The Harvest Moon. The phciiomenoii commonly known as (ho “harvest iiioou” was a prominent feature of September’s celestial exhibition. At the time of the full tnoou which occurs nearest the au. tumnal equinox, the moon is observed to rise but a little later each evening, so that the number of consecutive moonlight evenings is greater than at other seasons of the year. The reason of this is that when the moon is full in the autumn, it is always moviug northward, and is iu that part of its orbit which inclines least to the boriaon, and when it is full in that part of its orbit, rises less tkau half au hour each evening, whereas the dally retardation is about fifty-two miuutes. In the spriug, when the moon is moving southward at its full phase, aud its orbit inclines most to the horiaon, it rises about an hour and a quarter later each even ini', and the uumber of consecutive moonlight uights is less than the average. It will be roadily understood that the nearerthe moon’s orbit is to being parallel to the ItoriEon, the less is its descent in moving a giveu distance, and the less the interval between its risings on successive days. So, conversely, the nearer its orbit is to beiug perpendicular to the korixou, the greater is the deceul iu moving a given distance, so that uuder such circumstances the iuterval between the successive rising of the moon would be greater than usual,—Pittubarjf Ditpatch.
