who had not been loaned money by me, Mr. Charles G. Sefrit who took such pride in writing sensational articles to til the leading newspapers in the country making it impossible for me to have gotteu » fair trial in any court in Indian a, was i>aid for what be swore. I have been his friend thinking that. of me instincts of a gentleman to bo mine, I have on dWere ocb£&n& loaned him rnouey when he was in need and I might add pnranthelielly that it is still loaned amt never wiit bo paid back. At the time of my arrest 1 was the owner of possi bly Fifteen Thousand Dollars worth of real estate in Daviess County, there were some mortgages on it; Talk to me about motive, accuse mo of motive. The very time I was arrested or shortly after, this very same John C. Billheimer, not content with tearing me away from my luvalid wife and sweet little child, goes and buys the mortagea ou my property thinking that at any loss to the Couuty he will get me out ot the way and steal from my wife and chiid, their very means of subsistence* In a certain room iu Washington according to previous arrangement on bis part I met one James McCullough o brother of Mr. Ledgerwoods wifi), 1 took the precaution to have two reputable men on ibeoutsidejof the wipdow where we sat on the inside as wituefces to our.conversation,I asked him what he wanted with uie, he said Mrs. ledgerwood, had just received a letter from her husband which he showed me saying that ifcl would give bis wife one Thousand Doll are he would come back and swear the truth and relieve me and the baiauce of thoVSnvolved trom all further trouble and also asking her (his wife) aud McCullough to swear the truth in ease I gave her the desired sum. I told bifti that X had always keen a gentleman that 1 hud never
stooped to disreputable methods m anything and thnt now I would rather go to the penitentiary than pay any one a cent to swear. As soon as he lett me he hunted up Billheimer and the next day or evening, John C. Billheimer, Charles G. SefHt, and Andrew Lillie jumped tho train and went to Jeffersonville to see Led gel-wood (all at the expense of tax payers or Daviess Co.,) and there told Ledgurwoad if he would eome hack and twear against me he should be pardoned at once as they held a ciueh on the Governor, that he could not refuse, and the inference of any sensible man would bo that as he wanted one Thousand dollars to swear and ns Billheimer kuowing as he did. avho hired the Court House set fire to, and Iknowiug it was one ofhiir friends and Coi conspirators aud holding the purse without any strings tied to it of the Treasury of Daviess County, I say it is hut reasonable that iu'addition to his promise ofpairdou he received at least the coveted amount. Billheimer kuows who it was that tired this dasta idly piece of work done. 1 make the eh»ure here iu open court that he aud Charles G. Scfrit, kuew months before it was done that it would he done and was done with their knowledge, approbation aud consent. I am a believer in God. 1 believe him to he a just God who presides over the destinies of nations as well as people and as God is inv judge I am here awaiting a sentence fora crime of which I am as innocent as his Honor on the Bench. I am the victim or the most damnable, conspiracy ever concocted within the limits oi the stale of Indiana. Parties believing that I hud been a thorn in the side of some politicians of our county, parties wanting to steal from me the living of my wife and child Parties wanting to loot the Treasury of the County knowing I would not staad idly by and see it doue are my persecutors. Haw admirably they have succeeded in rapeing the Treasury of our County, aud how admirably Billheimer, Sefrit and Lillie have succeeded by subordination or witnesses, pliant tools in their hands, every one wbt sees me standing here awaiting the sentence of this court must appreciate. I make the assertion that there is not a single person in Pike County to-day who believes me guilty. Spectators, intelligent men wht heard every wo«Lof evidence, told me nftei my trial and before the jury rendered a ver diet that t would bo acquired iu less that one hour. There is not a man in lMfciess County believes ms guilty unless it shout# t« Sefrit and Uiilheimer and they pretend to believe it In order to screen their owr dirty, crooked and thieving connections with tills deplorable affair. As I have lie fore remarked that dirty and sensations shetAitalled the Washington Gazette ha( through'its drunken and debauebtd editoi made it impossible for me to get a fair aui impartial trial in any county in th Ho has called witnesses for liars, bo has assailed the dignity tegrity of this court anti Us when called up helore your like a whipped cur. could believe that it I bad wanted tbe court house burned these very books would have been placed where the fire would have reached them first. If I were guilty of this crime, I was guil ty to the exteut of the -law, if I were in full possession of my mental faculties. But if I committed the crime as sworn to by suljorued,(perjured and paid witnesses I should be sent to the in. sane asylum and not to the Penitentiary. I do truly hope that Billheimcr and 8efrit. when sentence is pronounced upon me by this honorable court, will be supremely happy that when they snow that they have stolen my liberty, that they nave torn away an innoeent man (as they both Know) from I his invalid wife and little child the only | things bn earth d earer to him than liberty or life. I say again that 1 hope if there is any consolation gained thereby to them, that they will be consoled and regale their associates in the poker rooms, Crap joints and other places of amuscuients( t) to which they resort every evening with thrilling stories of hovf they bought and seemed the coijvielion of poor Jim La relic to save their owu dirty carcasses.
